Repair Microsoft 365 from Windows Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps and Features (Windows 10): select your Microsoft 365 or Office entry, choose Modify, then run Quick Repair. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the process with Online Repair. Quick Repair is faster and replaces damaged local files; Online Repair downloads a more complete installation. Neither option is intended to delete documents, spreadsheets, presentations, mail, or other files you created.
This guide covers diagnosis, repair choices, crashes, activation errors such as Unlicensed Product, and the documented uninstall-and-reinstall escalation for Windows PCs.

What Microsoft 365 repair actually changes
The repair command works on the installed Microsoft 365 or Office suite, not just the application showing the symptom. A Word-only failure can therefore trigger a repair of the complete installed suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other components present in that installation.

Repairing the installation is separate from repairing user content. Microsoft states that uninstalling Microsoft 365 removes the applications from the computer but does not remove files, documents or workbooks created with those applications. Still, save open work, close Office programs and keep a current backup before making major changes.
Check the symptom before changing Office
Close every Office process
Save work and close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and other Office programs. If an app appears closed but repair is blocked, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select a remaining Microsoft Office process and choose End task. Do not end unrelated Windows processes.
Decide whether the problem is installation, add-in or account related
- A missing-file message, several Office apps failing together, or an error immediately after an update points toward an installation repair.
- A crash that occurs only with one workbook, template or Outlook profile may be caused by that content rather than the suite.
- A crash that disappears when add-ins are disabled suggests an extension or startup component.
- Unlicensed Product, repeated sign-in prompts or subscription warnings indicate activation or account trouble even when the installation itself is healthy.
Try Office Safe Mode for a crash or startup failure
Hold Ctrl while opening the affected Office shortcut and confirm the Safe Mode prompt. You can also open the Windows Run dialog with Win+R and use one of these commands:

excel /safeoutlook /safewinword /safepowerpnt /safe
Safe Mode starts the application without many add-ins and startup customizations. If the crash disappears, open the app normally, disable recently added or updated add-ins, restart and test again. If the crash remains in Safe Mode, continue to installation repair. Safe Mode is a diagnostic launch, not a permanent repair.

Microsoft describes Quick Repair this way: “The faster Quick Repair option is also available, but it only detects and then replaces corrupted files.” Online Repair is the broader choice when local replacement is insufficient.
Run Quick Repair on Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft 365 or the specific Office product listed on your PC.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry and choose Modify. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks.
- In the repair dialog, select Quick Repair, then choose Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish. Do not shut down the computer or interrupt the process.
- Restart Windows, open the previously affected app and reproduce the original action.
If the dialog offers only Repair inside a Change your installation window, the installation may be MSI-based; use that repair command and follow its prompts.

Run Quick Repair on Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Apps and Features.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office entry and click Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair, select Repair, and approve any permission prompt.
- Restart Windows and test the affected Office app.
The exact product name can vary by edition, but the repair action applies to the installed suite. Repairing from the app list does not target only the icon you selected inside Office.

- Close all Office apps and connect the PC to a stable internet connection.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps and Features in Windows 10.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office entry, choose Modify, and select Online Repair.
- Choose Repair and allow the download and installation process to complete. Keep the computer powered on.
- Restart Windows, sign in if prompted, open the affected application and test it.
Online Repair can take substantially longer than Quick Repair because it obtains fresh installation components. It is the appropriate next step when Quick Repair cannot replace all damaged files or when multiple Office applications fail.
If Office still crashes after repair
Re-test without add-ins
Launch the app in Safe Mode again. If it works there, open the normal application and inspect File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage to the relevant add-in type, choose Go, clear recently installed or updated extensions and restart. Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the trigger.

Check the scope of the failure
- If only one file crashes, create a blank document or workbook and test that. A damaged template, workbook, presentation or document can be the cause.
- If every Office app fails, check whether Windows recently installed an update, security product or conflicting Office edition.
- If Outlook alone fails, test Outlook Safe Mode and consider whether an add-in or profile is involved before repeatedly repairing the entire suite.
Remove duplicate Office installations
Open Settings > Apps and look for multiple Microsoft 365, Office, trial or language-pack entries. Duplicate versions can interfere with activation and file associations. Keep the installation you actually use and remove obsolete duplicates only after confirming which account and edition you need.

An activation failure does not prove that Office files are corrupted. Work through account and subscription checks before assuming another repair is required.
- Close every Office application.
- Open your Microsoft account or work/school account subscription page and confirm that the Microsoft 365 subscription is active for the account that purchased or received it.
- Sign back into Office with that same associated account. A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account are not interchangeable if the license belongs to only one of them.
- In Windows Settings > Apps, remove duplicate or expired Office installations if more than one edition is present.
- Open an Office app and check whether the activation notice has cleared.
- If the account and subscription are correct but activation still fails, run Online Repair using the procedure above, then sign in again after the repair.
Subscription status, account ownership and duplicate installations are separate from file corruption. Repair can refresh the installation, but it cannot grant a license to an account that does not have one.

Uninstall and reinstall when both repair modes fail
Microsoft’s documented escalation after unsuccessful Quick Repair and Online Repair is to uninstall Microsoft 365 and install it again.
- Save documents, close Office programs and make sure you know the Microsoft account or work/school account tied to the license.
- Use Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 uninstall troubleshooter when it supports your Office product and Windows version. The troubleshooter’s availability varies, so verify that the current support page lists your edition before relying on it.
- Follow the troubleshooter’s prompts to remove the Office applications.
- Restart Windows when prompted, or restart immediately after the removal completes.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or subscription and download the installer for your edition.
- Install Microsoft 365, open an Office app and sign in to activate it.
- Test the application with a new blank file before restoring add-ins and custom templates.
Uninstalling removes the applications, not the documents, workbooks or other files you created with them. Files stored in cloud services, network locations or local folders remain separate from the program removal, but you should still maintain backups and confirm that important files are synchronized before uninstalling.
Common pitfalls and recovery choices
- Repair button is missing: Select the correct Microsoft 365 or Office entry rather than an individual language pack, runtime or viewer. MSI installations show a different Change dialog.
- Online Repair will not start: Check internet access, pause a restrictive proxy or captive-portal connection, and retry after closing Office processes.
- Repair stops partway: Leave the PC powered on, restart Windows and run the repair again. If repeated attempts fail, move to uninstall and reinstall.
- Office opens but a document does not: Test a blank file first; the document or template may be damaged. Do not repeatedly repair the suite for a single corrupt file.
- Activation returns after reinstall: Sign in with the account associated with the subscription and remove duplicate editions. Reinstalling does not change which account owns a license.
- Files appear missing: Check the original local, OneDrive, SharePoint or network location. Repair and uninstall target applications, not the locations where user files are stored.
Windows scope and Mac limitation
The click paths and repair choices in this guide apply to Microsoft 365 and Office installations on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft provides separate uninstall and reinstall instructions for Mac, where the menus, package structure and removal process differ. Do not apply the Windows troubleshooter or registry-oriented advice to a Mac; use the current Mac-specific Microsoft instructions for that platform.
