If you own a game, video, soundtrack, artwork, or other copyrighted material—or have the owner’s written authority—preserve the exact upload URL and evidence, then file a copyright notice with every service hosting a copy. A YouTube notice does not remove a Twitch stream, Steam page, social post, or mirror. Viewers who do not own the rights should preserve evidence and use ordinary report tools or alert the rights holder instead of submitting a DMCA notice.
Who can submit a copyright takedown?
A copyright takedown is a legal notice from the copyright owner or an authorized agent to a hosting or platform service. The claimant must be able to identify the copyrighted work, explain why the use is unauthorized, provide reliable contact information, and sign statements made under penalty of perjury.

In the United States, you do not generally need to register a work with the U.S. Copyright Office before sending a takedown notice. Registration is generally required before suing over infringement of a U.S. work. A notice is therefore a request to a service to remove or disable access; it is not a court judgment and does not decide every underlying ownership dispute.
If you are the game owner or publisher
You may file for footage, game assets, trailers, music, artwork, dialogue, or other material in which your company owns the relevant rights. Confirm that the particular asset was not licensed from somebody else in a way that limits your authority. For example, a soundtrack may involve a separate composer, label, or performance license.

If you are an employee, lawyer, or contractor
Obtain written authorization before filing for another rights holder. Keep that authorization with the case record. Twitch and Valve both require the filer to be the rights holder or a legally authorized agent. A job title alone does not prove authority to make a legal representation.
If you are a viewer, journalist, or community moderator
You normally cannot submit a DMCA notice for somebody else’s game or footage without authorization. Preserve the evidence, use the platform’s ordinary infringement or abuse-reporting option where appropriate, and send the information privately to the publisher or rights owner. Do not re-upload the leak or spread direct links while trying to report it.
Preserve evidence without amplifying the leak
Capture enough information for a host to locate the material and for the rights holder to show what appeared. Work from the original page rather than relying on a search result that may change.

- Note visible timestamps and describe which portions contain the game, trailer, soundtrack, cutscene, artwork, or other protected work.
- Save screenshots showing the page, account, title, and relevant frames. Where lawful and safe, keep a local evidence copy or a cryptographic hash instead of redistributing the file.
- Record later changes, such as a title edit, deleted page, re-upload, or mirror. Keep an internal discovery log with dates and time zones.
- Do not quote, embed, or link to the leaked footage in public posts. Publicly repeating the material can increase its reach and make it harder to contain.
Preserve the URL exactly as displayed, including query strings that identify a video or clip. If the page is available only to logged-in users, record the accessible URL and explain the access condition in your notice.
Check authorization and lawful-use issues first
A leak may look unauthorized without proving that every use is infringing. Before you sign a legal notice, check the publisher’s gameplay or fan-content policy, press or review permissions, music and third-party-asset licenses, and any contract governing the footage.
Commentary, criticism, news reporting, or other lawful uses can affect the analysis. That does not mean a platform must accept an uploader’s defense, but it does mean the claimant needs a good-faith basis for asserting that the specific use is unauthorized. The U.S. Copyright Office describes a notice as a request concerning material used without authorization and requires a good-faith statement.

Choose the correct reporting route
Use the host’s official copyright process for each copy. Ordinary community flags and a legal notice are different routes, with different eligibility and information requirements.

These routes are independent. Filing with a publisher does not automatically remove a host copy, and filing with one host does not remove copies elsewhere.
File with the platform hosting the copy
YouTube
Use YouTube’s copyright removal-request process, not only the general community-report menu. Identify the video URL and the original work, then provide the required contact, authority, good-faith, accuracy, and signature information. YouTube treats the request as a legal process.
Consider the privacy consequence before submitting. YouTube says the claimant’s name may appear in place of a removed video’s listing and that the claimant’s full legal name may be shared with the uploader. A company may therefore want an authorized representative, legal department, or service address that is appropriate for disclosure. Do not provide a false identity or someone else’s contact information.
Twitch
Submit Twitch’s copyright-claims web form when a live stream, VOD, or clip uses protected material without authorization. Twitch asks for today’s date, the type of material, a direct URL, identification of the copyrighted work, contact information, the required good-faith and accuracy/perjury statements, and a signature.

- For a live stream, provide the channel URL.
- For recorded material, provide the direct VOD or clip URL rather than only the creator’s profile.
- Describe the protected work and where it appears, using timestamps when they make the material easy to locate.
Twitch also lists email, mail, and telephone alternatives for its designated copyright agent. Use the current contact method shown in Twitch’s copyright information if the web form is unavailable.

