A PS3 uses a standard Ethernet cable with RJ45 plugs. Cat5e is enough for a normal connection; Cat6 works too and is a sensible alternative if the price is close. Connect the cable from the PS3’s LAN port to a router or network switch—no PlayStation-specific cable is needed.
Which cable should you buy?
Choose a male-to-male Ethernet patch cable with RJ45 plugs at both ends and a Cat5e or Cat6 rating. Pick a length that reaches without pulling on the console’s port or creating a trip hazard.
| Cable | PS3 suitability | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Cat5e RJ45 | Suitable | Lowest-cost sensible option for a PS3 connection. |
| Cat6 RJ45 | Suitable | Good default if its price is close to Cat5e or you may reuse it with newer devices. |
| Cat6a | Generally compatible with an appropriate RJ45 patch cable | Unnecessary for a routine PS3 connection. |
| Cat7 or Cat8 | Not needed for a PS3-only setup | Higher category numbers do not make the console faster. |
| RJ11 telephone cord | Not suitable | Wrong cable and connector for Ethernet. |
Sony lists the PS3’s Ethernet interface as supporting 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T. That describes supported link modes, not guaranteed internet speed. Cat5e is a practical choice for this interface; Cat6 is also compatible. Sony’s PS3 hardware specifications and Safety and Support manual document the Ethernet modes and cable guidance.
What do Ethernet, RJ45 and Cat6 mean?
- Ethernet is the wired networking connection.
- RJ45 is the familiar modular plug fitted to a standard Ethernet patch cable. It is not a speed rating.
- Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a identify cable performance categories, not different PS3 connectors.
- Patch cable means a pre-terminated cable commonly used between a console and router or switch.
Check the listing for Ethernet or LAN, RJ45 plugs at both ends, and Cat5e or Cat6. A standard residential telephone cord is not a substitute; Sony warns against using one in its console safety manual. HDMI carries audio and video, while USB and coaxial cables serve different purposes.

Cat5e or Cat6: which makes more sense?
Choose Cat5e to keep it simple
Cat5e is adequate for a normal PS3-to-router connection and is often the economical choice, especially for a short cable dedicated to the console.
Choose Cat6 for flexibility
Cat6 works with the PS3 and can be reused with newer network equipment. A Cat6 cable’s capability does not upgrade the PS3’s network hardware: actual performance depends on the console, router or switch, internet service, remote servers and software. A higher-rated cable cannot guarantee faster downloads or lower game latency.

Skip premium categories for a PS3-only connection
Cat6a, Cat7 and Cat8 offer no meaningful PS3-specific advantage for a routine home connection. Buy a correctly terminated Ethernet cable, not a category number for its own sake.
What length and construction should you choose?
Measure the route from the console to the router or switch, then allow enough slack to connect without bending sharply or putting strain on the plug. A short cable suits equipment on the same stand; a longer one can cross a room, but route and secure it to avoid crushing or tripping. For a permanent wall run, use cable rated for that installation rather than an ordinary loose patch lead.

- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- For ordinary indoor use, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is generally adequate.
- Choose a cable with reliable connector strain relief; a snagless boot can help protect the latch.
- Pure copper is preferable to poorly specified copper-clad aluminum cable.
- A slim cable may fit a crowded entertainment center, but it is a form-factor choice, not a performance upgrade.
Shielding is not automatically better for a home console setup; it is mainly relevant to particular electrically noisy or professionally installed environments.
Does the PS3 need a special cable or crossover cable?
No. For a PS3 connected to a router, modem/router or Ethernet switch, use an ordinary straight-through Ethernet patch cable. You do not need a branded PlayStation cable or a crossover cable for that standard setup.

If connecting directly to a computer, try a normal patch cable first. If that arrangement fails, check the computer’s network adapter and IP configuration; whether older equipment handles a direct connection automatically can vary. Do not buy a crossover cable unless the specific devices in that setup require one.

If the wired connection fails
Work from the physical connection toward network settings before assuming the console needs a special cable.
- Reseat both plugs and check the router or switch for a link or activity light.
- Try another router port, then test with a known-good Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
- Restart the router and PS3, then run the connection setup again using Easy.
- If another device can use the same cable and port but the PS3 cannot, inspect the PS3’s Ethernet port for damage or debris.
- Use Custom setup only if the network requires it or Easy setup fails. Verify the IP address, subnet mask, default router, DNS, MTU and proxy settings against the network’s requirements.
Sony’s advanced network-settings guide describes Custom setup and Ethernet operation settings. Leave Ethernet speed and operation mode on automatic unless troubleshooting a specific network issue; manually forcing 1000BASE-T is not a normal setup fix.
Use the test result to narrow the fault
- If the PS3 cannot obtain an IP address, check the cable, router port, local network and DHCP settings.
- If it reaches the local network but not the internet, investigate the router, DNS, ISP or service availability.
- If internet access succeeds but a particular online feature does not, the cause may be remote-service availability rather than the cable.
- A successful test does not promise fast downloads or smooth multiplayer performance.
Will Ethernet make PS3 games faster?
A wired connection avoids dependence on Wi-Fi and can help when wireless interference or signal variability is the problem. It does not guarantee a particular ping, download rate or online-service result. Cable category is only one part of the connection; the console, router, internet plan, remote servers and game all matter. Sony’s documentation of gigabit Ethernet should not be read as a promise of gigabit internet throughput.
