Explain that the game is closing and the virtual goods or access you bought can no longer be used. A shutdown can support your explanation, but Apple and Google do not promise an automatic refund solely because a game closes.
First find out who billed the purchase
The game itself may have displayed the purchase screen, but the billing record belongs to a separate platform. Your receipt identifies the correct route. Look for the sender, order format, account name, or payment descriptor on the receipt or bank statement.

Do not report a purchase as unauthorized unless someone actually used your account without permission. A legitimate purchase that became unusable is a different issue and should be described that way.
Requesting an Apple refund
Apple’s documented self-service route is the refund portal. Complete the request while signed in to the Apple Account that paid for the item.

- Open reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in.
- Open the “I’d like to” menu and choose “Request a refund.”
- Select the reason that most accurately describes the situation. Depending on the transaction and region, Apple presents categories such as a fulfillment problem, dissatisfaction, a legal reason or another reason.
- Select the mobile game purchase, then submit the request. In the explanation, state the game’s announced closure date or the date access ended and identify what you bought.
- Save the confirmation and any case reference. Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update after submitting. If approved, the money can take additional time to return to the original payment method.
If the Apple purchase is not listed
- Check other Apple Accounts that may have been signed in when the purchase was made. A family member’s account or an older account can hold the transaction.
- Compare the receipt’s date, amount and item name with the game’s store history. A subscription renewal may appear separately from a one-time currency purchase.
- If the transaction still cannot be found or the portal will not accept the request, contact Apple Support and provide the receipt or transaction information.
What Apple should receive
Choose the closest truthful reason rather than trying to force a shutdown into an unrelated category. A concise explanation can say that the game service is ending and the purchased gems, pass, coins or other content can no longer be accessed. Attach the purchase record and, if available, a screenshot of the closure notice or an error shown when you try to use the item.
Requesting a Google Play refund
Start Google Play’s refund request flow while signed in to the Google account used for billing. Google’s published guidance separates requests by the time since purchase.
Purchases made within 48 hours
For an app, game or in-app purchase made within 48 hours, Google says: Within 48 hours: You may be able to get a refund depending on the details of the purchase.
Submit the request through Google Play, select the transaction and explain that the game is closing or has closed and that the purchased content cannot be used.
Purchases older than 48 hours
After 48 hours, Google says: After 48 hours: Contact the developer to troubleshoot and find out if you can get a refund.
Use the game’s listed support contact, the support address in the receipt, or the contact method provided in the closure announcement. The developer can apply its own refund policy and must also follow applicable law.

Include the order number exactly as shown on the receipt. Also provide the purchase date, item name, amount and currency, the email address associated with the Google account, the date the game will close or did close, and a short description of what is no longer available. Google notes that outcomes can differ according to what was bought, when and how it was paid, and where the user is located.
If the game has already disappeared
Removal from the store does not erase the billing record. Search the purchasing account’s email for the receipt and use that order number in the request. If you cannot open the game to capture an in-game screen, use the developer’s shutdown announcement, a service-termination notice or an account page showing the loss of access instead.
When the developer billed you directly
Some games use a web checkout, a direct card charge or another payment processor rather than an Apple or Google transaction. In that case, a store refund form cannot reverse the charge. Reply to the payment confirmation or use the developer’s official support route, and ask for a review under its refund terms and applicable consumer law.

State the same facts used for a store request: what was purchased, the transaction date and ID, the amount and currency, the account, the closure announcement and why the content is unusable. Keep the request tied to the original transaction; opening a payment dispute while a normal refund review is active can complicate the case. If a direct-payment provider supplied a separate support process, follow that provider’s instructions and retain all correspondence.

