How do I report someone in a Discord server?
Use message reporting for a specific post, DM, or other message that appears to violate Discord’s rules. Discord’s Safety Center describes these steps in its reporting instructions (published February 16, 2024; editor’s note says updated January 22, 2026).

- Find the message you want to report.
- On desktop, right-click the message. On mobile, press and hold it.
- Select Report Message.
- Choose the policy violation that most closely describes the conduct. On the next screen, select a more specific category if available. Discord says you can go back and change your first answer if another category is a better fit.
Describe the conduct accurately. Don’t guess at someone’s motive, exaggerate, or choose a category that does not fit just to make a report seem more serious.

What should I report as spam, harassment, or a scam?
Discord’s Community Guidelines apply across its platform, including messages, behavior, servers, and apps. The version reviewed is effective September 29, 2025, and lists August 29, 2025 as its last-updated date. It prohibits harassment, unsolicited bulk messages (spam), phishing, financial scams, threats, and sharing someone’s personal information without consent.

Report the specific behavior that fits the rules. For example, use the closest relevant option for an unsolicited bulk message, a phishing attempt, or a financial scam. A message being irritating or unwelcome is not by itself proof of a policy violation; report it only when the content or conduct fits a rule.
Should I tell the server mods too?
Yes, if you want the server’s moderators to know about an incident. Discord says moderators may be able to respond immediately within their community. A report through Discord’s in-app process separately alerts the platform to a suspected policy violation. One route does not replace the other, and neither guarantees a particular outcome.

When contacting moderators, point them to the relevant message and explain briefly what happened. Keep the platform report focused on the conduct rather than coordinating with others to report it.

- Open the user’s profile.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Select Report User Profile.
- Select the profile elements you are reporting; Discord allows more than one aspect to be selected.
- Identify the policy violation that best fits.
For a problematic message, use Report Message instead.
Do I need a message link to report it?
Not for every ordinary in-app report. Discord’s Safety Center describes the in-app message-reporting steps without requiring the reporter to copy a message URL.

There is a separate process for reports under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA). For a DSA message report, Discord requires the message URL. On desktop, right-click the message or open its ellipsis menu and choose Copy Message Link. On mobile, press and hold the message, then choose Copy Message Link. The DSA process also includes verification and report details.
How can I limit further contact?
Ignore or block the user
Discord’s Ignore feature can hide a user’s messages and notifications in DMs, group chats, and servers. You can still reveal hidden messages, and Discord says ignored users cannot visually detect that they have been ignored. Discord also offers blocking, which is a separate control for limiting interaction more fully. You can choose either option based on how much contact you want to restrict; Ignore is also available after submitting a report.

Adjust the DM spam filter
To reduce suspected spam reaching your direct messages, open User Settings > Content & Social. Discord’s Safer Messaging on Discord help article, updated September 2, 2025, documents three choices: filter messages from non-friends (the stated default), filter all DMs, or do not filter DMs. This is a DM prevention setting, not a replacement for reporting a message that violates Discord’s rules.
For server owners: explicit-image filtering
Server owners can find Discord’s explicit-image filter at Server Settings > Moderation > Safety Setup. It can block messages that may contain explicit images in channels not marked age-restricted and can be set to apply to all members or only members without assigned roles. It is not a general spam or scam filter.
What should I avoid when reporting?
- Do not submit false or malicious reports, mislead Discord’s support teams, or report something solely because it annoys you.
- Do not send duplicate reports about the same issue or coordinate a group to report the same content.
- Do not assume that a report guarantees enforcement or a response by a particular deadline.
Discord explicitly says, “It is against our policies to mislead Discord’s support teams.” Keep your report concise, accurate, and focused on the conduct.
What if someone may be in immediate danger?
Discord says to contact local law enforcement if there is a credible threat of violence and someone is in immediate danger, or if someone is considering self-harm and faces immediate danger. In the United States, its Safety Center lists Crisis Text Line: text DISCORD to 741741. For other regions, Discord points to ThroughLine Care to find free, confidential chat, text, or phone support in your country. These urgent real-world steps are separate from reporting content on Discord.
What happens after an EU DSA report?
For DSA reports, Discord says it sends a system DM or email confirming receipt and uses automated and human review. Discord gives review targets of 24–48 hours for high-harm reports, such as child safety, extremism, or imminent harm, and within a week for lower-harm examples such as harassment, hate speech, or cybercrime misinformation. Complex investigations may take days to weeks. These are DSA-specific targets, not guarantees; Discord says timing can change with process changes, volume surges, technical problems, and backlogs. They should not be assumed to apply to ordinary in-app reporting.
