Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not judge a rare game by its highest asking price or a single price-guide number. First identify the exact release and condition, then compare several recent sold transactions for the same regional edition. Add shipping, tax, import charges and any buyer fees to calculate your real cost. If matching sales are scarce, label the estimate as uncertain rather than treating an old or incomparable sale as the market price.
What a recent-sales check can—and cannot—tell you
A completed transaction answers a specific question: what one buyer paid for one copy, in one condition, at one time and in one marketplace. A group of comparable transactions can indicate a market range. Neither result proves that every copy of the game has the same value, and neither establishes authenticity by itself.

Price guides are useful for organizing history, but they are summaries rather than appraisals of the copy in front of you. PriceCharting says it tracks video-game sales from eBay and its own marketplace and separates prices by item condition. Its stated coverage includes more than 45,000 games, consoles and accessories, with daily updates and support for NTSC, PAL and Japan releases. Those are the service’s reported capabilities, not an independent audit. See its FAQ and About page for the categories and coverage it describes.
Use a guide to find candidate sales and to spot broad trends. Open the underlying listings before deciding whether a seller’s price is supported.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Step 1: Identify the exact release before searching
Most bad comparisons fail before the first search. Write a full identification line for the item you are considering:
- Title as printed on the box, cartridge or disc.
- Platform and hardware revision where relevant.
- Region: NTSC-U, NTSC-J, PAL or another clearly identified market.
- Edition, publisher, bundle, rental version, promotional release or special packaging.
- Label, catalog number, barcode, disc code, cartridge revision and language markings.
- Whether the item is an original release, a later reprint or a reproduction.
Region is not a cosmetic detail. Different regional releases can have different print runs, contents, languages, censorship, packaging and collector demand. PriceCharting states that it supports NTSC, PAL and Japan releases; that does not mean a PAL result is interchangeable with an NTSC result. Keep the region identical unless you explicitly mark another region as a weak proxy.
Record distinguishing details from the listing
Save the listing title, photographs, seller description and item number while the sale is still accessible. Note label variants, factory seals, inserts, registration cards, manuals, promotional materials and damage. A listing that says only “rare game” is not enough evidence of a match.
Step 2: Classify the copy’s condition precisely
Condition categories represent different products. PriceCharting distinguishes loose copies, complete-in-box copies, new or sealed copies, graded copies, box-only items and manual-only items in its FAQ. Do not combine those categories into one average.
| Condition to match | What to verify | Common comparison error |
|---|---|---|
| Loose | Original cartridge or disc, readable label, correct region and any included accessories | Using a complete-in-box or sealed sale to price a bare cartridge |
| Complete in box | Original box, manual and all expected inserts; condition of each component | Calling a box-and-cartridge bundle complete when the manual is missing |
| New or sealed | Seal type, intact seams, correct edition and evidence that the seal is original | Treating resealed or opened-and-rewrapped packaging as factory sealed |
| Graded | Grading company, grade, label accuracy and whether the grade includes the box and contents | Comparing a graded premium with an ungraded copy without disclosure |
| Box only | Correct regional box, artwork variant and structural condition | Including box-only sales in complete-copy statistics |
| Manual only | Correct language, edition and physical condition | Counting a manual as evidence for the value of a playable copy |
Use conservative descriptions. “Near mint” is not a standardized measurement across sellers, so photographs and an itemized contents list matter more than the adjective. A cracked case, sun-faded artwork, torn seal, writing, water damage or disc resurfacing can move a copy into a different practical comparison group.

Step 3: Find completed sales for the exact match
Marketplace search
On a marketplace with completed-sale filters, search the exact title, platform and regional identifier. Filter for sold or completed listings rather than active asking prices. Open each result and reject listings that are lots, bundles, accessories, reproductions, damaged items or misidentified variants.
For every accepted sale, record:
- Sale date and currency.
- Sale price and visible shipping charge.
- Taxes, import charges or buyer fees shown to the purchaser, when applicable.
- Loose, complete, sealed, graded, box-only or manual-only status.
- Region, edition and catalog or label details.
- Whether the transaction was a single copy, a multi-item lot or a bundle.
- Photographic evidence of contents and condition.
Active listings show what sellers hope to receive. They are useful for understanding competition, not for proving what buyers actually paid.

Price-history services
PriceCharting’s methodology page says its process collects sold listings from eBay and its own video-game marketplace and considers the most recent sale, median, average, age-weighted average, sale date and outliers. It also says abnormally high or low listings are flagged for review. Because that methodology is proprietary and vendor-reported, treat the displayed figure as a benchmark and verify the individual transactions for a rare purchase.
Do not misapply an unrelated guide
The eBay UK Price Guide page describes estimated guidance from completed marketplace sales, up to two years of history and data updates every 24 hours. The cited page is for trading-card games, states availability in the UK and US, and does not establish a video-game valuation tool. Do not transfer its trading-card coverage or statistics to video games.
Step 4: Build a comparable-sales sheet
A small table prevents memory and excitement from turning unlike items into an apparent trend. Use one row per transaction and keep rejected results in a separate notes area so you remember why they were excluded.

