To convert an OBS recording to MP4 without another encoding pass, use OBS’s built-in remux tool: open File > Remux Recordings, select the recording, and click Remux. OBS copies the encoded streams into an MP4 container; it does not change their codecs or fix compatibility problems. Keep the original recording until you have checked the MP4 in the app where you plan to use it.

Remux an existing OBS recording in the interface

  1. Stop the recording. Remux the completed file, and do not delete or overwrite the original yet.
  2. In OBS, choose File > Remux Recordings.
  3. In the file picker, select the recording you want to convert. You can select more than one recording for a batch.
  4. Click Remux and wait for OBS’s completion prompt.
  5. Open the resulting MP4 in your intended editor or player. Check that the picture, sound, duration, and any audio tracks you need are present before removing the source file.

The OBS Project documents this workflow in its Standard Recording Output Guide. Menu wording can vary by OBS version, so check the menus in your installed version if the labels differ.

What remuxing does—and what it does not do

A video file has a container (such as MKV or MP4) and encoded streams inside it, such as video and audio. Remuxing changes the container while copying the selected streams, rather than decoding and encoding them again. As a result, remuxing itself adds no quality loss from a new encoding pass and is generally quick, although no speed benchmark is established here. FFmpeg describes stream copy as useful for changing a container or modifying container-level metadata in its documentation.

Because the streams are copied, remuxing does not repair a damaged recording, change resolution, convert a codec, or make an unsupported audio or video codec playable in a particular editor. MP4 compatibility depends on the streams and on the software that opens the file. If remuxing fails or the destination app rejects the output, identify the source codecs and check what that app supports. You may need a different container or a separate transcode, which does decode and re-encode the streams and can affect quality.

Automatically remux future recordings to MP4

For recurring recordings, OBS can remux to MP4 as soon as you stop recording:

  1. Open Settings > Advanced in OBS.
  2. Enable Automatically remux to mp4.
  3. Apply the setting. After a future recording stops, OBS performs the remux automatically.

The OBS Project documents this option in its recording guide. Confirm the setting’s availability and wording in your installed OBS version.

Use FFmpeg for batch work or explicit stream selection

FFmpeg’s -c copy option copies streams without decoding or encoding. Its documentation gives this example:

ffmpeg -i INPUT.mkv -map 0:1 -c copy OUTPUT.mp4

Here, -map 0:1 selects the second stream in the first input; it does not mean “keep every video and audio track.” To attempt to copy all input streams, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4

Inspect the input streams and read FFmpeg’s output for warnings. Not every stream type can be carried into MP4, and stream copy can fail if the target container lacks required information or cannot accommodate a stream. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for stream mapping and options. If a destination app cannot decode a copied codec, this command will not make it compatible.

Why record to MKV before making an MP4

For recordings, OBS recommends MKV because an interrupted recording is less likely to lose the whole file. Traditional MP4 and MOV require finalization and may be unrecoverable if writing is interrupted before that happens. A practical workflow is to record to MKV, then remux after the recording is complete. See the OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide and Audio/Video Formats Guide.

OBS’s format guide lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video for MP4, but codec and audio compatibility can vary across container variants and third-party applications. The list is not a guarantee that every editor supports every resulting file; check the requirements for your target app.

Consider Hybrid MP4 for a future recording

Hybrid MP4 is a recording-format option documented by OBS as introduced in OBS 30.2. It writes fragmented data during recording and uses a “soft-remux” to finalize it, aiming to combine resilience during recording with a regular MP4 for compatible applications. The OBS Project lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video for Hybrid MP4 and qualifies PCM compatibility; software support still matters. This option concerns how a future recording is made, not how to remux an existing file. Check your OBS version and target app before choosing it. Details: OBS Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats.

Choose the workflow that fits

Workflow Best suited to Control and compatibility
OBS manual remux A one-off recording or a small batch Uses the OBS interface; the copied streams must still be compatible with MP4 and the destination app.
OBS automatic remux Future recordings you want in MP4 after stopping Runs when recording stops; the recording’s format and codec choices still determine what is being copied.
FFmpeg stream copy Batch jobs, scripts, or deliberate stream selection Offers explicit mapping but requires command-line familiarity and care with multiple streams and MP4 compatibility.

Troubleshooting remux problems

  • OBS reports an error or produces no usable MP4: Keep the source file. Check whether its streams can be carried into MP4; unsupported stream types or missing container information can prevent stream copy. Try a compatible container or transcode if the target app requires a different codec.
  • The MP4 opens, but there is no sound or a track is missing: Check which audio streams were in the source and, if using FFmpeg, whether your -map option selected them. Verify the output in the intended app.
  • The editor rejects the MP4: Remuxing preserved the codec rather than converting it. Compare the file’s video and audio codecs with the editor’s supported formats; changing the container again will not convert an unsupported codec.
  • A recording was interrupted: Try the original recording in OBS or a compatible player and retain it while assessing recovery. OBS recommends MKV for this risk because an interrupted traditional MP4/MOV may not be recoverable if finalization did not complete.

Or let it run in the cloud

Remuxing is for converting completed recordings. If your goal is instead to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery starts if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts.
