What actually resets an Uptime Kuma password
Uptime Kuma includes an administrative command-line utility for changing an account password. The supported command is exposed through the npm script named reset-password. It asks which username to update and then prompts for the new password and its confirmation.

This is a recovery operation, not a search for a universal default password. Uptime Kuma does not require you to edit the SQLite database by hand, and manually changing database rows can leave password data in an unusable state. Use the utility that ships with the same Uptime Kuma installation and data directory as the account you need to recover.
Choose the procedure for your installation

The end result is the same: the account record is updated by Uptime Kuma’s own code. The difference is where you invoke the command and which obstacle you are trying to remove.

Before you run the reset
Prepare the correct installation before opening the utility. Most failed resets are caused by running the command against a different container, directory, or data volume than the one serving the login page.
- Identify the Uptime Kuma container with
docker ps, or locate the directory that contains the non-Docker Uptime Kuma installation. - Know the username whose password must change. The utility asks for it interactively.
- Have a replacement password ready. You will enter it and confirm it at the prompts.
- Stop the normal Uptime Kuma service or container before invoking the reset. A running server can hold the database connection or port and interfere with the administrative script.
- Make sure you can start the same service again after the command completes.
Stopping Uptime Kuma briefly makes the web interface unavailable. That interruption is intentional: the reset tool needs exclusive, uncomplicated access to the installation’s database and runtime.

1. Find the right container
On the Docker host, list running containers:
docker psRead the container name from the output. Use the container that serves the Uptime Kuma instance where the forgotten account exists. If several Uptime Kuma containers are present, confirm which one is attached to the data volume and port used by your login page rather than choosing the first matching name.
2. Stop the running container
Stop the normal Uptime Kuma process before running the reset utility:
docker stop <container name>Replace the placeholder with the actual name from docker ps. If your deployment is controlled by a separate service manager, stop it there as well; starting the application again while the reset is running can recreate the database or port conflict.

3. Run the bundled utility
Invoke the npm script through the container:
docker exec -it <container name> npm run reset-passwordThe command is intentionally kept at the npm-script level. Uptime Kuma has changed the internal implementation between release generations, while the user-facing script name remains the stable interface.
4. Complete the prompts
Enter the requested username, type the new password, and type it again when asked for confirmation. Keep the terminal attached until the utility reports completion or returns to the shell. A command that exits because of a database or port error has not necessarily changed the password.
5. Start the container and test the login
Start the same container again:
docker start <container name>Open the Uptime Kuma login page and use the username selected in the reset prompt with the new password. Testing the login against the same URL you used before helps confirm that the command targeted the correct container and data volume.
Reset the password without Docker
1. Stop Uptime Kuma
Stop the process or service that normally runs Uptime Kuma. The exact service-manager command depends on how you installed it, so use the same mechanism you normally use to stop Uptime Kuma. Do not leave the web server running while the reset utility is trying to acquire the database.
2. Change to the installation directory
Open a shell in the directory containing the Uptime Kuma application and its package metadata. Running the script from an unrelated directory can invoke a different project or fail because the npm script is not defined.

3. Invoke reset-password
npm run reset-passwordAnswer the username and password prompts. The script updates the account through Uptime Kuma’s normal application logic; you do not need to open the SQLite database or calculate a password hash yourself.
4. Restart and verify
Start Uptime Kuma with your usual service command, then sign in through the web interface. If the old password is still accepted while the new one is rejected, stop and check that you ran the command in the directory belonging to the active instance and that its data directory is the one used by the running service.
Password reset versus two-factor-authentication recovery
A forgotten password and a lost authenticator code are separate problems. Current upstream package metadata defines two different administrative scripts:
reset-passwordchanges an account password.remove-2faremoves the account’s two-factor-authentication requirement.
If you know the password but no longer have the authenticator device or recovery information, use the remove-2fa script rather than expecting reset-password to bypass the second factor. If you have lost both credentials, remove the 2FA lockout first and then run the password reset, following the same stop-service rule for each administrative operation.
The scripts are separate in current upstream metadata, so a successful password reset alone does not imply that 2FA has been disabled.

Troubleshoot a reset that fails

Do not edit the SQLite database manually as a first response. Manual edits bypass Uptime Kuma’s supported password-handling code and can make later recovery harder. Use a database-level intervention only if you have a tested recovery plan for your specific release and a verified backup.
Why stopping the service matters
Two different classes of failure point to the same operational mistake. A Knex timeout indicates that the reset utility could not obtain a usable database connection, while EADDRINUSE indicates that the normal application is already bound to port 3001. Both are consistent with running administrative work alongside the live server instead of giving the utility an idle installation.
Stopping the service also prevents a second process from writing to the account database while the reset is in progress. Once the command has completed, start only the normal Uptime Kuma service and verify the login.
Version and runtime considerations
The stable, user-facing instruction is still npm run reset-password. In the current upstream master package, that script invokes node --import=tsx extra/reset-password.mts; older releases used a JavaScript implementation behind the same npm command. This is why instructions that call the npm script are more portable than instructions that hard-code an internal filename.
Current upstream package metadata on the searched master branch reports version 3.0.0-beta.0 and a requirement of Node.js >= 26.2.0. Those are branch-state facts, not universal requirements for every installed Uptime Kuma release. Your deployed version may use a different Node requirement while still exposing the same reset command. If an upgrade or downgrade has changed the runtime, use the Node version supported by that release rather than copying the branch requirement blindly.

A safe recovery checklist
- Identify the active Uptime Kuma container with
docker ps, or identify the host installation directory. - Confirm that the account and data belong to that instance, especially when more than one Uptime Kuma deployment exists.
- Stop the normal service or container.
- Run
docker exec -it <container name> npm run reset-passwordfor Docker, ornpm run reset-passwordfrom the non-Docker installation directory. - Enter the intended username and confirm the new password at both prompts.
- If the obstacle is an authenticator code, use the separate
remove-2fascript; do not treat it as part of the password command. - Restart the same Uptime Kuma service and test the login through its normal address.
- If the result is unchanged, investigate the container, data directory, database connection, and port conflicts before attempting any manual database edit.
Common questions
Is there a default Uptime Kuma password?
No default password is the supported recovery path. Use the bundled reset-password utility and set a new credential for the intended username.
Can I run the Docker command while Uptime Kuma is still serving traffic?
You should stop the running container first. Leaving it active can produce database acquisition failures or a port conflict and can result in no password change.

Does resetting the password remove 2FA?
No. Password reset and 2FA removal are separate administrative operations. Use remove-2fa when the authenticator code, rather than the password, is the barrier.
Should I edit the SQLite file if the script fails?
No. First stop the service, verify the target installation, and retry the supported utility. Manual database editing should be reserved for a tested recovery procedure and a verified backup.
