Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not launch the unknown software or enter your sign-in details into it. First determine whether it is a game or app installed on the console, or an authorized third-party service connected to your PlayStation account. Delete a local installation through the PS5 storage menu. Remove an account connection through Authorized Apps. If deletion fails, update the console and use Safe Mode to rebuild the database. A factory reset is a final step because it erases data stored on the console.
This procedure removes software without using jailbreak utilities, unofficial cleaners, or tools that claim to unlock games. Those tools can expose your account and conflict with Sony’s software-use rules.

Identify what appeared on the PS5
The correct removal method depends on where the item exists. A tile in the Games home screen is usually a locally installed game or application. An unfamiliar service that appears in account settings is an authorization, not a game installation. These are separate problems and deleting one does not automatically remove the other.
Locally installed game or app
A local item occupies space on the PS5’s internal storage or an attached USB extended-storage drive. You can remove it from the console’s storage management screen. Deleting the installation does not by itself prove that an account was compromised; it only removes the files currently stored on the console.

Account-linked service
Some legitimate services receive permission to connect to a PlayStation account. If a service is unfamiliar, revoke that permission under Authorized Apps. Unlinking an authorization does not necessarily delete a game already installed on the console, so check both locations when the item has a game tile and an account connection.
When the item is not actually installed
A library entry, advertisement, shared-console profile, or game that is available to download is not the same as an installed program. Do not download an unfamiliar title merely to investigate it. Check the storage list first, then review account activity if the entry is associated with purchases or changed account details.
Pause activity before removing anything
Take these precautions before opening the suspicious title or following its prompts:
Recommended Free Tools
- Do not launch software you do not recognize.
- Do not type a PlayStation Network password, passkey, payment information, or two-factor authentication code into a prompt supplied by the unknown item.
- Do not install an unofficial unlocker, jailbreak package, piracy tool, or “cleaner.” Sony’s Software Usage Terms state: "You must not use any means to bypass or disable any encryption, security, or authentication mechanism for the Authorised Systems or any Software."
- If the console is behaving normally, keep it on the standard system software and use only Sony’s built-in settings for removal and recovery.
- If you see an unfamiliar payment, email change, password reset, or other account change, treat the event as a possible account-security incident rather than only a storage problem.
Delete a locally installed game-store app or game
Use the supported storage menu rather than deleting random folders or relying on a third-party utility.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage > Games and Apps.
- Choose the storage location that contains the item, if the console asks you to select one.
- Select the unfamiliar game or application, confirm that it is the item you intend to remove, and choose Delete.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then return to the home screen and confirm that the tile is no longer installed. Do not interrupt the console while it is processing the deletion.
Deleting an installed item removes its local files. It does not erase your entire console, and it does not revoke an account authorization. If the title was legitimate but damaged, you can download it again from the official Game Library or reinstall it from a legitimate disc after the console is stable.
Update the PS5 after deletion
System software updates can resolve problems that prevent an item from deleting or that cause repeated errors. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and install any available update. For an individual game or application, highlight its tile, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. Only accept updates offered through the console’s normal PlayStation interface.
What to do when deletion fails
A failed deletion, a frozen storage screen, or continuing game errors is a reason to use Sony’s supported recovery sequence—not a reason to download an unofficial repair tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRebuild the database in Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep; this starts Safe Mode.
- Connect a DualSense controller with a USB cable if Safe Mode requests a wired controller connection, then press the controller’s PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.
- Allow the process to complete before turning the console off or disconnecting power.
Database rebuilding is a supported filesystem and database-repair step. It is intended to correct indexing and related system errors; it is not a jailbreak-removal tool and it does not authorize software. The console may take time to scan its storage, so an apparently slow process is not a reason to interrupt it.
Use the update path if the console cannot update normally
Sony also documents a USB-based system-software recovery procedure for consoles that cannot update through the normal menus. It requires a DualSense controller, a USB cable, and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT containing the correctly prepared system-software update file. Follow Sony’s current on-screen and support instructions for the file name and folder layout; do not use an update package from an unofficial source.

A PS5 USB cable is therefore relevant to Safe Mode or USB recovery when a wired controller connection is required. It is not necessary for ordinary deletion from Settings > Storage > Games and Apps.
Reinstall a legitimate game safely
If the suspicious item was actually a legitimate game whose installation became corrupted, remove the damaged installation and obtain the game again from a trusted ownership source.
Digital ownership
- Open the official Game Library on the account that owns the game.
- Locate the title in the purchased or owned collection and choose the download option supplied by the console.
- If the title is shown as unavailable despite ownership, check the account that purchased it and use the console’s license-restoration function when appropriate.
Disc ownership
- Insert the legitimate game disc into the PS5.
- Allow the console to copy or install the game through the standard interface.
- Keep the disc available when the game requires it for licensing; do not replace the disc install with an unofficial package.
If a title was obtained from a source that cannot provide a valid PlayStation license, do not attempt to make it work with an unlocker. Remove it and use the official Game Library or a legitimate disc instead.
Unlink an unfamiliar authorized app
When the suspicious item is a third-party account service, remove the permission separately from any local game files.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps.
- Review the list for services you do not recognize or no longer use.
- Select the service, choose Unlink, and confirm with Yes, Unlink.
- Repeat for each unfamiliar authorization, then return to the account-security checks below.
Unlinking stops the listed authorization from remaining connected through that menu. It does not tell you whether a payment was made, whether the account password was changed, or whether a separate console user downloaded software. Those questions require an account review.
Check and secure the PlayStation account
An unknown game-store prompt can be harmless software confusion, but unfamiliar payments or changed account details require prompt account protection.

