To bring an FFmpeg YouTube stream back after a VPS reboot, run FFmpeg as a systemd service, enable the service at boot, and configure it to restart after failures. Then verify both that FFmpeg is running and that YouTube Studio is receiving healthy media for the intended broadcast: a running process alone does not prove the stream has recovered.
What systemd can—and cannot—restore
There are two separate recovery checks. First, systemd must launch the FFmpeg process after boot or relaunch it if it exits. Second, FFmpeg must be able to read its input, connect to YouTube, authenticate with the correct stream key, and send decodable media. systemd handles process supervision; it cannot guarantee the full media path is healthy.
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health. See its encoder settings and live streaming guidance.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
The following is a template, not a universal drop-in service. Replace the user, paths, input, output endpoint, key source, codecs, and encoding settings for your VPS and stream. Run FFmpeg directly as the service command where practical, so systemd supervises the encoder process itself.

Set network ordering only when it fits your host
Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target request ordering after the network-online target. They do not themselves make the connection work or guarantee that the target waits for a usable connection. The VPS network stack must provide the appropriate wait-online behavior. network.target alone does not mean the network is operational. See the systemd documentation on boot ordering and your distribution’s network manager documentation.
Protect the stream key
Do not put a real key in a publicly shared unit, a command you paste into a public issue, or shell history. A restricted environment file is one possible approach, with ownership and permissions limited to root and the service as appropriate. However, environment variables may be visible to privileged diagnostics. Depending on your systemd version and operational needs, systemd credentials or a dedicated secret mechanism may be preferable. Keep access to the key limited, and rotate it if it is exposed.

Choose a command that matches the stream
The sample uses a local file with real-time input pacing and illustrative encoding values; it is not a universal bitrate prescription. Change the input and codecs to suit your source and installed FFmpeg build. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and profile, so use the relevant YouTube encoder table and the settings shown in Live Control Room rather than treating the example values as universal. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.”
Use the ingest endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube’s current Live Control Room configuration. If the service calls a different FFmpeg binary than your interactive shell, use the absolute binary path as shown, and confirm it exists on the VPS.

Reload, enable, and start the service
Save the unit, for example as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. The commands below reload systemd’s unit definitions, configure the service to start during normal multi-user boot, start it now, and then inspect its state:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
enable configures boot activation; it does not, by itself, start the service immediately. That is why the sequence also runs start. To follow recent service output, use:

sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f
For unit syntax and restart behavior, consult man systemd.service and man systemd.unit on the VPS. Restart semantics, start limits, and available features depend on the installed systemd version and distribution configuration.
Test recovery after a planned reboot
- Check the service before reboot. Use
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand the journal to confirm the unit loaded and see whether FFmpeg is running or reporting an error. - Reboot during a suitable maintenance window. A reboot interrupts the stream. Do not test this during a broadcast that must remain uninterrupted.
- Check systemd after the VPS returns. Run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. If it failed or stopped, inspectsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b --no-pagerfor this boot’s output. - Check the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the intended broadcast is receiving media and that stream health is healthy. A service showing as active is not proof that YouTube has resumed the intended stream.
Choose the right recovery layer
| Layer | What it helps with | What it does not prove or fix |
|---|---|---|
| systemd boot enablement | Starts the service as part of normal boot. | Does not ensure the input, network, credentials, or broadcast are usable. |
Restart=on-failure |
Relaunches the service after qualifying failures, subject to systemd behavior and start limits. | Does not help if FFmpeg stays running while the media output is stalled or unhealthy. |
| FFmpeg or protocol-level output recovery | May recover a network output without the process exiting, depending on supported options, protocol, and build. | Does not replace boot enablement or process supervision, and does not guarantee a healthy YouTube broadcast. |
For a long-running service, the systemd project’s NEWS describes Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal as recommended choices. Confirm exact behavior and start limits in the manuals installed on your VPS. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options concern HTTP input behavior; input reconnection and output recovery are distinct. Check the FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation, then verify options against the local build with ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h. Online docs may describe a newer version than the package on your server.

Troubleshoot a stream that did not return
- The unit is not active after reboot: Confirm it is enabled with
systemctl is-enabled ffmpeg-youtube.service. Check the unit name andWantedBytarget, then inspect status and the boot journal. Confirm the paths inExecStartexist; system services may not have the same PATH as your interactive shell. - FFmpeg starts and exits: Read the service journal for the actual error. Check that the input file or URL is accessible to the configured service user and that FFmpeg can read it. A missing input or invalid command will not be fixed by repeated restarts.
- Connection or name-resolution errors: Check whether the VPS network is actually ready, DNS resolves, outbound firewall rules permit access, and the VPS provider has network connectivity. Confirm the selected YouTube ingest endpoint is reachable from the host.
- Authentication or stream-key errors: Verify that the key is current and belongs to the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. Keep it private; replace it if it has been exposed.
- The service is active but YouTube receives no healthy media: Inspect FFmpeg output and YouTube Studio’s stream-health status. A process can remain alive while its input or output has stalled. systemd’s process restart policy may not detect this. Consider FFmpeg output recovery, a health-check or watchdog design, or external monitoring only after validating the approach against the actual input and destination.
- The service repeatedly restarts: Inspect the error and systemd start-limit behavior rather than repeatedly forcing restarts. Fix the underlying issue—such as a bad key, missing source, unavailable endpoint, or incorrect command—before resetting failure state or changing retry behavior.
- An FFmpeg option is rejected: Check
ffmpeg -versionand the local help for the installed build. Do not assume a reconnect option from newer online documentation is present or applies to the output protocol you use.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos without maintaining an FFmpeg process on your VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video looping from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a camera-based live production. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