| Field | Entry to make | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Title, platform, region, edition and catalog or label code | Prevents regional and variant mixing |
| Condition | Loose, complete, sealed, graded, box only or manual only | Defines the product being priced |
| Sale details | Date, currency, final price and shipping | Shows when and where the result occurred |
| Transaction type | Single copy, lot, bundle or auction format | Lot prices cannot be averaged as single-copy prices |
| Evidence | Photos, contents, defects and seller description | Tests whether the listing really matches |
| Adjustment notes | Tax, import charge, buyer fee, unusual demand or obvious error | Separates seller proceeds from your all-in cost |
Three well-matched sales are more informative than ten loosely related results. When you have enough observations, look at the middle of the group and the spread, not only the highest or lowest number. A median can resist one exceptional sale better than a simple average, but no statistic repairs bad matching.
Step 5: Interpret guide estimates and outliers
PriceCharting says its algorithm weighs several summaries and sale dates, including the most recent sale, median, average, age-weighted average and outliers. Those calculations answer a different question from “What should I pay for this particular copy today?” A guide may combine transactions across a period, while your purchase has one condition, one region and one seller.
When a high result is credible
Keep a high sale in the sample when its identity, condition and transaction terms match and the photographs support the description. A sealed or professionally graded copy can legitimately command more than an ordinary complete copy. Do not remove a high result merely because it raises the estimate.
When a result is an outlier or non-comparable
- The listing is a lot whose per-item value cannot be established.
- The title misidentifies the region, edition or platform.
- The item is damaged, incomplete or a reproduction.
- Shipping or fees explain a substantial difference from the displayed price.
- The sale appears to be an exceptional event with no matching condition evidence.
Document the reason for exclusion instead of silently deleting inconvenient observations. If the listing is ambiguous, place it in a low-confidence group rather than treating it as proof.
Step 6: Handle thin or old sales data
Rare games often have few transactions. Widen the date range gradually and state the exact window you used. An isolated sale from years ago is historical evidence, not automatically a current market price. If you use it, label the age and explain why it is still the closest match.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A weaker proxy can be useful only when labeled: for example, the same title in another region, or the same edition in a neighboring condition category. Do not present that proxy as an exact comparable. The farther the match moves from the target copy, the wider and less certain your estimate should become.
Do not infer rarity from a high asking price or from a thin sales record. Scarcity, buyer demand, condition and seller exposure can all affect the number of observed transactions. A lack of sales means uncertainty, not proof that the game is worth more.

Compare your total outlay with the comparable sale totals, not just the headline item price:
All-in cost = item price + shipping + sales tax or VAT + import charges + buyer-side platform fees.

For a domestic comparison, shipping may be visible in the completed listing. For an international purchase, customs or VAT may be calculated only at checkout. A seller’s displayed sale price and your final landed cost can therefore differ even when the copy is identical.
Step 8: Separate valuation from authenticity
Sold-price history cannot authenticate a cartridge, disc, box or seal. Counterfeits can appear in completed sales, and an expensive transaction can still involve a fake or misidentified item. Check board or disc markings, print quality, screw types, label texture, case molding, serial consistency and provenance using specialist authentication guidance appropriate to the platform. Treat authenticity as a separate decision gate before relying on a price comparison.
Compare two listings on the same axes
When deciding between copies, compare each listing side by side rather than ranking them by price alone.

| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Identity | Are title, platform, edition, region and label or catalog details identical? |
| Completeness | Are the same box, manual, inserts and accessories included? |
| Physical condition | Are there cracks, fading, tears, writing, corrosion, resurfacing or water damage? |
| Sealed or graded status | Is the seal original, and are grading company and grade comparable? |
| Date and market | How recent is the sale, and was it in the same currency and geography? |
| Transaction format | Was it a single-copy sale, auction, fixed-price sale, lot or bundle? |
| All-in cost | What did the buyer pay after shipping, tax, import charges and fees? |
| Sample strength | How many close matches exist, and how widely do their prices spread? |
| Guide versus transaction | Are you looking at an aggregate estimate or an individual completed sale? |
A practical decision rule before you pay
- Write the target copy’s exact identity and condition.
- Collect several sold listings that match those fields.
- Remove or separately label lots, reproductions, damaged copies and mismatched regions.
- Record dates, prices, shipping and visible buyer charges.
- Review the median or central range only after checking the listing evidence.
- Widen the date range or use a labeled proxy if close matches are too few.
- Calculate your checkout total in the same currency as the comparisons.
- Set a maximum price that reflects uncertainty, condition risk and authentication risk.
Walk away when the seller’s copy cannot be matched to the evidence, when the only support is an active asking price, or when the transaction history is too thin to distinguish a normal result from an outlier. A lower price does not compensate for an unverifiable variant or questionable authenticity.
Keeping the record useful over time
Save the date you checked, the search terms, the filters, the currency and the URLs of accepted sales. Prices change with demand and availability, so a conclusion should always carry its date window and market. Recheck the set when a new sale appears rather than replacing the entire history with the latest headline number.
A physical price-guide book can provide collecting context, but edition freshness and current availability are not established here. For a purchase decision, current matched sold listings are more directly relevant than an undated printed figure. A bibliography of video-game books is available from Wikipedia’s list of books about video games, but it is not a substitute for transaction evidence.
Evidence limits to keep in mind
No universal, authoritative database covers every rare game and every regional variant. PriceCharting’s methodology is proprietary, and its coverage and statistics are its own descriptions. A University of Minnesota repository record identifies a 2025 paper titled High score or game over? The financial returns of retro video games on the secondhand market and says it uses monthly eBay sales-price data dating back to 2008; the record alone does not establish the paper’s findings, sample statistics or conclusions. Read the paper itself before using any of those details: University of Minnesota repository record.
