To remove vanilla static contaminated areas, edit the active mission folder’s cfgEffectArea.json, remove the unwanted objects from its Areas array, or replace the file contents with the documented empty JSON object {} to disable every static effect area. Save valid JSON and restart the server so the mission configuration is loaded again. This change does not require a character or map wipe.

If gas zones still appear after that restart, they are probably dynamic Central Economy events rather than entries in cfgEffectArea.json. Dynamic spawns must be disabled in the mission’s event configuration, usually in events.xml or the corresponding event definition, and may also be created or altered by a mod.

First determine which kind of contaminated area you are removing

DayZ uses two separate systems that can look identical in game but are controlled by different files. Editing the wrong one produces the common result of “I removed the zones, but gas still spawns.” Identify the system before changing anything.

Static effect areas

Static areas are defined in the mission folder’s cfgEffectArea.json. They are created when the mission starts from the objects in that file’s Areas array. Vanilla static areas are not persistent entities stored in the character or world database, so removing their definitions and restarting the server is sufficient; a wipe is not part of this procedure.

  • Survive against environmental dangers, including the infected, dynamic weather, and animal predators.

Dynamic contaminated-area events

Dynamic zones are spawned by the Central Economy event system. Their event definitions are separate from the static JSON list. A clean cfgEffectArea.json therefore does not prevent a dynamic event from creating a gas zone. The relevant event must be disabled or adjusted in the mission’s event configuration, such as events.xml or the event-definition file used by that mission.

Zone type Primary configuration How it is created Restart to load a change Wipe required for the vanilla configuration change Mod caveat
Static effect area cfgEffectArea.json, including its Areas array Loaded at mission start Yes No Custom scripts or modded EffectArea classes can change behavior
Dynamic contaminated area Central Economy event configuration, commonly events.xml or an event definition Spawned by an economy event Yes, after the event configuration is changed A configuration edit does not call for a character or map wipe Mods may add, rename or recreate the event

Prepare before editing the mission

Server hosts arrange files differently, but the configuration belongs to the mission currently launched by the server. A server can contain several missions or map profiles, so editing an inactive copy has no effect.

  • Identify the active mission folder for the map and profile you actually run, such as the Chernarus or Livonia mission.
  • Confirm that you have a file-manager, FTP, or equivalent access method that can read and write the mission files.
  • Stop the server before editing if your host recommends offline changes. At minimum, do not save while the server manager is synchronizing the same file.
  • Download or copy the original cfgEffectArea.json and any event file you may change. Keep the backup outside the live mission folder and label it with the date and map.
  • Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. JSON and XML are plain-text formats.

If the host does not expose the mission folder, you cannot reliably apply this change from the in-game administration panel alone. Ask support for mission-file access or move to a DayZ server service that provides a file manager; do not guess at a different directory.

Remove static contaminated areas from cfgEffectArea.json

1. Open the mission file that the server actually uses

Navigate to the active mission folder and open cfgEffectArea.json. Do not edit a similarly named file in an archive, a disabled profile, or a different map’s mission directory. If you run multiple instances, check each instance’s launch configuration and apply the change only where you want static areas removed.

2. Choose between selective removal and a complete disable

For a selective change, remove only the unwanted zone objects from the Areas array and leave the other objects intact. Preserve the surrounding JSON structure and make sure the comma placement remains valid: the last remaining object must not have a trailing comma, and two adjacent objects must be separated by one comma.

To turn off every static effect area, Bohemia Interactive’s documentation specifies an empty JSON object. Replace the file contents with exactly:

{}

Here, “empty” means an opening and closing brace, not a zero-byte file. The file must still be valid JSON. Do not add comments, explanatory text, or a comment marker above the braces; standard JSON does not allow comments.

3. Save without changing the schema

Use the schema supplied with the server build you are running. Do not copy a configuration from a different DayZ version merely because the file names match. Keep the original character encoding and plain-text format when possible, and check that the editor did not append an extra extension such as .txt.

4. Validate the result

Before uploading, inspect the file for unmatched braces, brackets or quotation marks. A selective edit should still contain a valid Areas array; the all-static disable method should contain only {}. If your host offers a JSON validator, use it before restarting. A parse error can prevent the mission from loading correctly, so restore the backup immediately if the server reports a configuration error.

5. Upload and restart the server

Upload the edited file to the same mission folder and restart the DayZ server. A restart is required because vanilla static areas are created at mission start; changing the text file while the process is running does not retroactively remove already-created definitions from that process.

6. Check the restart log and test safely

Read the server RPT or equivalent log after startup. Look for JSON or mission-initialization errors before inviting players back. Then connect from a safe location and approach a site where a static zone previously existed. Do not treat a running server as proof that the intended file was read: the log, the active mission path and an in-game check together establish whether the change took effect.

Remove only selected static zones

Selective removal is appropriate when you want to keep some contaminated areas for gameplay. The objects in the Areas array represent the configured static zones. Because no universal object layout for every DayZ build is published, do not rename keys or invent coordinates while editing. Delete the complete object for the unwanted area, including its opening and closing braces, and leave every other object unchanged.

