How to Restart a 24/7 Recorded Lecture Stream Automatically After OBS Crashes

An external process monitor—not OBS reconnect—must relaunch OBS after a crash. Configure startup flags, supervise the process, and test the full lecture-stream recovery safely.

To restart a 24/7 lecture stream after OBS crashes, use an external process supervisor to detect that OBS has exited, wait briefly, confirm it is no longer running, then launch it again with the right OBS profile and automatic output setting. OBS’s own reconnect feature handles a dropped connection while OBS is still running; it cannot relaunch the application after a crash.

How OBS crash recovery works

Recovery has two separate jobs: an outside monitor must restart the OBS process, and OBS must be told what to do when it opens. OBS’s documented launch parameters include --startstreaming, --startrecording, and selectors for a scene collection, profile, and scene. Those options configure a new launch; they do not monitor OBS or repair unavailable credentials, media, network access, or a streaming endpoint. See the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters documentation, dated May 30, 2021, and confirm support against your installed release.

Keep the monitor outside OBS. An OBS script or WebSocket controller can automate a running instance, but it is not a dependable crash monitor once the OBS process has terminated. OBS describes these extension and control options in its Developer Guide; that guide does not promise crash recovery.

Prepare OBS to restart the lecture output

  1. Save the working setup. Keep the lecture scene collection and profile, and confirm the intended scene, media files, audio sources, stream credentials, and recording destination are available to the account that will run OBS.
  2. Choose which output should start. Use --startstreaming to begin the configured stream or --startrecording to begin a local recording. If the lecture needs both, verify a safe startup procedure for your installed OBS version rather than assuming one launch flag starts both.
  3. Set the startup configuration. Substitute your actual collection and profile names in an example such as obs64.exe --collection "Lecture" --profile "24-7" --startstreaming. For local recording instead, use --startrecording in place of --startstreaming. These are illustrative command lines, not tested combinations; check the current launch-parameter documentation and test them locally.
  4. Run in the right user context. The supervisor must have access to the OBS configuration, media paths, credentials, and any devices the scene requires. A launch in a different account or session may not have the same sources or settings.

Set up an external restart monitor

Windows: Task Scheduler plus a process monitor

Task Scheduler can start a task at system startup or in response to an event, and its actions can run an executable, script, or batch file. Microsoft documents the ONSTART and ONEVENT triggers in its schtasks create reference. That documentation does not supply an OBS process-exit watcher: a scheduled task trigger alone should not be mistaken for a complete crash-restart recipe.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Configure an always-on process supervisor or service wrapper to check whether OBS is running. Use Task Scheduler to start that monitor at startup if appropriate; the monitor, not just the startup trigger, must detect OBS exiting.
  2. After detecting an exit, have the monitor wait briefly and confirm no OBS process remains before relaunching. Configure logging, retry limits, and safeguards against duplicate instances or a rapid restart loop.
  3. When using Task Scheduler for an automated OBS launch, set its Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS’s launch-parameter instructions specify.
  4. Run the monitor under the same Windows user/session context that can reach the OBS profile, lecture media, stream credentials, and required devices.

macOS and Linux

The sources cited here do not establish a specific macOS or Linux service configuration for OBS crash recovery. Use an operating-system-appropriate supervisor that can monitor the OBS process and relaunch it in the session where its sources and credentials are available. Validate the launch arguments, desktop/session access, and post-crash behavior on the exact machine and OBS release; do not assume a Windows Task Scheduler setup translates directly.

What each recovery method can and cannot do

Method Useful for Limit
External process supervisor or service wrapper Checking whether OBS is alive and relaunching it after exit; it can also be configured for delays, retry limits, and logs. Must be selected and configured for the host OS, user session, and devices. The cited sources do not certify a particular supervisor.
Windows Task Scheduler Starting a monitor or launch action at system startup or on a configured event. Microsoft’s cited reference does not specify an OBS process-exit watcher or an OBS-specific watchdog.
OBS launch parameters Starting streaming or recording and selecting a collection, profile, or scene when OBS opens. Do not monitor a crash or resolve missing credentials, media, devices, network access, or endpoint problems.
OBS scripts or WebSocket Automating or controlling a running OBS instance. Not a replacement for an external monitor after the OBS process exits.
OBS network reconnect Recovering a connection drop while OBS remains open. Does not restart OBS after the application crashes.

Test recovery before relying on it

  1. Test in a planned maintenance window, not during a live lecture. First stop OBS cleanly and confirm the monitor starts the intended configuration.
  2. In a controlled window, cause an unexpected OBS exit and check that the monitor waits, avoids a duplicate instance, and launches the correct profile and output.
  3. Separately simulate a temporary stream connection failure. This tests OBS’s network reconnect behavior, not process-crash recovery.
  4. Confirm the stream returns and, if using local recording, that the expected recording file is created and usable. Inspect OBS logs and any monitor logs.
  5. Check for prompts after an improper shutdown, plugin or script failures, missing sources, unavailable credentials, and media paths that no longer resolve. OBS source localization documents a crash-detection dialog and Safe Mode option, but behavior can vary by release and operating system; verify on your installation.

Troubleshoot common restart failures

  • OBS never reopens: Confirm the supervisor is still running and configured to detect process exit rather than only system startup. Check its logs and verify the OBS executable path and launch arguments.
  • OBS opens but does not stream or record: Check for the correct startup flag, profile, collection, credentials, and destination. A successful process launch does not prove that an output started.
  • OBS opens with missing scenes or media: Check the user account and session used by the supervisor, plus file paths, permissions, mounted storage, and attached devices.
  • Repeated launches or multiple OBS windows: Add a brief delay and a check that no OBS process remains before restarting; configure retry limits to prevent a rapid loop.
  • A crash dialog blocks unattended startup: Inspect the prompt during a controlled test. If needed, investigate plugin and script compatibility; OBS’s Safe Mode disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets, so it can help diagnose a failure but may also remove functionality your scene needs.
  • OBS restarts but YouTube remains offline: Check network availability, stream credentials, and the configured streaming endpoint. A process monitor cannot restore an unavailable network or endpoint.

Know what a restart cannot recover

Restarting OBS only addresses an OBS process exit. It does not keep the host computer powered, restore a failed internet connection, make unavailable media or credentials accessible, or repair a streaming endpoint. For availability beyond the OBS process, monitor the stream from outside the same machine. A UPS may help with a power outage, but it is a separate power-resilience measure, not an OBS crash-restart mechanism.