Steam and Valve
Use Valve’s Notice of Copyright Infringement form for an infringing Steam page or upload. The form asks for the Steam URL, a description of the specific material, details and location of the original work, full legal contact information, confirmation that you own the work or are authorized to act, the good-faith statement, the accuracy statement under penalty of perjury, and a signature.
Valve warns that submitting a copyright claim is a serious legal matter and that knowingly material misrepresentation may create liability under section 512(f). Check every URL and ownership statement before sending. If the page contains several distinct works, identify each one rather than making a vague assertion about the entire page.
Other video, social, file-hosting, and mirror services
Open the service’s help, legal, or terms pages and search for “copyright,” “DMCA,” or “designated agent.” Use the service’s own form or designated-agent address. A profile URL alone may not identify a particular upload, so include the direct post, video, clip, or file URL whenever one exists.
Some hosts accept ordinary reports from viewers, while their legal process is restricted to owners and agents. Follow the service’s distinction. If a mirror disappears before you can capture it, retain the original URL, screenshots, account name, and discovery time and explain that the page changed.
What a complete copyright notice contains
Prepare one accurate notice for each host. The following checklist reflects the U.S. Copyright Office’s section 512 guidance and the information requested by Twitch and Valve.
- Claimant identity: Give your legal name and reliable contact details, including an email address and a physical or service address where the host can reach you.
- Authority: State that you own the copyrighted work or are authorized to act for the owner. Identify the owner when the claimant is an agent.
- Infringing location: List every direct URL covered by that submission, with the platform, account name, title, and relevant timestamps.
- Original work: Identify the game, footage, soundtrack, trailer, artwork, or other work. Add an original-work URL or other details that let the host verify it.
- Specificity: Explain what appears in the upload and where it appears. A host should be able to locate the material without guessing.
- Good-faith statement: State that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, the owner’s agent, or the law.
- Accuracy and authority statement: Confirm that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act for the owner.
- Signature: Add a physical or electronic signature and the date.
Use the platform’s wording where it supplies a form, but do not copy a statement that does not fit the facts. If you later learn that a use is authorized, tell the host and stop submitting repeated claims for that material.

Notify the game publisher in parallel
For a commercial-game leak, send the URL and evidence to the publisher’s official piracy or intellectual-property channel as well as the host. The publisher may know which assets are confidential, may be able to identify an internal source, and may have enforcement options that a platform form does not provide.

Nintendo’s support information directs ROM-site and piracy reports to its piracy-report address and separately explains its intellectual-property notification route. Use the channel that matches the issue and include the exact page, account, dates, and evidence.
Konami
Konami’s reporting form includes illegal uploading or piracy and covers potentially infringing videos, social posts, songs, and still images. Describe the work and location precisely, especially when the same leak appears in several formats.

A takedown on one service is not internet-wide. The IGDA’s guidance explains that rights holders generally must repeat the process on each site and sometimes for later copies on the same site.
Keep a spreadsheet or case log with these fields:
- Original discovery time and the person who found it.
- Platform, account or channel, direct URL, title, upload date, and evidence location.
- Date and method of each notice, confirmation number, and the representative or agent contacted.
- Platform response, removal or disabling date, and any request for clarification.
- Mirror URLs, re-uploads, hashes, and links between related accounts.
Check for copies again after a removal. Treat each new URL as a separate host or case unless the service explicitly allows you to add material to an existing notice.
Counter-notices and escalation
A valid notice can lead to removal or disabled access, but the uploader may dispute it through the platform’s counter-notification process. Read the platform’s response carefully and preserve the communication. A counter-notice can create deadlines or require you to consider whether to pursue a court order, so obtain legal advice when the dispute is significant.

Consult an intellectual-property lawyer before escalating when ownership is divided among a publisher, studio, composer, or contractor; the leak causes substantial commercial harm; the uploader is in another country; or the material may involve commentary, criticism, news reporting, or another contested lawful use. Do not threaten the uploader, impersonate a rights holder, or submit a notice after learning that the use is authorized.
Practical scenarios
A viewer finds a leaked cutscene on YouTube
Save the video URL, channel name, title, timestamps, screenshots, and discovery time. Send that package privately to the publisher or rights owner. If you are not authorized, use YouTube’s ordinary reporting tools rather than signing a DMCA declaration.
A publisher finds the same footage on YouTube, Twitch, and a mirror
Prepare separate submissions for each host. Use YouTube’s copyright process, Twitch’s claims form with the correct live or recorded URL, and the mirror’s designated-agent process. Send the publisher’s internal piracy report in parallel and log every confirmation.

A licensed streamer posts footage that looks like a leak
Check the press, review, creator, and gameplay permissions before filing. If the license covers the footage, do not claim that use is unauthorized. If only part of the upload exceeds the permission, identify that specific material and explain the limitation accurately.
The original page disappears before the notice is filed
Retain screenshots, the exact URL, account information, timestamps, and any lawful local evidence or hash. Report the page if it reappears, and include the historical details so the host can connect a re-upload to the earlier copy.
Bottom line
Report leaked game footage through the official copyright process of every service hosting it, but only when you are the owner or an authorized agent with a good-faith basis. Preserve precise evidence, identify both the infringing upload and the original work, sign the required accuracy and authority statements, account for possible identity disclosure, notify the publisher separately, and track mirrors and counter-notices until each copy has a documented outcome.
