There is no universal “repair DirectX” button. The correct fix depends on whether the error is caused by missing legacy files, a graphics-driver crash, damaged Windows components, unsupported hardware, corrupted game files, or instability such as overheating or overclocking.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the main DirectX runtime is part of Windows and is serviced through Windows Update. Older games may separately need legacy DirectX 9 components. Use the least destructive fix that matches the error instead of downloading a third-party “DirectX repair” utility.
During DirectX troubleshooting, Outbyte PC Repair can inspect Windows components and missing updates as an optional supporting system check.

Before changing anything, record the error
Write down the exact message, affected game and version, and when the failure occurs. Note whether it began after a Windows update, graphics-driver update, game patch, hardware change, or overclock. Also record whether it affects one game or every game, and whether it happens at launch, during shader compilation, after loading a save, or only under demanding settings.
Check with DxDiag
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - On System, record DirectX Version.
- Open Display or Render.
- Record the GPU, driver date and version, Feature Levels, and any Notes.
- Select Save All Information to create a text report.
DxDiag is Microsoft’s built-in reporting tool for DirectX components and drivers. Its DirectX Version is the Windows runtime version. Feature Levels describe functionality exposed by the GPU and driver; they are not frame-rate ratings and are not the same numbering system as API versions or shader models.

Try the safe, reversible fixes
1. Restart Windows
A restart can complete a pending update, reload the graphics driver, and clear a temporary device state. It is useful, but it does not repair unsupported hardware or permanently damaged files.
2. Reset the graphics driver
For a frozen, flickering, blank, or corrupted display, press:
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
The screen may flicker or beep. This is a temporary driver reset, not a reinstallation. Microsoft documents the shortcut in its screen-flickering guidance.
3. Install Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Windows Update services the integrated DirectX runtime, but it does not always provide the newest game-optimized driver. For gaming problems, compare the Windows driver with the laptop manufacturer’s or GPU manufacturer’s official driver.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation may continue to run in 2026, but it no longer receives Microsoft’s normal free support and security updates. For a supported long-term setup, use a supported Windows release where the hardware permits it.
Fix missing DirectX DLL errors
If the message names a legacy file such as d3dx9_43.dll, xinput1_3.dll, or xaudio2_7.dll, install the official Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, linked from Microsoft’s DirectX support page.
This package supplies older side-by-side components used by some games. It does not replace DirectX 12, downgrade Windows, or make an incompatible GPU support newer features. The displayed DirectX version in DxDiag may remain unchanged.

Do not download individual DLL files from random websites. They may contain malware, be the wrong version or architecture, or conceal a damaged game installation. Do not copy a DLL manually into System32 or the game directory unless the game publisher specifically instructs you to do so.
Installing the legacy runtime may solve a clearly identified missing-file error, but it will not fix old copy-protection systems, incompatible fullscreen modes, broken game patches, or unsupported hardware.
Update, roll back, or reinstall the graphics driver
Identify the adapter
Use Device Manager > Display adapters or the Display/Render tab in DxDiag. Common vendors include NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For laptops and prebuilts, check the computer manufacturer first. OEM drivers may include power-management and hybrid-graphics components that a generic desktop driver lacks. For desktop GPUs, use the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel support site. Avoid generic driver-updater subscriptions.
Roll back a recent update
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open:
Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click the GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver
The button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver package. If multiple games began failing at once, rollback is often more appropriate than reinstalling DirectX.

Use the vendor installer’s clean option
A clean installation is reasonable when the driver update was interrupted, several games crash, Device Manager shows a warning symbol, or the vendor control panel is malfunctioning. Prefer the graphics vendor’s own clean installation option first. Full third-party driver-removal tools are advanced procedures, not the default first step.
For Intel graphics, follow Intel’s documented clean-installation procedure. On hybrid-graphics laptops, also check that the game is using the intended discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics. Windows graphics preferences, the laptop vendor’s utility, and the GPU control panel may all affect adapter selection.
Repair Windows system components with DISM and SFC
Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or an elevated Command Prompt. Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the game again. Microsoft recommends this order because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source.

