Adobe Genuine Service (AGS), sometimes described as Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service, can be removed with Adobe’s own uninstall tools. On Windows, remove it from Control Panel. On macOS, run AdobeCleanUpUtility.app from the Adobe Genuine Service utilities folder. If you uninstall every Adobe application first, Adobe says AGS automatically uninstalls itself.
Adobe recommends leaving AGS installed while Adobe software remains on the computer. Removing the service does not make an unlicensed Adobe installation legitimate, and Adobe warns that it may use other anti-fraud methods even after AGS is manually removed.

What Adobe Genuine Service does
Adobe describes AGS as “a service that periodically verifies whether Adobe apps on your machine are genuine and notifies you if they are not.” It runs in the background and may appear in Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdobe uses “genuine” to mean software legally licensed and purchased directly from Adobe or an authorized reseller. A notification therefore indicates that AGS found an Adobe application or installation it considers non-genuine. Adobe says ignoring the notice may eventually result in the identified applications being disabled.

AGS is separate from the main Adobe applications. Removing AGS is a service cleanup; it is not the same action as uninstalling Photoshop, Acrobat, Premiere Pro, or another Adobe application. The official removal tools delete AGS and its related data, while the Adobe applications can remain installed.
Choose the removal method that matches your situation
| Situation | Official method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe applications remain installed on Windows | Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Adobe Genuine Service > Uninstall | Removes AGS and its support files |
| Adobe applications remain installed on macOS | Applications > Utilities > Adobe Genuine Service > AdobeCleanUpUtility.app | Removes AGS and cached data |
| Every Adobe application has been uninstalled | No separate cleanup is normally required | Adobe says AGS automatically uninstalls itself after all Adobe apps are removed |
| You are replacing an unlicensed installation | Use the supported licensing path: choose a plan, uninstall unlicensed apps, then install genuine Adobe apps | Removes the unlicensed software and replaces it with a licensed installation |
Use the operating-system procedure below if you want to remove only AGS. Use the complete uninstall route if you no longer need Adobe software on the computer.
Before removing AGS
Confirm which outcome you actually want. If you still use a legally licensed Adobe installation, Adobe’s recommendation is to keep AGS installed. It is the component that checks the installation and presents authenticity notices. Removing it is most appropriate when you are cleaning up Adobe software you no longer use or following a complete transition to another application.
- Identify whether the computer runs Windows or macOS; the procedures are different.
- Save open work and close Adobe applications before starting the uninstall.
- Decide whether you are removing only AGS or every Adobe application.
- If the installation is unlicensed, plan to uninstall those applications rather than treating AGS removal as a licensing fix.
- Use the built-in Adobe uninstaller or the operating system’s uninstall entry. Do not start by deleting service files, editing the hosts file, blocking network addresses, or applying a cracked-app patch.
How to uninstall Adobe Genuine Service on Windows
The Windows procedure uses the standard Control Panel entry documented by Adobe. It removes Adobe Genuine Service and its support files without requiring you to remove every Adobe application first.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find Adobe Genuine Service in the installed-program list.
- Right-click Adobe Genuine Service and choose Uninstall.
- Read the confirmation message and select Uninstall again.
What this Windows procedure removes
Adobe says the Windows uninstaller removes the Adobe Genuine Service and its support files. It does not describe this action as an uninstall of the other Adobe applications shown separately in Programs and Features. If you want those applications gone as well, uninstall each one through its own official entry or use Adobe’s normal application-removal process.
If Adobe Genuine Service is not listed
Do not compensate by deleting random Adobe folders or disabling unrelated Windows services. First check whether all Adobe applications have already been removed; Adobe says AGS automatically uninstalls after the last Adobe application is uninstalled. If Adobe software is still present and the entry is missing, use Adobe’s supported application installers and uninstallers or contact the administrator responsible for a managed computer rather than removing files manually.
How to uninstall Adobe Genuine Service on macOS
On macOS, Adobe supplies a dedicated cleanup utility. The utility removes AGS and its cached data.
- Open the Applications folder.
- Open Utilities, then open the Adobe Genuine Service folder.
- Run AdobeCleanUpUtility.app.
- Double-click the uninstaller if prompted.
- Select Uninstall.
- Enter the macOS user name and password when requested, then select OK.
What the macOS utility removes
Adobe states that this process removes Adobe Genuine Service and cached data. It is not a general uninstall of the Adobe applications in your Applications folder. Remove those applications separately if your goal is a complete Adobe cleanup.
If you cannot find the utility
Check the exact path under Applications > Utilities > Adobe Genuine Service. If the folder is absent, review whether all Adobe applications have already been uninstalled; AGS may have completed its automatic cleanup. Avoid deleting individual files from Library folders or changing launch and network settings as a substitute for the documented utility.
Automatic removal after uninstalling every Adobe app
Adobe says AGS has an automatic uninstall feature. After all Adobe applications have been uninstalled, AGS automatically uninstalls itself. This is the cleanest route when you no longer need any Adobe software.
The sequence is important: removing one application while another Adobe application remains does not meet Adobe’s stated condition for automatic AGS removal. If AGS is still visible after removing one app, check for other Adobe applications before attempting manual cleanup.

