This starts OBS and tells it to send stream data; it does not, by itself, guarantee that the correct YouTube broadcast is selected or that the broadcast is live for viewers. Set up and test the broadcast first, then verify both stages after a supervised reboot.
“Kids’ stream” can mean content intended for children or a stream with a child on camera. Those are different situations. If a child appears on camera, review YouTube’s age and supervision guidance below; an unattended automated stream is not a substitute for adult oversight.
What the automatic restart does—and does not do
There are three separate events: Windows starts OBS, OBS begins sending stream data, and YouTube makes the broadcast live to viewers. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation says --startstreaming starts streaming when OBS launches. It does not say that the parameter creates a YouTube broadcast or chooses one for you.
Before automating startup, make sure OBS is connected to the intended YouTube destination and that the right broadcast is available and selected. YouTube’s broadcast state and the stream data arriving from OBS are related, but not identical. A successful OBS launch is not proof that viewers can see the intended stream.

Prepare and test OBS and the YouTube broadcast
Check the scene and stream manually
- Open OBS and confirm the intended scene, video source, and audio sources. Check that the video and sound are present and usable.
- Confirm the YouTube account and stream destination in OBS, then select or configure the broadcast you intend to use. OBS’s YouTube setup guidance describes linking a broadcast to OBS’s Start Streaming action, but it is an OBS community resource last updated October 8, 2021; interface labels and workflows may have changed. Check the controls in your current OBS and YouTube Studio.
- Start a supervised test before relying on automatic startup. Confirm that OBS sends data and separately check whether the YouTube broadcast becomes live to viewers. OBS recommends testing settings and the stream before going live; see its Quick Start Guide and Overview Guide.
Choose the broadcast behavior deliberately
An OBS community guide describes scheduled-broadcast Auto-start as making the broadcast go live when OBS starts sending data. With Auto-start off, the operator must separately press Go Live in YouTube. It also says Auto-stop ends the broadcast when streaming stops and can prevent reconnecting to that broadcast later. This guidance is version-sensitive and was last updated in 2021, so check the current YouTube Studio controls rather than assuming the labels or behavior are unchanged. See the OBS community guide.

Set OBS to launch and start streaming after a Windows reboot
1. Find the OBS executable
The documented Windows launch parameter is applied to obs64.exe. If you already have an OBS shortcut, inspect its Target field and confirm the executable path. If you need to locate the executable, use the OBS shortcut’s file-location option or the folder where OBS Studio is installed.
2. Add the launch parameter to a shortcut
- Create or use a shortcut to
obs64.exe. Right-click the shortcut and open Properties. - In Target, leave the executable path in quotes and add a space followed by
--startstreamingafter the closing quote. The resulting format is"C:pathtoobs64.exe" --startstreaming; use the actual path on your PC. - Select Apply, then OK. Launch OBS with this shortcut and confirm that it opens and starts sending data to the intended broadcast.
Do not put the parameter inside the quoted executable path. OBS’s official Launch Parameters page documents the argument.

3. Put the shortcut in Windows Startup
- Press
Windows + R, entershell:startup, and press Enter. This opens the Startup folder for the Windows user who is signed in. - Copy the configured OBS shortcut into that folder. At the next sign-in, Windows should launch OBS through the shortcut and OBS should attempt to start streaming.
This approach runs when that user starts a Windows session; it is not a guarantee that OBS will launch before sign-in or that a reboot alone will complete the YouTube go-live process.
Alternative: use a scheduled or automated launch
A Windows scheduled task or other automation can launch OBS instead of relying on the Startup folder. OBS documents an important setting for automated launches: set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. The official launch-parameter page does not compare the reliability of Startup-folder shortcuts and scheduled tasks, so choose based on the launch conditions you need rather than assuming one is universally better.

Verify the complete reboot workflow
- Save the OBS scene and confirm the configured shortcut starts OBS with
--startstreaming. - With an adult supervising where appropriate, restart the computer and sign in to the Windows account that owns the Startup-folder shortcut, or allow the scheduled task to run under its configured account.
- Confirm OBS opens with the intended scene and begins sending data.
- Check YouTube Studio separately: confirm the intended broadcast is receiving data and determine whether it has actually gone live. If it has not, follow the current YouTube workflow to start it manually.
OBS’s argument cannot ensure that the network or YouTube is ready at the instant OBS launches, nor can it ensure that the selected broadcast is correct. If connectivity is delayed or the broadcast has ended, manual recovery may still be needed. That is why the reboot test should check both OBS and YouTube rather than treating the launch of OBS as success.

YouTube Help’s live-streaming guidance says a channel needs verification and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. For streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult, YouTube says live chat may be disabled and the account may temporarily lose access to chat or other features. These are YouTube’s stated rules, not a guarantee that a particular stream or account will be treated in a specific way.

If a child appears on camera, have an adult oversee the stream and review YouTube’s current guidance. A stream aimed at children does not, by itself, establish that a child is on camera. The setup steps here do not determine how a broadcast should be classified for its intended audience; use the current YouTube Studio controls and guidance for that decision.
Troubleshooting: OBS starts, but the stream does not
