Respec at the Lantern just before the Sphinx encounter, which follows the Salt Mines mine-cart section in Chapter IV: Dark Descent. For the most forgiving setup, reach at least level 20, keep Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage high, equip Dominatus II and Volatile End, and use the Saber. Bring Hand Grenades, Oil Grenades, Special Rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. Use parries to break posture, convert the opening into a critical attack, then use fire and a Blunderbuss to punish the exposed head in phase two.
The Sphinx is a timing fight rather than a damage-race fight. Block or parry its regular swipes, dodge the unblockable jump, avoid the crow projectile, jump the Stasis shockwave and do not attack outside recovery windows. If Stasis buildup is repeatedly ending attempts, add a Cleansing Vial to your quick items and stop trading blows while the gauge is nearly full.

Where to respec before the Sphinx
The Sphinx appears in the Caverns after the Salt Mines and the mine-cart section. The Lantern near that route is your preparation point. Lanterns are safe spaces: you can level up, improve equipment and alter your build there. Skills can be upgraded at any Lantern, and respeccing is available from the same menu for a small fee. The game does not publish a numeric respec price in the available guidance, so make sure you have enough Catalysts before committing to changes.
Rest at the Lantern immediately before entering the arena. Restocking there is safer than trying to improvise after a failed attempt, and it lets you restore your consumables, adjust quick items and confirm that both boss Ambers are equipped.

The default Sphinx respec: a durable Saber build
A Saber setup is the best starting point if your parries are inconsistent. It gives you enough survivability to learn the attack strings while still benefiting from posture breaks and fire damage. The essential target is level 20 or higher; a level-21 distribution is a useful reference for how to spend the available points.
| Skill | Reference allocation | Why it helps here |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Health | 4/4 | Provides room for a missed dodge, a partial block or one Stasis mistake. |
| Maximum Endurance | 4/4 | Supports repeated blocks, evasive steps and the stamina cost of sustained pressure. |
| Blocking | 4/4 | Makes the first phase’s blockable claw and tail sequences easier to survive and learn. |
| Melee Damage | 4/4 | Improves Saber punish windows and the damage you deal after a posture break. |
| Airborne Aiming | 1/1 | Lets you aim while jumping, useful when responding to a ground-level Stasis pulse. |
| Headshot Damage | 2/4 | Improves firearm punishment when the Sphinx exposes its head in phase two. |
| Ferrofluid Flask Refill | 1/1 | Extends your healing supply for a learning attempt or a long successful run. |
This allocation is a general level-21 reference, not a mandatory exact spread. If you are below level 21, preserve the priorities rather than trying to copy every rank: survival and stamina come before optional firearm damage. If you have more points, continue reinforcing the attributes that match your weapon and the mistakes you are actually making.
Why these two Ambers matter
Dominatus converts posture buildup into a powerful critical opportunity. The Sphinx rewards you for blocking and parrying, so this Amber turns defensive timing into your largest guaranteed melee punish. Use Dominatus II when available; the recommendation is specifically for the upgraded version, while Dominatus remains a workable fallback.
Volatile End increases damage when a weak point is visible. In phase two, the Sphinx exposes its head, so this Amber improves the value of every Blunderbuss shot and any other accurate attack during that opening. The two Ambers cover the fight’s two decisive moments: Dominatus for the posture break and Volatile End for the exposed-head phase.
Weapons, ammunition and consumables
Saber as the primary weapon
Keep the Saber equipped for normal neutral play. Its role is not to stand in front of the boss and trade hits; it is to deliver controlled strikes after a blocked sequence, a successful dodge or a posture break. Short punish strings are safer than committing to a long combo while the Sphinx can still retaliate.
Blunderbuss for the phase-two head
Carry a Blunderbuss and reserve Special Rounds for the exposed head. The firearm is most valuable when the weak point is visible, not as a replacement for your melee game. Wait for a clean line, fire, then return to movement. Shooting while the boss is turning or while the Stasis meter is high can leave you stationary at the worst possible moment.

