Yes, sometimes—but a character’s death does not unlock a special replay button. To revisit a completed quest, use Blizzard’s Party Sync with a friend whose character still has that quest unfinished. If the quest is eligible, it appears for you as a temporary Replay Quest. The replay ends when Party Sync ends, rewards are available once per day, and quests with major story implications may be excluded.
What happens when a quest character dies?
World of Warcraft does not document a separate exception for quests involving an NPC or other story character who later dies. The game checks the quest’s replay eligibility and the party’s quest states, not whether the featured character is alive in the current story.

That distinction matters because a completed quest is normally recorded as complete on your character. There is no supported command or menu option that permanently clears that completion flag on your main. A death in the narrative does not reset it, and it does not guarantee that the quest can be played again.

The official way to revisit an eligible completed quest is Party Sync. You temporarily synchronize with a party member who has not completed the quest. During that synchronized session, the completed quest can be offered to you as a Replay Quest. This is a temporary viewing and playing opportunity, not a rewrite of your character’s quest history.

The official method: Party Sync Replay Quests
What Party Sync does
Party Sync aligns the party’s quest progression so that players with different histories can quest together. Blizzard’s Party Sync documentation specifically says that players who have already completed certain quests can replay them with friends who have not.
The friend’s unfinished quest is essential. Party Sync needs an active, incomplete version of the quest in the group. If every member has already completed it, there is no lower quest state for the party to synchronize to, so your completed quest will not become replayable through this method.
What a Replay Quest looks like
After synchronization, check the quest tracker and nearby quest offers. A quest you completed previously may be identified as a Replay Quest. Blizzard describes these as quests you have already done that can be played again with friends who have not done them.
- A Replay Quest can be accepted and played while Party Sync is active.
- The quest is temporary; it disappears when Party Sync ends.
- Replay rewards can be earned once per day.
- Some quests are deliberately excluded because of their story implications.
The exclusion rule is important for a quest centered on a dead character. If the quest belongs to a branch whose events would be misleading or disruptive when replayed, Blizzard may leave it out. Party Sync cannot override that design decision.
Prepare the party before you start
The most common mistake is beginning the sync before confirming that another character still has the exact quest. Ask your friend to check the quest on the character they intend to use, then invite that character to the party. The useful quest state is incomplete; merely having visited the quest giver, remembering the storyline, or having completed a different step in the same arc is not enough to establish the state Party Sync needs.
Have the quest name ready so you can verify the result quickly after synchronization. If your goal is a particular conversation, cinematic, or encounter, decide whether you need to accept the replay quest yourself or simply accompany the friend through their normal version. Party Sync’s replay feature is for eligible completed quests and is separate from permanently changing either player’s quest history.
It is also worth planning enough uninterrupted time to complete the scene while the group remains synced. Ending the session removes the temporary replay quest, so a rushed start can leave you needing to arrange another session. If the quest is not offered, do not repeatedly reset unrelated quests on your main; first check the friend’s quest state, the confirmation prompts, and the quest’s eligibility.

