If that uninstall fails, use Norton’s official Norton 360 Remover and select Remove, not the reinstall option. On Mac, the procedure depends on whether you use macOS Catalina or later, or Mojave and earlier. Removing the application does not cancel your Norton subscription or automatic renewal.
What happens when you remove Norton?
Uninstalling Norton removes the installed Norton application from the computer. It does not, by itself, cancel the subscription associated with your Norton account. If you are trying to stop future billing, you must complete Norton’s separate subscription-cancellation process after removing the software.

The Windows removal utility also offers two different outcomes. One option removes the current Norton application and automatically reinstalls the latest version. The other removes the existing application only. Choose the removal-only path when your goal is to uninstall Norton permanently.

Norton’s remover does not uninstall Norton Private Browser. That browser is a separate component and needs its own removal procedure.

Remove Norton normally on Windows
Use the standard Windows uninstall entry first. This is the supported first step for a normal installation and works on supported Windows editions where Norton 360 appears in the installed-program list.
- Close Norton. Exit the Norton window and close any Norton interface that is open.
- Open the installed-program list. Press
Windows + Rto open the Run dialog. - Launch Programs and Features. Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Norton. In the list, select Norton 360. Depending on the Windows build and Norton release, the command may be labeled Remove or Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal. Follow the prompts, confirm that you want to uninstall, and click Next through the wizard.
- Restart Windows. Restart when the wizard finishes, even if Windows does not immediately force a restart.
If Norton 360 is not listed, check that you are using the Windows account and installation where Norton is actually installed. Do not remove unrelated entries simply because their names contain “Norton”; the entry you want is the installed Norton security product.
Use Norton 360 Remover when the normal uninstall fails
If the regular wizard displays an error, hangs, or leaves Norton installed after a restart, use Norton’s official Norton 360 Remover. It is intended for situations where the ordinary Windows uninstall cannot complete.

Choose removal only
- Download and open Norton’s
Norton_360_removerutility from Norton Support. - When the utility presents its choices, select Remove. Do not select the option that removes Norton and automatically reinstalls the latest version.
- Confirm the prompt labeled Uninstall.
- When prompted, click Restart Now.
The restart is part of the removal process. Allow Windows to restart before checking whether Norton has been removed or installing another security application.
If the remover is slow or stops responding
Norton advises exiting other running programs and restarting the computer before trying the remover’s removal-only flow again. A clean restart can release files that were still in use by the failed uninstall attempt.
If Norton Family is installed, uninstall Norton Family before running Norton 360 Remover. Leaving that component in place can interfere with the remover’s attempt to clean up the main Norton installation.

If the remover reports an error
The utility includes a Reboot option that enters Windows Safe Mode. Use that option when the normal remover reports an error, then run the removal process from Safe Mode as directed by the utility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Safe Mode loads a reduced Windows environment, so some programs and drivers that normally hold Norton files open are not started. Do not interrupt the reboot sequence. After the removal completes, restart Windows normally and verify that the Norton application is gone.
Remove Norton from a Mac
Mac instructions differ by macOS version. Norton’s manual also requires an administrator account user name and password, and the Mac must be restarted after uninstalling.

- Close Norton if it is open.
- Open Finder and select Applications in the sidebar.
- Drag the Norton application to the Trash or Bin.
- When Norton displays its confirmation window, click Continue.
- Enter the administrator account user name and password when requested.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the Mac when Norton prompts you to do so.
Dragging the application to the Trash is only the beginning of this process. Complete the authentication and choose Uninstall; otherwise the Norton removal routine may not run.
macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier
- Click the Norton icon in the Mac menu bar.
- Open Norton, then choose Norton > Uninstall Norton.
- Click Uninstall.
- Authenticate with the administrator account when prompted.
- Restart the Mac after the uninstall process finishes.
If you do not know an administrator password, you cannot complete Norton’s documented Mac uninstall process. Ask the Mac’s administrator to perform the removal rather than repeatedly retrying with a standard account.

What to check after uninstalling
- Restart completed: The computer should have completed the restart requested by the uninstall wizard or Norton utility.
- Norton is no longer installed: On Windows, check the installed-program list again. On Mac, check the Applications folder after the restart.
- Norton Private Browser: If it remains, remember that Norton 360 Remover does not remove it. Follow the browser’s separate uninstall instructions.
- Subscription status: Removing the application does not cancel billing or automatic renewal. Use Norton’s separate account cancellation process if you no longer want the subscription.
Troubleshooting common uninstall problems
“Norton won’t uninstall” on Windows
Start again with a restart and close other running programs. Then use Norton 360 Remover, selecting Remove rather than the reinstall choice. If the utility reports an error, use its Reboot option to enter Safe Mode and repeat the removal there.

The remover reinstalls Norton
This happens when the reinstall option is selected. Run Norton 360 Remover again and choose Remove, confirm Uninstall, and select Restart Now when prompted.
Norton Family is still installed
Remove Norton Family before running Norton 360 Remover. It is a separate Norton component and should be handled first when the remover is having difficulty completing.
The Mac uninstall asks for credentials
Norton requires the administrator account user name and password on Mac. A standard user cannot substitute their own non-administrator credentials. Have the administrator authenticate the uninstall, then restart the Mac.
The subscription is still active
That is expected after an application uninstall. The software removal and the subscription are separate actions. Complete Norton’s subscription-cancellation process if you want to stop renewal.
As an optional shortcut for Windows cleanup and common software problems, Outbyte PC Repair can attempt fixes for more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows vulnerabilities, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Does uninstalling Norton cancel the subscription?
No. Norton states that uninstalling the application does not automatically cancel the subscription. If you want to stop future renewal, use Norton’s separate subscription-cancellation process in addition to the Windows or Mac uninstall steps.
