YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can manage when an encoder starts or stops a broadcast, but they do not restart a crashed encoder, restore a failed network connection, or restart a stopped video loop. Automatic recovery depends on which part of the chain failed: the media player, encoder, network, or YouTube broadcast. Set up each layer accordingly, then verify recovery in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
What “automatic restart” needs to recover
A YouTube live stream depends on several parts working together. Your looping ASMR video must continue playing; an encoder must send its audio-video feed through the configured stream URL and stream key; the network must carry that feed; and YouTube must have the correct broadcast active. A restart method only helps with the failure it can reach.
- Loop or media-player failure: The source video stops playing or the player exits. The player or the process running it needs to resume.
- Encoder failure: The encoding software or hardware stops. YouTube’s broadcast settings do not relaunch the encoder; process supervision or encoder-specific automation is needed.
- Network interruption: The encoder may remain open but lose its connection to YouTube. Recovery depends on the encoder reconnecting and the broadcast remaining usable.
- Broadcast ended: The feed may be available, but the YouTube event is no longer live. You may need to start an appropriate scheduled or new broadcast rather than simply resume the feed.
YouTube describes the encoder as the source that sends content to a live stream using its stream URL and key. Its help documentation also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; this is an archiving rule, not an uptime guarantee or restart mechanism. What YouTube auto-start and auto-stop do
YouTube’s live stream settings document auto-start and auto-stop as controls for starting and stopping a stream from the encoder. Reusing stream settings also copies those selections. They address the YouTube stream lifecycle; the documentation does not say they restart a failed media player or encoder, fix a broken connection, or guarantee that a broadcast will recover after ending. Check the settings available in your own YouTube Studio account before relying on them. Feature availability and interface details can change, and the documentation does not establish that every creator account or region exposes the same controls.
Configure a reliable recovery path
1. Confirm the source really loops
Check the video player or playlist that supplies the ASMR recording. Verify that looping is enabled and that the source remains open after the end of the file. If the player itself can exit or freeze, YouTube cannot restart it; configure the player or operating system to relaunch it, or use a setup that supervises the playback process.
2. Keep the encoder process running or supervise it
Make sure your encoder is sending the intended feed to YouTube using the correct stream URL and stream key. If the encoder exits, restarting the broadcast from YouTube alone will not recreate that outgoing feed. Use encoder or operating-system process automation to detect an exit and relaunch the encoder, and make sure the relaunch loads the correct source and stream settings.

Test what happens when the encoder loses its connection and when the encoder process is deliberately stopped. Reconnection behavior varies by encoder and configuration; the cited YouTube documentation does not prescribe a universal retry setting. Avoid assuming that an encoder window marked “streaming” proves viewers are receiving a working broadcast.
3. Set YouTube’s lifecycle controls for your event
Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio, then configure the available auto-start and auto-stop options to match how you intend to manage that event. These settings can coordinate the encoder with the broadcast, but they are not a substitute for keeping the source and encoder alive.
For scheduled broadcasts, the OBS Project’s community guide describes a workflow in which the encoder must be started to provide a preview before going live when auto-start and auto-stop are not enabled. Treat it as an example rather than authoritative current click-by-click guidance; YouTube’s current interface and account settings take precedence. 4. Add external automation only if you can monitor the whole chain
An external controller or API integration can manage broadcast events, but it still needs to account for the encoder, authorization, the broadcast’s lifecycle state, and API errors. YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveStream resource for the audio-video feed from a liveBroadcast resource for the event. Its overview describes scheduled or recurring events using a distinct stream resource for each broadcast; it is not a complete restart recipe. Before automating event creation or restart, decide how the controller will identify the intended broadcast, check whether it is still active, and handle errors without starting an unintended duplicate or ending the wrong event. The API overview does not establish a particular third-party tool as reliable or supported.

- Confirm the looping source is playing and has not exited.
- Confirm the encoder process is active and sending data to YouTube.
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and check the preview and stream-health indicator for messages about the feed.
- Determine whether the existing broadcast is still active or has ended before starting another broadcast or scheduling a replacement.
YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room display messages next to the stream-health indicator. Use that status alongside the encoder’s state: an encoder showing “streaming” on its own does not prove that YouTube has a healthy feed. YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages

When practical, validate the process with a private or unlisted stream before relying on it for a public continuous broadcast.

Troubleshoot when the stream does not return
The source is no longer playing
Restart the player or playlist and check its loop behavior. If it exits again, address the player’s own failure or configure process supervision; changing YouTube’s auto-start setting will not restore missing media.
The encoder is open but YouTube has no healthy feed
Check the encoder’s outgoing connection and the stream URL and key configured for the intended broadcast. Then inspect YouTube’s preview and health messages. Use those messages to diagnose the feed rather than relying only on the encoder’s status.

The encoder process has stopped
Restart it manually to restore service, then add encoder or operating-system automation if unattended recovery is required. Confirm that the restarted process loads the right source and settings and that YouTube receives data.
YouTube shows the broadcast has ended
Check the event’s current state before trying to reconnect. A feed resource and a broadcast event are distinct in YouTube’s API model, so restoring the encoder feed does not necessarily restart an event that has ended. Select or create the appropriate broadcast lifecycle for the next stream.
A scheduled stream requires a manual action
Review the auto-start and auto-stop selections for that stream and consult the current YouTube Studio interface. The OBS community guide describes manual Live Control Room steps when those options are off, but its interface instructions may not match the current UI.