Step-by-step: replay a completed quest with a friend
- Find a character that still has the quest. Ask a friend to use a character whose quest is incomplete. The friend does not need to be replaying the quest; the unfinished quest state is what allows Party Sync to offer it to you.
- Invite that player to your party. Form the party before attempting to synchronize. If several people are joining, make sure the player with the incomplete quest is in the same party.
- Open Map & Quest Log. Press M in the default key binding to open the map and quest interface.
- Start Party Sync. Click Start Party Sync in the lower-right corner of the Map & Quest Log.
- Accept the confirmation dialog. Every party member must accept the synchronization prompt. If one person declines or does not confirm, the group will not enter the synchronized state.
- Check your quest tracker. Look for quests marked as Replay Quests. Accept the one you want to revisit and play it while the synchronization remains active.
- Finish before leaving sync. The replay opportunity is tied to Party Sync. Once synchronization ends, the replay quest disappears from your temporary quest view.
Party Sync is therefore best treated as a planned group session: identify the friend’s unfinished quest first, start the sync together, verify that the replay marker appears, and complete the content before anyone ends the session.
Understanding the quest icons and missing quests
No icon
Blizzard says quests that cannot be replayed do not show a replay icon. This generally means the quest is not eligible for Party Sync replay, rather than that you have missed a hidden activation step. Story-impacting quests can fall into this category, as can content excluded for other design reasons.
Grey icon
A grey icon means the group does not qualify at that moment. Check the party’s quest states and synchronization status. In particular, confirm that the friend still has the quest incomplete and that every party member accepted the Party Sync confirmation.
The quest is not in the tracker
Verify that Party Sync actually started, then inspect the tracker again. If the friend abandoned or completed the quest before the group synchronized, the required unfinished state may no longer exist. Re-forming the party and repeating the procedure with a character that still has the quest is the practical fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe quest appears but vanishes
This is expected when Party Sync ends. Replay Quests are not permanent additions to your quest log. Start another synchronized session if you need to revisit the content again, subject to the feature’s eligibility and daily reward limit.
The quest is a daily or World Quest
Repeatable quests such as dailies and World Quests cannot be replayed through Party Sync. Their normal repeatable structure is separate from the Replay Quest feature, so Party Sync will not turn them into a cinematic or story replay of a previous completion.
A replay is not a restoration of the old world state
Party Sync presents a temporary quest opportunity; it does not make the dead character alive again in the current timeline, rebuild a removed phase, or roll your character back to an earlier point. The quest is being experienced under the synchronized party state. Once that state ends, your normal completed history remains intact.
This explains why a replay can be useful for dialogue or a remembered scene without changing later story content. It also explains why there is no guarantee that every line, branch, or reward will behave like a first completion. Blizzard’s eligibility rules decide which quests can be offered, and the feature’s reward allowance is separate from the fact that the quest can temporarily appear.
What you can and cannot replay
| Situation | Expected result | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You completed a standard quest and a friend has it incomplete | It may appear as a Replay Quest during Party Sync | The party can synchronize to the friend’s unfinished quest state |
| The quest is tied to a story branch Blizzard excludes | It will not be offered as a Replay Quest | Some story-impacting quests are excluded case by case |
| Everyone in the party completed the quest | No replay offer | There is no incomplete party state to synchronize to |
| The quest is a daily or World Quest | Party Sync cannot replay it | These repeatable quest types are outside the feature |
| Party Sync has ended | The temporary replay quest disappears | Replay status exists only during synchronization |
| You already claimed the replay reward today | You can play only within the feature’s daily reward rules | Replay rewards are limited to once per day |
The table separates two questions that are often confused: whether you can see and play a quest again, and whether you can receive its replay reward again immediately. A quest may be available during a valid sync session even though the reward allowance has already been used for the day.
Does the character’s death change the answer?
No special “dead character” mode is documented. The death may make the story emotionally or chronologically important, but it does not alter the Party Sync rules. Eligibility still depends on the quest itself and on the party’s synchronized progression.
That means there are two possible outcomes:
- Eligible quest: a friend’s incomplete copy lets you experience the quest again as a temporary Replay Quest, even though your character already completed it and the featured character later died.
- Excluded quest: the quest will not become replayable merely because you found a friend who has not completed it. Story-impact exclusions take precedence over the friend’s quest state.
If your goal is to see the dead character’s scenes or dialogue again, Party Sync is worth trying first for an individual quest. If your goal is to experience the entire arc in sequence, a broader story recap or replay mode may be a better fit.
Revisit a larger story arc without resetting your main
Returning Player Catch Up Experience
Blizzard’s returning-player material describes a Catch Up Experience that can be started from character selection or from the Adventure Guide’s Tutorials tab. During the guided sequence, existing quests are hidden so you can concentrate on reacclimating rather than sorting through your normal quest log.
The same guide describes a War Within recap that walks through that expansion’s story and presents key cinematics. This is useful when the missing context is broader than one quest involving a deceased character. It is a guided recap experience, not a command that clears completed quests or restores old NPC states on your original character.
Legion Remix
Legion Remix is a separate, time-limited mode designed to let players replay Legion content at an accelerated pace. Blizzard describes its scope as including Legion Campaign quests, local stories, World Quests, Class Order Hall campaigns, and Artifact questlines.
Rank #4
A World of Warcraft subscription or game time is required to access the game. Because Legion Remix is seasonal and time-limited, its availability depends on whether the mode is currently running. It also recreates the content inside its own mode rather than resetting the completed-quest flags on your retail character.
When a recap is better than Party Sync
Party Sync is precise but narrow: it targets an individual eligible quest and requires coordination with another player. A recap is more useful when you have forgotten the order of events, want several cinematics together, or cannot find someone who still has the needed quest. The returning-player material is designed as a guided experience, so it may be easier for story context than arranging multiple Party Sync sessions.

