What “returning to stock” means on a PS5
A stock PS5 is running Sony’s official system software with no unofficial application left in the user-facing storage and no altered configuration that you want to retain. The supported cleanup path is progressive: remove only the app, repair the content index if necessary, reset settings when settings are the problem, and reinstall the system software only when you need a full software reset.

These instructions cover software and settings. They do not provide a way to undo a physical hardware modification. If the console has been altered internally, or if Sony’s recovery process cannot complete, stop experimenting with unofficial files and use the official PlayStation Repairs diagnostic route or an authorized service channel.
Choose the recovery level before you erase anything
The option you choose determines what survives. Start at the top of the table and move downward only when the previous step does not solve the problem.

If your only symptom is a leftover icon, do not jump to the reinstall option. A database rebuild is designed for that index problem and avoids the data loss associated with a reset.
Prepare safely before touching Safe Mode or reset options
Save what you cannot replace
Write down any sign-in details, capture files, local saves or settings you will need after recovery. A full reinstall is not reversible through the console: anything left only on the PS5 is removed. If you are uncertain whether a file is synchronized elsewhere, treat it as local and preserve it before choosing a destructive option.
Disconnect unofficial tools and files
Remove exploit packages, altered update files and third-party recovery media from your workflow. Sony’s support instructions require the official reinstallation file and warn that data from another source, or a different installation method, can prevent proper operation or installation. Non-official methods can also affect warranty coverage and repair service.
Have the right accessories available
- A USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT is required for the reinstallation procedure.
- A USB data cable is required to connect a DualSense controller while the console is in Safe Mode. A cable that only supplies power may not work.
- The reinstall file needs approximately 1.2 GB of free space, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support instructions. The drive must have room for the required folders and file.
Do not interrupt a reset
Keep the console connected to reliable power and do not remove the USB drive while an installation is running. An interruption can leave the system unable to boot normally, requiring another Safe Mode attempt or service escalation.
Step 1: Delete the unofficial app from Storage
- Start the PS5 normally and open Settings from the home screen.
- Select Storage.
- Open the storage category that contains the unofficial app, select the app, and choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion and wait for the operation to finish before restarting.
Sony’s application-troubleshooting guidance uses deletion as the first remedy for a problematic application. This step targets the selected app rather than resetting the console, so it is the correct starting point when you simply want the unofficial software gone.
If the app cannot be selected
Restart the console normally and check Settings > Storage again. If the entry has disappeared but its icon is still visible on the home screen, continue to the database-rebuild step rather than attempting to delete random system files.
Step 2: Repair a leftover icon with Rebuild Database
A stale icon usually means the content index still references an item that is no longer present. Rebuild Database recreates that index; it is not a factory reset.

- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep; this starts Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB data cable, then press the controller’s PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Select Rebuild Database and allow the process to complete.
Sony identifies this operation as useful when a game or application icon remains after deletion. The console may restart during the process and the home-screen ordering can change because the index is being rebuilt. Do not power it off while the rebuild is running.
When a rebuild is enough
After the PS5 returns to the home screen, check whether the unwanted icon and any related menu entry are gone. If the console launches games, opens Settings and updates normally, there is no reason to perform a full reinstall merely to obtain a cleaner appearance.
When a rebuild is not enough
If the icon returns, the console will not boot normally, or system features fail, move to the settings or software-reinstallation options below according to the kind of failure. Do not install an unofficial replacement file to “repair” the index.
Step 3: Reset settings without removing stored content
Use Restore Default Settings when the problem is configuration rather than missing or damaged software. Sony states that this option leaves stored games, applications, captures, video clips and saved data intact.

- Open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > Reset Options.
- Select Restore Default Settings.
- Read the on-screen warning and confirm.
This returns system preferences to their defaults. Plan to configure the console again afterward, including any settings you changed for display, network, accessibility or controller behavior. It is not the option to choose if you specifically need to replace the installed system software.
Why this option is different from a factory reset
The similar wording can be confusing. Restore Default Settings changes settings while preserving the stored content described above. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) are destructive reset choices; select them only after your backup decision is complete.
Step 4: Reinstall official PS5 system software
Use this route when you need the most complete supported software reset, when system files are damaged, or when the earlier steps cannot remove the unwanted software state. Sony’s support statement is explicit: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.”