Fire and explosive items
Fire Transmutation should be your default elemental tool. Apply it between melee openings and during recovery animations rather than interrupting your defensive rhythm to force a cast. Hand Grenades add burst damage when the Sphinx is committed to a long animation; Oil Grenades support a burn-focused plan and are most efficient when the target can remain in the effect for its duration.
Bring Special Rounds even if you intend to win mainly with the Saber. They give you a reliable way to capitalize on the phase-two head without requiring a risky close-range approach. Keep your grenade supply for confirmed openings instead of throwing on cooldown.
Ferrofluid Flasks and the Cleansing Vial
Carry at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. Five is the recommended minimum for a prepared attempt, not a guarantee that the fight will consume all of them. If you routinely run out, the problem is usually repeated damage or Stasis exposure rather than insufficient healing; adjust your spacing before adding more damage options.
A Cleansing Vial is the correct respec-adjacent adjustment when Stasis buildup is causing deaths. Put it in a quick-item slot so you can use it without opening a menu. It does not replace learning the shockwave and beam; it gives you a recovery button when an unavoidable mistake or a late-phase chain pushes the gauge toward crystallization.
How the Sphinx fight is structured
Guide data lists the Sphinx at 2,000 HP with a 350-point posture pool and a 300-damage critical attack. These figures are published by AllThingsHow in 2026 and should be treated as guide values rather than independently verified developer specifications. The fight has two practical goals: fill posture safely in phase one, then damage the exposed head in phase two.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Sphinx has no Stasis resistance according to the same guide, and its Stasis gauge is described as having five segments. That means Stasis can affect the boss, but your own buildup remains a major threat. Track both meters: do not let an opportunity to apply an effect make you ignore the purple shockwave, beam or crystallization risk.

Phase one: build posture without forcing damage
Stay close enough to read the Sphinx’s claw and tail timing. Excessive distance can make the crow projectile harder to see and encourages panic reactions, while standing directly under the boss can hide the start of a jump. Your objective is to make each sequence predictable.
Three-swipe claw sequence
The three-swipe string is blockable and can be parried. Hold your guard if the timing is not yet consistent; a clean block keeps you alive and lets you learn the rhythm. Once you can recognize the final swipe, begin parrying the individual blows to accelerate posture damage. Do not chase a fourth hit after the string ends: wait for the recovery animation, then deliver a short Saber punish or apply Fire Transmutation.
Tail sequences
Treat the tail attacks like the claw string: block or parry the predictable hits, then reset your position. If your stamina is low after blocking, stop attacking and create space until it recovers. A depleted stamina bar turns a successful defense into a stun and makes the next unblockable attack much harder to avoid.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Unblockable jump
The jump is unblockable. Dodge rather than holding guard, and do not attempt to absorb the landing with a partial block. The safest response is an early lateral dodge that clears the landing area, followed by a brief pause to confirm where the Sphinx ends up. Attack only after the landing has finished; swinging during the ascent often leaves you under the impact zone.
Crow projectile
The crow projectile travels in a line and is best handled with a sidestep. Keep the Sphinx in view while moving so you do not evade into a claw or tail follow-up. If you are already behind the boss when the projectile begins, reposition rather than rolling repeatedly; preserving stamina matters more than gaining one extra hit.
Stasis shockwave
Jump over the purple Stasis pulse. A ground dodge can leave you inside the wave, and blocking is not the intended answer. Watch the floor and the boss’s release animation, jump cleanly, then land ready to defend. Airborne Aiming can help you maintain a shot opportunity while clearing the pulse, but do not sacrifice the jump timing just to fire.

Fire Transmutation windows
Use Fire Transmutation between melee openings, especially after the Sphinx completes a swipe string or lands from the jump. The goal is to add burn while the boss is recovering, not to cast through an active attack. If the boss is already applying pressure, keep your weapon ready and wait for the next safe animation.
Breaking posture and taking the critical opening
Parries are the fastest route to the posture break, but heavy attacks during reliable recovery windows also contribute. With Dominatus II equipped, prioritize a clean defensive cycle over extra swings. When the posture meter breaks, trigger the critical attack immediately rather than throwing a grenade or starting a long cast first. The guide-reported critical attack deals 300 damage, so delaying it wastes the encounter’s most valuable opening.
A Rapier plan is available for players who already have strong perfect-parry timing. AllThingsHow reports that a perfect Rapier parry deals 150 posture damage; three such parries would fill the reported 350-point pool, although the exact interaction should be regarded as guide data rather than a developer-confirmed specification. The practical implication is that a skilled Rapier user can shift points from firearm-oriented damage into Parrying Impact and fish for fast posture breaks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Phase two: punish the exposed head
When phase two exposes the Sphinx’s head, change priorities. Keep burn active, equip the Blunderbuss and use Special Rounds for clear head shots. Volatile End is active because the weak point is visible, so accurate shots are more valuable than another close-range trade.
Beam response
Sidestep the beam. Begin moving as the attack forms instead of waiting for the visual line to reach you. After the beam passes, take the shot or apply a brief melee punish only if the boss is still in recovery. A greedy attack during the beam’s startup can trap you in its path.
Managing Stasis and Crystallization
Do not trade hits while your Stasis or Crystallization meter is high. The five-segment gauge gives you a visible warning, but the final segment can arrive quickly if you remain in repeated effects. Use a Cleansing Vial when the buildup is threatening to end the attempt, then return to movement and head-shot opportunities. Stasis Transmutation is an optional control tool; use it only if you can apply it without losing the positioning needed for the head exposure.

