Keep dated, unaltered files and page captures, compare specific expressive details, then use the service’s official copyright-reporting form. A platform takedown is a separate process from copyright registration or protection for a vessel hull design, and it does not decide whether infringement occurred.
Document the original artwork and suspected copy
Build a record that lets someone else identify what you created, what appeared elsewhere, and when you found it. Keep original evidence separate from any notes or comparison markup you make.
- Preserve the original. Save an untouched copy of the artwork and, if available, its source files, sketches, drafts, dated exports, and earlier publication records. Keep working copies for annotations. If the original is a paper drawing, a clear scan or photograph can make it easier to preserve and share; digitizing it does not by itself establish authorship or infringement.
- Capture the suspected copy in context. Record the full page address, the publicly displayed account or seller identity, and the date and time you viewed it. Save a screenshot or page copy if the service permits. Keep the capture unaltered; make a separate copy for highlighting or notes.
- Make a labeled comparison. Put equivalent views of the original and suspected copy side by side. Label each work and note relevant creation or publication dates. Identify particular expressive details you believe were reused rather than relying only on a general impression that the designs look alike.
- Keep a chronology. Save communications with the poster, platform, or other parties, including report confirmations and any replies or counter-notices. List events by date so the sequence is clear. The U.S. Copyright Claims Board advises claimants to keep copies of works and related communications and to organize and explain the facts (CCB claimant guidance).
These are practical recordkeeping steps, not a universal checklist imposed on every platform. For a vessel-design registration deposit, the Copyright Office separately requires clear, complete drawings or photographs with enough views to show the design adequately (Registration of Vessel Designs).
Compare the designs without treating similarity as proof
Record what is actually shared and what differs. Compare equivalent angles or views, and point to details that appear in both works. Separate those details from broad ideas and functional features: a similar overall concept or practical hull feature does not, on its own, establish that protected expression was copied.

The Copyright Claims Board says a claimant must show ownership of a valid copyright and unauthorized use; access to the original and substantial similarity of protected expression can be relevant. Those considerations do not create a one-factor test, and a visual resemblance alone does not settle ownership or infringement (I Want to File a Copyright Infringement Claim).
Report the material through the platform’s official copyright process
For material posted online, use the service provider’s current official copyright-reporting route. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) provides a notice-and-takedown framework, and qualifying service providers designate agents to receive notices. The exact form and information requested vary by service; consult its own current instructions rather than assuming one platform’s checklist applies everywhere (U.S. Copyright Office: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

When completing the form, identify the original work and the specific material you want reviewed, state where each appears, and provide a way for the platform to contact you. Be precise about the reported page or item, and retain a copy of what you submit and any confirmation. A report is a request under the platform’s process, not a court ruling about the merits.
Know what a counter-notice can change
If the poster submits a compliant counter-notice, the provider may restore access to the material after 10 to 14 business days unless the original sender informs the provider that it has filed a court action. The U.S. Copyright Office describes this interval in its explanation of Section 512; it is part of the counter-notice process, not a guaranteed outcome in every dispute (Section 512 of Title 17).

Read any notice from the service carefully and consider qualified legal advice if ownership is disputed, the commercial stakes are significant, or you are deciding whether to pursue court action. A counter-notice is not itself a final determination of who owns the rights.
Distinguish an artwork claim from vessel-hull design protection
“Ship design” can refer to different things: an illustration of a ship, a design embodied in an actual vessel hull, or both. The U.S. Vessel Hull Design Protection Act addresses qualifying original designs embodied in vessel hulls, including hull-and-deck combinations, subject to statutory conditions and exceptions. The Copyright Office explains that this protection differs from copyright in ownership, eligibility, scope, term, and procedure; a separate copyright registration may be needed for a copyright claim (Registration of Vessel Designs; Chapter 13: Protection of Original Designs).

The vessel-design application described by the Copyright Office must be made within two years after the design is made public. That route concerns a qualifying vessel design, not automatically a standalone drawing in the same way. Identify whether the disputed material is an image, a hull design, or both before choosing which rights or reporting process may apply.