Choosing the right method
| Method | Scope | Requires another player? | Persistence | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Party Sync Replay Quest | One eligible completed quest at a time | Yes; a party member must have the quest incomplete | Temporary during Party Sync | Story-impacting quests may be excluded; replay rewards are once per day |
| Returning Player Catch Up / War Within recap | Guided reacclimation, recap material, and selected story sequence | No party requirement is stated | Limited to that experience | Existing quests are hidden during the catch-up sequence; it does not reset your quest log |
| Legion Remix | Broad Legion campaign and related content | No party requirement is stated | Available only while the time-limited mode runs | Requires a World of Warcraft subscription or game time and is seasonal |
Use Party Sync when you want one specific quest and can coordinate with someone who still has it. Use the returning-player material when you mainly need a story refresher or cinematics. Choose Legion Remix when the content you want is part of Legion and the seasonal mode is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you reset completed quests on your main?
Not through the documented methods. Party Sync temporarily presents eligible completed quests; it does not erase your completion history. The Catch Up Experience and War Within recap provide their own guided content, and Legion Remix runs in its own time-limited mode. None is described as a permanent reset of your character’s completed-quest flags.
Because there is no supported reset path in the documented feature rules, avoid abandoning unrelated quests or changing characters in the hope that the original completion will be removed. The reliable approach is to use the feature that matches your objective: Party Sync for a single eligible quest, a recap for story context, or a dedicated replay mode for a larger expansion arc.
A practical checklist before you start
- Write down the exact quest you want to revisit and identify a friend whose character has not completed it.
- Invite that character before opening Map & Quest Log.
- Press M, choose Start Party Sync, and wait for every party member to accept.
- Look for the Replay Quest marker rather than assuming every completed quest will be listed.
- If the icon is grey, recheck the party’s quest states and synchronization confirmation.
- If there is no icon, treat the quest as potentially ineligible, especially if it changes or depends on major story events.
- Do not use Party Sync for dailies or World Quests; Blizzard excludes those repeatable types.
- Plan around the once-per-day replay-reward limit.
- Remember that ending Party Sync removes the temporary replay quest.
- If one quest is not available, switch to a recap or a broader replay mode instead of trying to reset your main’s quest history.
The bottom line for a dead character’s questline
A character’s death does not make a completed quest permanently replayable. Party Sync is the official route for an eligible individual quest: join a friend who has it unfinished, start Party Sync from Map & Quest Log, accept the prompts, and look for the Replay Quest marker. The opportunity lasts only while synchronized, rewards are once per day, and some story-critical quests are excluded. For a complete arc or its cinematics, use the returning-player recap when it covers the material, or Legion Remix for its available Legion content; neither option resets your main character’s quest history.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I replay a WoW quest I already completed?
Invite a player whose character still has the quest incomplete, open Map & Quest Log with M, choose Start Party Sync, and have everyone accept the confirmation. If the quest is eligible, it appears as a temporary Replay Quest.
Can I redo a quest after the NPC dies?
The NPC’s death does not create a special exception. You can replay the quest only if Blizzard allows that quest through Party Sync and a party member supplies the required incomplete quest state.
Does Party Sync reset completed quests on my main?
No. It temporarily presents an eligible completed quest while synchronization is active. Your original completion record remains, and the replay disappears when Party Sync ends.

A grey icon means the group does not qualify at that moment. Confirm that the friend still has the quest incomplete and that every party member accepted the Party Sync prompt.
Why is there no replay icon at all?
Blizzard says quests that cannot be replayed do not show an icon. The quest may be excluded because of story implications or another eligibility rule, rather than because you missed a hidden step.
Can Party Sync replay dailies or World Quests?
No. Repeatable quests such as dailies and World Quests are outside the Replay Quest feature.
How often can I receive replay rewards?
Replay rewards are limited to once per day. The temporary quest status and the reward allowance are separate considerations.
What if I want the whole story arc instead of one quest?
Use the Returning Player Catch Up Experience or its War Within recap when it covers the material. For Legion content, Legion Remix can replay a broad selection of campaigns and related activities while the seasonal mode is available.
The Bottom Line
Use Party Sync with a friend who has the quest unfinished, but expect only a temporary replay of eligible quests. A character’s death does not bypass exclusions or reset your main. For larger story arcs, use the returning-player recap or an available Legion Remix season.