When to throw grenades
Hand Grenades and Oil Grenades are strongest after a beam dodge, during a long recovery or immediately after the boss has committed to an animation that cannot turn toward you. Do not throw while the head is hidden unless the grenade will still connect safely. Your Blunderbuss and fire application should remain the consistent damage plan; explosives are supplements for confirmed openings.
Choosing between the Saber and Rapier respecs
| Plan | Attribute and skill emphasis | Combat pattern | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Durable Saber | Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage; Headshot Damage at 2/4; Dominatus II and Volatile End | Block or parry strings, punish recovery, then use fire and head shots | Players who want forgiving defenses and do not land every perfect parry |
| Parry Rapier | Replace the firearm-oriented Headshot Damage investment with Parrying Impact; retain the boss Ambers | Fish for perfect parries, build posture rapidly and take the critical opening | Players already comfortable with Rapier timing |
| Status-management variant | Keep the chosen weapon plan; add a Cleansing Vial to quick items | Use fire for damage, cleanse before the gauge peaks and avoid late trades | Players repeatedly dying to Stasis buildup rather than direct damage |
The Rapier option is not automatically stronger. Its value depends on your ability to land perfect parries; missed attempts remove the posture advantage and leave you with less firearm damage if you moved points out of Headshot Damage. The Saber plan is the safer first respec, while the Rapier plan rewards a player who can reproduce the timing consistently.
Common failure points and corrections
“I die before phase two.”
Raise the priority of Health, Endurance and Blocking, and stop trying to force damage after every parry. The first phase is designed to reward patience. Block the three-swipe and tail sequences until their timing is familiar, dodge the jump, sidestep the crow and jump the Stasis pulse.
Recommended Free Tools
“My posture meter barely moves.”
Use the defensive plan deliberately: parry the blockable swipes instead of only rolling away, and add heavy attacks during confirmed recovery windows. Dominatus II does not replace posture buildup; it makes the eventual critical opening more valuable.
“I miss every phase-two head shot.”
Wait for the head to become fully exposed, then fire from a stable position with the Blunderbuss. Do not shoot during a turn, beam startup or Stasis reaction. If your build moved into Parrying Impact, remember that you gave up Headshot Damage for a stronger posture plan; win phase two with fewer, better shots instead of trying to spray ammunition.
“Stasis ends the attempt even when my health is high.”
Equip a Cleansing Vial, jump the shockwave consistently and stop trading while the meter is near its final segment. The boss is reported to have no Stasis resistance, so optional Stasis Transmutation can provide control, but your own gauge remains the immediate survival concern.
“I run out of healing.”
Start with at least five Ferrofluid Flasks and use the Lantern’s refill-related skill if available. If those flasks disappear before phase two, identify the source: blocking without stamina, standing in the shockwave, taking the crow line or accepting beam damage. More healing cannot fix a repeated positioning error.

Rewards and what the numbers mean
AllThingsHow reports a reward of 20,000 Catalysts for defeating the Sphinx. The same guide lists 2,000 HP, 350 posture, 300 critical-attack damage and 150 posture damage for a perfect Rapier parry. These are useful planning figures for choosing between a durable Saber build and a parry-focused Rapier build, but they are guide-published values rather than independently verified developer specifications.
Once the boss is defeated, you no longer need to preserve the Sphinx-specific respec. Return to a Lantern and restore the attributes, Ambers and quick items that suit exploration or the next encounter. Keep a record of the original allocation before changing it if you expect to switch back.
Quick Recap
A complete attempt plan
- At the Lantern after the Salt Mines mine-cart section, reach level 20 or higher if possible and respec toward Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage.
- Equip the Saber, Dominatus II and Volatile End. Add Headshot Damage for the general plan, or Parrying Impact if you are deliberately using the Rapier.
- Restock Hand Grenades, Oil Grenades, Special Rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. Add a Cleansing Vial if Stasis has caused previous deaths.
- Enter phase one and remain close enough to read the claw and tail strings. Block or parry the three swipes and tail attacks.
- Dodge the unblockable jump, sidestep the crow projectile and jump the purple Stasis shockwave.
- Apply Fire Transmutation only during recovery windows. Build posture patiently instead of trading attacks.
- When posture breaks, take the Dominatus-powered critical opening immediately.
- In phase two, maintain burn, sidestep the beam and wait for the head to expose.
- Fire the Blunderbuss with Special Rounds at the exposed head, using Volatile End to increase weak-point damage.
- Use grenades during confirmed recoveries, cleanse before Stasis reaches its final segment and keep moving until the Sphinx falls.
