To reset the Xbox app on a Windows PC, open Settings, find Xbox in the installed-app list, open Advanced options, and select Reset. If you are troubleshooting the app, try Repair first when it is available. Resetting the Xbox app is not the same as deleting a particular game’s save or restarting that game’s progress.
Reset the Xbox app in Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Close the Xbox app.
- Open Settings.
- Go to the installed-app list for your Windows version:
- Windows 11: Apps > Installed apps.
- Windows 10: Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Xbox and open its Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair first if you are trying to fix a problem and the option is available. Microsoft describes Repair as fixing app issues without losing app data.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not fix the issue, select Reset. Microsoft says this returns the app to its default state and may remove app data.
The labels and controls can vary by Windows version and app support. Microsoft notes that Advanced options, Repair, and Reset are not available for every app. See Microsoft’s Windows app repair and reset instructions.
What Reset does—and what it does not establish
Reset is an app-level action. Microsoft’s guidance says it restores the app’s default state and may remove app data, but it does not specify exactly which Xbox app data is removed. It does not establish that resetting Xbox deletes a specific game’s save, erases that game’s progress, or changes a cloud-synced save.
Repair is the lower-risk first step for troubleshooting: Microsoft says it is intended to fix app issues without losing app data. Reset carries a data-removal caveat, so use it only when Repair is unavailable or has not helped and you are comfortable with that possibility. If you want to restart one game
Do not use Xbox app Reset as a substitute for clearing an individual game’s save. The steps for restarting a game vary, and the general Microsoft instructions do not explain how a particular game handles local and cloud saves.
- Identify the exact game and check its official support instructions for resetting or deleting its save.
- Before removing save files, confirm what the game’s instructions say about local saves and cloud synchronization. The Xbox app reset guidance does not establish what will happen to either.
Microsoft’s broader Microsoft Store app troubleshooting steps include closing and reopening the app, checking for Windows and Store updates, using Repair or Reset, and reinstalling when appropriate. Those are app-troubleshooting suggestions, not a guarantee that an individual game-save issue will be fixed.

When Gaming Services troubleshooting applies
Microsoft’s Gaming Services removal-and-reinstall workaround is specifically documented for Windows 10 errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F when installing or starting games. The cited article is dated 2021; it is not general-purpose advice for resetting game data. Use it only if your situation matches the documented errors, and follow the steps in Microsoft’s KB5004327 article.