1. Back up before starting
Finish preserving required saves, captures, clips, account information and other files before you enter the reinstall flow. Once the reinstall begins, the console’s user data is deleted; there is no in-console undo command.
2. Format the USB drive
On a PC or Mac, format a USB flash drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything important from the drive first. Ensure at least approximately 1.2 GB of free capacity is available for Sony’s reinstallation file.
3. Create the exact folder structure
At the root of the USB drive, create a folder named PS5. Inside it, create a second folder named UPDATE. The names are shown in uppercase to make the required layout unambiguous:

Obtain the PS5 system-software reinstallation file from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official PS5 system-software support instructions. Save it inside PS5/UPDATE with the exact filename PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not rename it with an extra extension such as .PUP.PUP, place it in the drive’s root, or substitute a file from another source.
5. Start Safe Mode and run the reinstall
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the DualSense with a USB data cable and press the PS button.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Insert the prepared USB drive when the console requests the reinstallation media and follow the on-screen prompts.
The console will remove the existing user data and install the official software from the USB drive. Let the process finish without disconnecting power, the controller cable or the USB drive.

Troubleshooting common failure points
The icon remains after deleting the app
Run Rebuild Database from Safe Mode. The symptom matches the content-index problem that Sony’s guidance associates with that operation. Do not interpret the remaining icon as proof that a reinstall is immediately required.
Safe Mode does not appear
Turn the console off again and repeat the power-button hold, waiting for the second beep before releasing it. Connect the controller with a cable capable of carrying data, then press the PS button. If the console still cannot enter or remain in Safe Mode, stop using unofficial recovery media and escalate through PlayStation Repairs.

The USB drive is not recognized
- Confirm that the drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Check that the folders are exactly
PS5/UPDATEat the drive root. - Check that the file is exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUPand is insideUPDATE. - Make sure the download is Sony’s official reinstallation file, not a standard update file from another source.
- Reconnect the drive after the console is in the relevant Safe Mode prompt and follow the displayed instructions.
The reinstall reports that the file cannot be used
Recheck the filename, capitalization, folder depth and drive format. A file with a hidden second extension, a misspelled folder, or a file copied into the wrong directory will not satisfy the documented layout. Download the official file again rather than trying a modified package.
The console remains stuck after recovery
Do not cycle through unofficial firmware or exploit packages. Sony warns that altered consoles and non-official update methods may fail to operate or install updates and may affect warranty or repair services. Use the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool when the console remains stuck in Safe Mode, refuses to update or will not boot.

- Do not use a third-party firmware image. The supported reinstall requires Sony’s official file.
- Do not skip the backup decision. The reinstall option removes all user data.
- Do not assume Restore Default Settings is a software reinstall. It resets configuration but does not replace the system software.
- Do not remove power during a database rebuild or reinstall. Wait for the console to finish and restart.
- Do not treat a persistent icon as a reason to delete system folders manually. Use Rebuild Database first.
- Do not continue if the console has a hardware modification. Software recovery cannot substitute for professional inspection of altered hardware.
Verify the console after recovery
After app deletion or database rebuild
Confirm that the unofficial icon is gone, the Storage listing no longer shows the app, Settings opens normally and the console can start an ordinary game. If only preferences are wrong, use Restore Default Settings rather than escalating to a wipe.
After Restore Default Settings
Recheck the settings you rely on and verify that your installed games, applications, captures, clips and saves are still present. This check distinguishes a settings cleanup from a destructive reset.
After a system-software reinstall
Complete the initial setup, sign in through the normal PlayStation process, and install content only from official channels. Keep the USB drive and the downloaded file available until the console has completed setup and demonstrated that it can boot and update normally; then remove the recovery media from your routine use.
When to stop and seek official repair
Escalate rather than improvise if the PS5 cannot enter Safe Mode, repeatedly rejects a correctly prepared official drive, fails during installation, remains trapped in a boot loop, or will not accept normal updates after recovery. Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool is the appropriate next step for those symptoms. Tell the service channel exactly which supported action failed and whether the console has ever been altered; withholding that information can make diagnosis harder.