Review account activity
Open Account Management and inspect recent purchases, payment activity, sign-in information, and account details. Record anything you do not recognize. If you find an unknown payment, an altered email address, or another change you cannot reverse, contact PlayStation Support and follow Sony’s compromised-account recovery process.
Change the credentials
- Change the account password to a unique password that is not used on another service, or switch to a passkey where Sony offers that option.
- Enable a console login passcode so another person using the PS5 cannot simply open your profile.
- Require a password at checkout to prevent purchases made by someone using the console.
- Sign out of sessions or devices you do not recognize through the account-management controls available for your account.
Sony’s security guidance says: "Never share your account details with anyone else." Do not give a helper, seller, friend, or software prompt your password, passkey, recovery code, or verification code.

| Situation | Console reaches the home screen? | Primary action | Effect on stored data | License or account issue solved? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unknown game or app is installed | Yes | Delete it through Settings > Storage > Games and Apps | Removes the selected local installation only | No; review Authorized Apps and Account Management separately |
| Deletion or game errors persist | Usually, but Safe Mode is needed for the repair | Enter Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database | Database repair is less destructive than a full reset; follow the console’s warning screens | No; it repairs system indexing rather than granting ownership |
| Normal system update will not complete | Not necessarily | Use Sony’s supported Safe Mode or USB update procedure | Depends on the selected recovery option; read every warning | No; use Account Management for authorization or payment concerns |
| Unknown service is connected to the account | Yes | Unlink it under Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps | Does not delete local game files | Removes that listed account authorization |
| Console remains unstable after supported steps | Maybe not | Consider Reset Your Console only after backup and other recovery attempts | Erases data on console storage | No; reinstall only through official channels and secure the account separately |
Use Reset Your Console only as a last resort
A reset is not the normal way to remove one suspicious game or store app. Sony states that Reset Your Console erases data on the console’s storage. Before selecting it, back up saved data and any other files you need, where backup is possible, and make sure you know the sign-in details for the account that owns your games.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Finish the ordinary deletion, update, Safe Mode database rebuild, and account-unlinking steps that apply to your situation.
- Back up required data and note which games are owned digitally or require discs.
- Open the PS5 reset option only after reading the on-screen warning about erasing console storage.
- After the reset, install system software and games only through Sony’s official channels or legitimate discs.
- Restore your account security settings before downloading anything else.
Resetting the console does not cure a compromised account by itself. If an attacker still controls the account, the same unauthorized purchases or downloads can return after setup.
Troubleshooting common cases
The unknown title is visible in the library but not in storage
Do not delete unrelated games to make the entry disappear. A library listing can represent an available download rather than an installed program. Check Account Management for purchases and check Authorized Apps for a connected service. If you cannot identify the listing or see account changes, contact PlayStation Support.
The item returns after you delete it
Confirm that you removed the local installation from every storage location shown by the console, including any attached extended storage. Then check whether the tile is only a library entry or whether another console user has installed it. Review account credentials and payment activity if the download appears without your consent.
The PS5 shows a message asking for credentials
Cancel the prompt unless it is clearly part of the standard PlayStation interface and you initiated the action. Never enter credentials into an unknown game-store screen. Change the account password or use a passkey, enable the console login passcode, require a checkout password, and review account activity.
Safe Mode does not solve the error
Confirm that the console was fully powered off before holding the power button for the second beep. Use a working DualSense controller and USB cable when requested. If a normal update still fails, follow Sony’s USB recovery requirements with a FAT32 or exFAT drive and the official update file. Continued failures, unknown payments, or changed account details justify contacting PlayStation Support rather than trying an unofficial tool.
You deleted a legitimate game by mistake
Deletion removes the local installation, not the underlying ownership record. Reinstall the title from the owning account’s official Game Library or from a legitimate disc. If the game is not recognized as owned, verify the purchasing account and use the console’s license-restoration option where appropriate.
Final safety checklist
- Identify whether the problem is a local installation, an account authorization, or both.
- Do not launch unknown software or provide it with credentials.
- Delete the local item through the PS5 storage menu.
- Update system software and the affected title through the standard PlayStation interface.
- Use Safe Mode database rebuilding when deletion or game errors persist.
- Unlink unfamiliar services under Authorized Apps.
- Review purchases and account changes, then secure the account with a unique password or passkey, a console login passcode, and a checkout password.
- Use a USB cable only when the Safe Mode or USB recovery procedure requires a wired DualSense connection.
- Back up before considering Reset Your Console, because the reset erases console storage.
The safe path is therefore straightforward: remove local files with the PS5’s storage controls, revoke any unfamiliar account authorization, repair only with Sony’s supported update and Safe Mode tools, and reserve a full reset for a backed-up console that still cannot be recovered.
