To change what viewers see in a YouTube livestream generated by a cloud playout service, edit the source video or playlist in that service—not in YouTube Studio. For Upstream, the documented method is to update the playlist and publish the changes; its help guide says those changes can appear in the active livestream. The exact controls and behavior vary by host.
First identify where the stream is being generated
YouTube Studio manages the destination livestream, including its event settings and connection details. The cloud playout service supplies the video. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder with a YouTube Live server URL and stream key, while its stream-settings page covers YouTube-side metadata and connection settings. Those controls do not replace a file stored in a separate cloud service. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings explain the YouTube side.
If you are unsure which system controls playback, check where the video was uploaded and which service is sending the stream to YouTube. If you use a local encoder rather than cloud playout, you will need to change the source in that encoder or its playlist; the cloud-host instructions below will not apply.
Replace or reorder the video in Upstream
Upstream’s help guide documents adding and removing media-library files, rearranging the video playlist, and publishing changes while streaming. Follow the corresponding controls in your account; labels may change as the service updates.

- Open the stream’s edit page or Media Library. Find the stream and the video playlist that supplies its content.
- Upload the replacement file if needed. Confirm the new video is available in the library before changing the playlist.
- Update the playlist. Remove or de-queue the old item, add the replacement, and check its position. You can also rearrange playlist items.
- Publish or save the changes. Upstream says playlist edits can be made during an active stream and reflected in the livestream when published. Its guide describes both YouTube Connect and manual RTMP connection paths; either way, make the content change in Upstream.
- Verify the result. Check Upstream’s preview and the YouTube watch page. Confirm the intended video is playing and that both picture and sound are correct. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream quality; see its live streaming guidance.
If the old video is playing right now
Upstream’s guide supports publishing playlist changes during a stream, but does not specify exactly what happens when you change the item currently on air. It does not establish whether playback cuts immediately, waits until the item ends, or transitions seamlessly. If timing matters, check Upstream’s current instructions and watch the preview before relying on the change. Playlist replacement is documented; overwriting the playing file in place is not.
Keep a backup of the livestream
Keep a local recording or archive where practical. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on an automatic archive as the only copy of a long broadcast. See YouTube’s archiving guidance.
