You can run OBS on a Linux VPS and stream to YouTube Live, but first verify that the specific OVHcloud plan can provide OBS’s Linux graphics and display requirements and sustain your chosen encoding workload. OBS requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X Window System or Wayland; a minimal headless VPS should not be assumed to meet those needs. A Hindi channel uses the same YouTube encoder setup as any other channel: choose settings for your content, server capacity and viewers’ connections.
Can you run OBS on an OVHcloud VPS?
Potentially—but compatibility depends on the exact plan and configuration. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix. Meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee adequate performance at a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder setting or scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements before choosing a server.
Before buying or configuring an OVHcloud VPS, verify the plan, region and Linux image directly with OVHcloud. Confirm that the graphics capability, display arrangement and sustained outbound network capacity will support OBS and your intended stream. Current plan-level graphics support and performance are not established here, so do not assume an ordinary headless VPS is suitable. An interactive OBS interface may also require remote desktop access or a virtual display arrangement; the right approach depends on the selected plan and is not one-size-fits-all.
- Graphics and display: Can the environment provide OBS’s required OpenGL support and an X11 or Wayland session?
- Encoding workload: Can the available CPU or encoder sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, scene and codec?
- Network: Can outbound bandwidth carry the stream continuously with headroom?
- Region and image: Does the location suit your production needs, and does the Linux image match OBS’s installation instructions?
Install OBS on the VPS’s Linux distribution
Use the current OBS Linux installation guide for the distribution and release actually installed on your server. OBS documents a PPA and apt installation route for Ubuntu; package instructions can vary by Ubuntu release and change over time. The current download page specifies the official PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer, so check the guide rather than copying commands intended for a different release. For other distributions, follow the corresponding instructions in the OBS guide.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Installing OBS does not by itself solve the VPS’s graphics, display-session or performance requirements. Nor does the existence of Linux installation instructions establish that OBS has been tested on your particular OVHcloud image or plan.
Build a scene and make sure its sources reach the VPS
- Start OBS and use the Auto-Configuration Wizard. It can help adapt output settings to the hardware and network it detects, but it does not verify OVHcloud plan capabilities.
- Create a scene for the programme. Add only the sources you need. OBS supports sources such as display or window capture and video capture devices, including webcams and capture cards; available options depend on the running Linux session.
- Check every source in the preview. A VPS can encode only sources available to its OBS session. A camera or microphone connected to your home computer will not automatically appear on the remote server; you need a way to deliver that feed to the VPS or use sources already accessible there.
- Check audio before streaming. Confirm that the intended audio source is selected and the OBS mixer meters respond. For speech-led Hindi programming, prioritize intelligible voice and test with representative speech, music and movement from the actual show. This is a production recommendation, not a Hindi-specific YouTube preset.
If your workflow needs an HDMI camera or another physical video source, a capture card is an optional way to bring it into OBS when the card is connected to a compatible machine. OBS lists capture cards among video capture sources, but no particular model’s compatibility is established here. A card is not necessary when the VPS receives an already available media or network source.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and its getting-started page says streamers must be at least 16. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before scheduling your first broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, and its RTMPS instructions explain that it carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. When configuring encrypted ingestion, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the server URL and stream key. If the service offers a server selection, use the matching RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: YouTube uses it to identify where the feed should go and accept the incoming stream.
- Set encoder output for the actual workload. Use YouTube’s current table for your codec, resolution and frame rate, then confirm the VPS can sustain it. Do not apply one bitrate to every stream. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps recommended (5 Mbps minimum in its table) for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps recommended for 720p30. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular OVHcloud VPS can encode or deliver them reliably.
- Configure audio and colour appropriately. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced settings recommend stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table for the chosen output rather than treating these examples as a complete configuration for every codec or stream.
Test the stream and watch its health
- Run a short private or unlisted test using the real scene, sources, movement and sound. Check OBS’s preview and audio meters, then check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Inspect stream health and delivery. Look for dropped frames, unstable delivery, warnings or unintelligible audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; the OBS Quick Start Guide also encourages a short test before a first stream.
- Leave network headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping about 20% of upload bandwidth free beyond the total stream bitrate. Apply this to the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, not just a brief peak-speed reading.
- Adjust and repeat. If the test shows encoding or delivery problems, lower the workload—such as resolution, frame rate or bitrate—and test again. A successful preview is useful evidence for that configuration, not a guarantee across different scenes or future server loads.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- OBS will not open, or capture is blank: Check that the VPS has the required OpenGL support and that OBS is running in an available X11 or Wayland session. A minimal headless setup may not provide either a usable display session or compatible graphics. Verify the selected plan’s capabilities before trying display workarounds.
- The scene is empty or the camera and microphone are missing: Check that the source is accessible to the remote OBS session and selected in the scene or audio settings. Local devices attached to another computer do not automatically become VPS devices; arrange a feed to the server or use sources it can access.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the server URL and stream key in OBS against the selected stream in Live Control Room. Confirm that the stream key has not been mistyped or exposed, and use the displayed RTMPS URL when configuring encrypted ingestion.
- The stream drops frames or looks unstable: Check both encoding load and sustained outbound capacity. Reduce output demands if the VPS cannot sustain them, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- The video or audio does not match the intended output: Compare codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio settings with YouTube’s current encoder table. Test the actual programme sources, not only a static scene.
- The account cannot start a live stream: Review YouTube’s verification, age and recent-restriction eligibility rules before debugging OBS; an encoder configuration cannot resolve a channel eligibility restriction.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous Hindi YouTube channel rather than a remote OBS workstation, StreamNeo is a different route: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
