Check your PS5’s installed version at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony’s Up to date label under the version means the console has the latest system software. To check for an update that has not yet been installed, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
Check the installed system software version
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > Console Information.
- Read the system software version. If Up to date appears under it, Sony indicates that the latest version is installed. See PlayStation Support’s system software instructions.
This on-console status is more useful than relying on a version number in an older online guide, since the latest release can change.
Check for an update to install
- Return to Settings > System > System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- If the console shows Update Available, select Update System Software and follow the prompts. Sony’s official update page has the current instructions.
A PS5 connected to the internet may notify you when new system software is available. A game disc that requires a later version may also prompt an update. You can enable automatic updates in the system software update settings, but the manual check above gives you an immediate status.
If the update will not install normally
Try the console’s online update first when available. If that does not work, Sony documents updating through Safe Mode and a USB drive. For the USB route, Sony requires a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, a PC or Mac with internet access, and the official PS5 update file placed in Sony’s specified folder structure with the required filename. Follow the current PlayStation Support Safe Mode and USB instructions exactly; the USB method is not needed for a routine version check or ordinary online update.

- Use only Sony’s official update file and instructions.
- Do not turn off the console or interrupt the installation while it is running.
- Do not confuse an update with reinstalling system software. Sony says reinstalling deletes all data on the console, so it is a separate, destructive recovery step—not a first step for checking whether the PS5 can update.
The instructions cover PS5 consoles generally, but they do not guarantee a successful update on a modified, damaged, or malfunctioning console. Sony’s live support page is also the best place to check current release details; the exact version and rollout timing can change.