Repair the game before reinstalling Windows
If one game fails while other games work, treat its files and configuration as the primary suspects:
- Use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command.
- Remove unofficial mods and custom DLL injectors temporarily.
- Disable overlays and capture tools, including Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, RGB utilities, monitoring tools, and recording software.
- Remove unusual launch parameters and test the game’s default settings.
- Rebuild the game’s shader cache only when appropriate. The first launch may take longer and stutter temporarily while shaders compile again.
- Reinstall the game only after verification and runtime repair fail.
For Microsoft Store apps, where the controls are available, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > select the app > Advanced options > Repair. If Repair fails, Reset may help, but it can remove app data or settings. Microsoft describes these controls in its app repair guidance.
Test a different graphics API or safer settings
When the game officially supports them, test one change at a time:
- DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12, or DirectX 12 instead of DirectX 11
- Vulkan, if offered
- Windowed or borderless mode
- Lower texture quality or resolution
- Ray tracing disabled
- Frame generation and other hardware-accelerated effects disabled
- A capped frame rate
Switching APIs is a compatibility workaround, not a repair of DirectX itself. It can identify a game-specific renderer, driver, or feature problem.
On Windows 11, Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed and borderless modes. Find it under Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game’s custom options, change the setting, and restart the game. It is not a universal fix for DirectX 12 crashes.

Understand feature-level and hardware errors
A message such as “feature level 11_0 required” or “DirectX 12 not supported” may describe a real hardware limitation. Check the GPU’s Feature Levels in DxDiag and compare them with the game’s published minimum requirements.
Direct3D feature levels are capability targets. API version, feature level, shader model, optional features such as ray tracing, driver support, and performance are separate considerations. Microsoft notes that Direct3D 12 drivers support feature level 11_0 or better, but that does not mean every DirectX 12 feature is available on every GPU.

If the GPU is below the game’s required feature level, software repair cannot add that capability. Your options are to use another supported API, disable the feature if the game allows it, update the driver, or upgrade the GPU or computer. Cloud gaming or remote play may be alternatives for some titles.
Diagnose device-removed errors and instability
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, and “DirectX function failed” messages commonly follow a graphics-device reset. Possible causes include a driver failure, unstable GPU or CPU overclock, overheating, defective VRAM, insufficient power, overlays, a game bug, or a failing GPU.
Recommended Free Tools
Return GPU, CPU, RAM, and VRAM settings to stock values. Check temperatures and power connections, test without overlays, and update or roll back the driver. If crashes appear in multiple games or other graphics workloads, stop treating the issue as a simple DirectX installation problem and investigate the hardware, power supply, cooling, cables, and display.
External displays, USB-C docks, eGPUs, multiple adapters, and Remote Desktop sessions can change which GPU an application sees. Test with a direct display connection and the intended adapter where possible.
Use Windows recovery only after normal repairs
Back up important files before recovery or reset operations. If the failure began after a recent driver, application, or system change, System Restore may be appropriate. Windows Recovery Environment also provides options such as uninstalling recent updates, Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt, and Reset this PC. Microsoft’s recovery guide maps these tools to different failure types.
A repair reinstall or in-place reinstall can help when Windows itself is damaged. Reset this PC is a last-resort software step:
- Keep my files preserves personal files but removes apps and settings.
- Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings.
- Cloud download obtains a fresh Windows image.
- Local reinstall uses files already on the PC.
“Keep my files” is not a substitute for a backup. Confirm that saves, documents, authentication data, and other important files are stored safely before resetting.
What not to do
- Do not install random “latest DirectX” packages claiming to upgrade DirectX 12.
- Do not download individual DLLs from unofficial sites.
- Do not use registry cleaners as a DirectX repair method.
- Do not assume a paid driver updater is safer or newer than the OEM or GPU manufacturer.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall DirectX without identifying the error category.
- Do not remove drivers or reset Windows before backing up important data.
Final escalation checklist
Contact the game publisher when one title still fails after file verification, runtime installation, overlay removal, and supported API tests. Contact the laptop or PC manufacturer when an OEM system has hybrid-graphics, firmware, power, or warranty symptoms. Contact the GPU vendor for reproducible driver failures across several games. Seek professional hardware diagnosis when crashes occur across multiple graphics workloads, temperatures are abnormal, the display shows artifacts, or the GPU fails under stock settings.
When reporting the issue, include the exact error, game version, Windows edition and build, GPU model, driver version and date, DxDiag report, crash logs if available, recent changes, and the steps that already failed.