Collect evidence before submitting
Refund reviewers need to match your explanation to a specific charge. Gather the following before starting the form or email:
- Store receipt, invoice or payment confirmation.
- Order or transaction ID, copied exactly.
- Purchase date, amount, currency and item name.
- Apple Account or Google account email used for billing.
- The game’s closure announcement, service-termination date or notice that access has ended.
- Screenshots showing unavailable content, a closed service, a disabled login or an error message, when available.
- Any developer support ticket, reply and promised resolution.
Keep the originals until the case is closed. Redact unrelated payment details when sending screenshots, but leave the transaction ID, date and amount readable.
Use a factual refund explanation
A clear request connects four facts: the transaction, the item, the closure and the resulting loss of use. You can adapt this wording:

Replace every bracketed field with the actual information. If only part of a bundle became unusable, identify that part rather than claiming that every purchase was affected. If you received a promised item but it later became inaccessible because the service ended, say so; do not describe it as an unauthorized charge or as “never received” unless that is true.

The game has announced a future shutdown
Submit the request as soon as the loss of use is clear, especially for a recent Google Play purchase that is still within the 48-hour window. Cite the announced end date and ask whether the platform or developer will review the transaction before service termination. Do not wait until the game is removed if the support channel is already available.
The shutdown date has passed
Use the same billing route, but explain that access has already ended. Include a dated closure notice or a screenshot of the failed login. If Google’s purchase is older than 48 hours, contact the developer as Google directs. For Apple, submit through the portal and contact Apple Support if the transaction cannot be selected.
You bought several items over time
List each relevant transaction separately. Grouping dates and order numbers in a short table or bullet list helps the reviewer distinguish a subscription renewal from a currency pack. Do not assume approval for one charge guarantees approval for every other charge.

Track the request and handle a rejection
Save the submission confirmation, the date sent and every reply. Apple says an update can take 24 to 48 hours, followed by additional time for an approved refund to reach the payment method. Google’s path may involve the store first and the developer afterward, so keep both case numbers.
If a request is rejected, read the stated reason before submitting anything again. Check that you used the account that paid, selected the correct transaction and supplied the closure evidence. A follow-up should add missing facts or explain a genuine mistake, not repeat an identical request. Ask the developer to identify the policy or legal basis for its decision when the store has directed you there. Keep communication professional and chronological.
Regional consumer-law protections
Platform policies are not a complete statement of your legal rights. Apple says refund eligibility can vary by country or region and that consumers retain rights under applicable law. Google likewise says its policies differ according to the purchase, payment method, timing and user location.

People in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and other jurisdictions may have protections that affect digital-content refunds, service failures or misleading terms. Check the rules that apply where you bought the content. Describe the facts accurately and ask the seller or platform to assess the request under both its policy and any applicable consumer protection; do not assert a legal entitlement unless you know it applies to your transaction.
Common mistakes that weaken a request
- Using the wrong channel: A store cannot normally refund a charge made through a developer’s web checkout, and a developer cannot change a store’s billing record.
- Missing the Google timing window: The first 48 hours matter because Google’s self-service guidance specifically addresses that period. Older requests normally move to the developer.
- Leaving out the order number: Without an exact transaction ID, support may be unable to match the claim to a charge.
- Overstating the loss: Do not claim that an item was never delivered, that the charge was fraudulent or that every purchase is unusable when the evidence shows otherwise.
- Sending vague shutdown claims: Include the announcement or service date and explain the practical loss of access.
- Discarding records: Keep receipts, screenshots and replies until the refund or final decision is complete.
A practical decision checklist
- Find the receipt and identify the actual biller.
- Record the transaction ID, purchase date, item, amount and currency.
- Save the closure announcement or proof that the service is inaccessible.
- Use Apple’s refund portal for an Apple-billed purchase.
- Use Google Play’s refund flow for a recent Google-billed purchase; if it is older than 48 hours, contact the developer.
- Use the developer or payment processor’s support route for a direct charge.
- Write a short, accurate explanation and attach only relevant evidence.
- Record the submission date, case number and response deadline.
- Follow up with missing facts or a policy question rather than duplicating the same request.
Approval remains case-specific. The strongest request is one that reaches the correct biller, identifies a real transaction and clearly documents why the game’s closure removed the ability to use what was purchased.
