Start by checking whether the injured receiver is expected to miss time, then look for his direct backup on waivers. Compare that player with your healthy bench and other available receivers by role, repeatable opportunity, matchup, and claim cost. If no waiver option is convincing, set your lineup with a healthy eligible player and explore a trade that fills a need for both teams.
1. Confirm the injury and how long you need a replacement
Before dropping anyone or making an offer, verify the receiver’s latest injury status and whether an absence is actually expected. Injury reports change, so use current team and league information rather than relying on an older update. Check whether your league has an injured reserve slot and whether the player qualifies under that league’s rules.
The likely length of the absence matters: a one-week fill-in and a replacement you may need for several weeks are not necessarily the same decision. Also confirm your league’s scoring, roster positions, and flex eligibility; those settings affect which alternatives can help your actual lineup.
2. Check the direct backup, then judge the role
Look first for the injured receiver’s direct backup on waivers. NFL.com fantasy analyst Marcas Grant identifies replacing injured players as a primary use of the waiver wire and recommends checking whether a candidate is a regular starter or positioned to play a lot (NFL.com’s “Fantasy 201: In-season roster management strategy”).

A backup may inherit a larger role, but that does not mean he will inherit the starter’s full production. Compare candidates by the opportunity they are likely to receive, not just by the name of the player they replace or one eye-catching box score. A regular role and steady involvement are generally more useful signals than a single big game from someone who is not consistently involved.
Use recent numbers as evidence, not a promise
In its Week 4, 2026 waiver article, NFL.com named Kalif Raymond as a receiver add and reported that he had caught six of seven targets for 90 yards and a touchdown in the preceding Monday game. The article also cited a 23.1% team target share and 19 catches through three Sundays, while describing him as an iffy play against the Jets in Week 4 (NFL.com’s Week 4, 2026 waiver article). Those figures illustrate the kinds of usage and role evidence to examine; they are a dated example, not a recommendation for a later week. Player availability, injuries, and matchups change quickly.

3. Weigh the matchup against the cost of a claim
Consider the receiver’s upcoming opponents alongside his expected role. A promising player may still be a poor short-term fit if his role is uncertain and the schedule is unattractive. Balance that outlook against what your league’s waiver system makes you spend: priority, a blind bid, or another resource. Waiver mechanics vary, so there is no universal claim-cost rule or guaranteed projection.
- Is the player likely to have a meaningful, repeatable role?
- Does the upcoming matchup suit a short-term fill-in, or are you adding him for longer-term usefulness?
- Is the expected improvement worth the waiver priority or budget you would use?
- Can he occupy an eligible roster or flex spot under your league’s settings?
4. Set the immediate lineup with a healthy eligible player
Do not leave the lineup unresolved while you pursue a better option. Use the strongest healthy, eligible bench or flex receiver already on your roster for the next lock, then make a waiver claim or trade if it would improve the team. Check your platform’s lineup deadline and eligibility rules before the first relevant game; a later transaction may not help with a lineup that has already locked.

5. Trade if a waiver add does not solve the problem
A trade is most plausible when the other manager has receiver depth but needs something your roster can provide—ideally at a position where you have surplus. Assess the deal by whether it makes your usable lineup stronger, not by whether it appears to have a winner on paper. A trade can cost you useful depth, and the other manager may not accept it. Grant’s advice is to trade in order to make your team better, rather than to complete a deal for its own sake (NFL.com’s roster-management guidance).
6. Verify your league’s transaction rules
Waiver timing and priority, blind-bid procedures, trade review periods, transaction processing, and trade deadlines depend on the platform, league settings, and season. NFL Fantasy’s Official Rules 2025 describe that platform’s 2025 processes; they are not universal rules and should not be assumed to apply to another league or season. Check your own league’s settings before relying on a claim, trade, or deadline.