  • Make one backup before the first deletion.
  • Remove one complete object at a time rather than deleting individual lines that may belong to a neighboring object.
  • Check commas after each deletion.
  • Restart and verify the specific location before removing additional areas.

If you cannot confidently distinguish one object from another, use the original file’s formatting and indentation as your guide or ask the host for a copy of the mission schema. Replacing the file with {} is safer than submitting malformed JSON, but it disables all static areas rather than just one.

Why a wipe is not needed for static removal

Static effect areas are generated from the mission configuration at startup; they are not persistent character or map entities that must be deleted from a database. Restarting after the edit causes the server to build the static-area set from the new file. Player inventories, characters and the ordinary map database are not erased by this configuration change.

A wipe may still be requested by an unrelated mod, a host migration or another administrative operation. That is a separate decision. Do not wipe a server merely because cfgEffectArea.json was changed.

If gas zones still spawn, inspect Central Economy events

1. Confirm that the static edit loaded

Check the restart log and revisit a location that was configured statically. If the known static sites are gone but a new gas cloud appears elsewhere or at a later time, the remaining source is likely dynamic rather than a failed JSON edit.

2. Locate the mission’s event configuration

Open the active mission’s Central Economy configuration and inspect events.xml or the event-definition files used by that build. Find the contaminated-area event. Event names and file organization can vary by server version and by mod, so match the definition used by your installation instead of copying a name from an unrelated server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Disable the contaminated-area event deliberately

Use the event configuration’s supported disable mechanism, preserving valid XML and the surrounding economy definitions. Keep a backup of the original file. Removing the wrong event can affect unrelated spawns, and a malformed XML file can stop the economy from loading.

4. Restart and observe the event lifecycle

Restart after saving the event change. Dynamic zones are controlled by the economy process, so changing only cfgEffectArea.json cannot suppress them. If a zone still appears after the restart, check for a second event definition or a mod that registers its own contaminated-area event.

The DayZ Wiki reports that a dynamic contaminated zone on official servers lasts about 35 minutes, but that is version-sensitive gameplay behavior, not a universal server-configuration guarantee. Do not use that duration as evidence that your event edit succeeded or failed; use the active event definition and the server log.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server starts, but the old static zones remain

  • Verify that you edited the mission folder named in the server’s launch configuration.
  • Check that the upload replaced the live file rather than creating a second file with a hidden extension.
  • Confirm that the file contains valid JSON and that the server was fully restarted, not merely disconnected and reconnected.
  • Check whether a mod or custom script recreates effect areas after mission start.

Gas appears even though cfgEffectArea.json is {}

This is the expected diagnostic pattern for a dynamic source. Inspect Central Economy event definitions and enabled mods. An empty static-area file does not disable event-spawned zones.

The server reports a configuration or parse error

Restore the backup, restart to confirm the original file loads, then repeat the edit with a plain-text editor. For JSON, remove comments and trailing commas. For XML, restore the original element nesting and closing tags. Read the RPT around the first reported line; later errors can be side effects of the initial syntax error.

The host’s control panel has no mission-file editor

Request file-manager or FTP access from the host. If the provider keeps mission files inaccessible, support staff must apply the change, or you need a service that exposes those files. Do not assume a panel setting with a similar name edits the live mission.

A modded server behaves differently from vanilla

Custom scripts and modded EffectArea classes can override or supplement the vanilla configuration. Temporarily review the mod’s documentation and startup parameters, and compare a controlled restart with the mod enabled and disabled only if your maintenance plan permits it. Keep the vanilla file backup so you can distinguish a syntax problem from a mod-created zone.

Version and schema cautions

Bohemia Interactive’s official documentation records a static-zone configuration change in DayZ 1.28 and includes the function signature FillWithParticles(vector pos, float areaRadius, float outwardsBleed, float partSize, int partId). That reference is useful when matching a 1.28 installation, but it is not a guarantee that every older or modded server uses the same schema. Use the format shipped with the installed server build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older formats may be backward-compatible, yet compatibility should be verified from the server’s own files and logs. A mod that supplies its own effect-area class can change how fields are interpreted or when areas are created. If a version update changes the schema, migrate the file carefully instead of carrying an obsolete object layout forward unchanged.

Operational checklist

  1. Identify the active Chernarus, Livonia or other mission folder.
  2. Back up cfgEffectArea.json and, if needed, the event configuration.
  3. For static zones, remove selected objects from Areas or replace the file with valid {} to disable all static areas.
  4. Save plain, comment-free JSON and validate its syntax.
  5. Restart the server and inspect the RPT or startup log.
  6. Test a former static location from a safe position.
  7. If gas still appears, inspect Central Economy contaminated-area events and enabled mods.
  8. Restart again after an event-file change and document the final configuration for the next administrator.

The practical rule is simple: cfgEffectArea.json controls static contaminated areas, while Central Economy event definitions control dynamic spawns. Treat them as separate systems, restart after each configuration change, and keep a recoverable backup before editing.