Can you remove AGS without uninstalling Adobe applications?
Yes. Adobe documents a separate AGS uninstall path for both operating systems, so the service can be removed while Adobe applications remain installed. On Windows this is the Adobe Genuine Service entry in Control Panel; on macOS it is AdobeCleanUpUtility.app.

However, Adobe recommends keeping AGS installed if Adobe software remains on the computer. The service is the component that verifies authenticity and issues notices. Removing it therefore changes the verification component, not the licensing status of the applications. Adobe also warns that it may use other anti-fraud methods even if AGS is manually uninstalled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the Adobe notification keeps appearing
A recurring notice means AGS has identified an Adobe application or installation it does not consider genuine. Adobe says non-genuine software may have been modified and can increase exposure to malware or viruses. It also says modified or unlicensed software has a greater chance of malfunctioning or failing.
Adobe’s help material cites an IDC estimate from 2018. In the cited Software Management: Security Imperative, Business Opportunity, BSA Global Software Survey, organizations that obtain or install an unlicensed software package, or buy a computer with unlicensed software, face a one-in-three chance—reported there as 29 percent—of encountering malware. That figure is an IDC estimate attributed by Adobe to the 2018 survey; it is not a measurement of your particular computer or installation.

Adobe states that it may disable the identified non-genuine applications if notices are ignored.
What to do if the Adobe installation is unlicensed
For an unlicensed installation, Adobe’s supported resolution has three parts:
- Select an official Adobe plan. Choose the Adobe plan or Creative Cloud subscription that covers the applications you need.
- Uninstall the unlicensed applications. Remove the non-genuine copies rather than trying to preserve them by disabling AGS.
- Install genuine Adobe applications. Download and install the licensed apps from Adobe or obtain them through an authorized reseller.
This route addresses both the software and the licensing problem. Merely uninstalling AGS does not convert an unlicensed application into a licensed one.
What not to do
Adobe’s documented procedures are the Control Panel uninstaller, the macOS cleanup utility, and automatic cleanup after all Adobe applications are removed. They do not include unofficial service-blocking techniques.
- Do not edit the Windows hosts file to block Adobe servers.
- Do not delete AGS files by hand as a substitute for the official uninstallers.
- Do not install cracked-app patches or modified executables.
- Do not disable unrelated security, update, or licensing services merely because they appear alongside AGS.
- Do not assume that suppressing a notification makes an application genuine or supported.
These workarounds can leave partial files behind, interfere with legitimate installations, or expose the computer to modified software. Adobe also says other anti-fraud methods may still be used after AGS is manually removed.
Verify what changed after removal
Use the same place where you found AGS to confirm the intended scope of the cleanup:
- Windows: reopen Control Panel’s Programs and Features list and check whether Adobe Genuine Service is still present.
- macOS: check the Adobe Genuine Service utility location and Activity Monitor. The service should no longer be running after the official utility completes.
- Adobe applications: open the applications you intentionally kept and confirm that they are still installed. AGS removal is not an instruction to remove those applications.
- Complete cleanup: if your intention was to remove Adobe entirely, verify that no Adobe applications remain and allow the automatic AGS cleanup to occur.
If the service remains listed, repeat the documented procedure carefully and check that you used an account with permission to uninstall software. On macOS, provide the requested user name and password. On a managed Windows or Mac computer, an organization’s administrator may control installation and removal.
Which option should you use?
- Keep Adobe apps and use a genuine license: leave AGS installed, as Adobe recommends.
- Keep Adobe apps but remove only the service: use the Windows Control Panel entry or the macOS AdobeCleanUpUtility.
- Remove all Adobe software: uninstall every Adobe application and let AGS automatically uninstall after the last one is gone.
- Replace an unlicensed installation: select an official plan, uninstall the unlicensed apps, and install genuine Adobe apps.
The correct method depends on operating system, whether Adobe applications remain, and whether the installation is licensed. AGS removal alone is a service cleanup, not a substitute for a genuine Adobe installation.
