Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

That will restart FFmpeg after an eligible failure exit, but it will not fix every stream interruption: a disconnected input, failed output, or process that remains alive while audio stops may need a different recovery layer.
First identify what “crashed” means
Choose the recovery mechanism according to the symptom. A process supervisor handles an exited process; FFmpeg protocol options handle some connection failures while the process is still running; a separate health check is needed for a live but stalled process.
| What you observe | Recovery layer to consider |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits with an error or is terminated abnormally | A service manager such as systemd |
| A supported network input disconnects while FFmpeg remains running | That input protocol’s reconnect options |
| A network output fails while FFmpeg remains running | Output recovery, such as the FFmpeg FIFO muxer where appropriate |
| The service is active but the stream has stopped carrying audio | A health check that observes the output or detects lack of progress |
The right flags depend on the host operating system, input protocol, destination, and the installed FFmpeg build. Check those details before adopting protocol-specific settings.
Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd
For a Linux host that uses systemd, create a service unit so FFmpeg runs under the service manager rather than as an unattended shell job. This illustrative template is not a tested configuration; replace the account, paths, input, format, and destination for your setup. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected formats.

- Adapt the command. Set
/usr/bin/ffmpegto the installed binary path, choose a service account and working directory, and replace the input and output placeholders. The example assumes a local audio file and does not establish a particular destination, codec, or audio/container compatibility. - Keep credentials protected. Do not put stream keys or other secrets in a unit file that is readable by everyone. Use an appropriately protected configuration mechanism for your system.
- Install and enable the unit. Save it as a systemd service unit, then reload systemd’s unit definitions and enable and start the service using your distribution’s normal systemctl workflow. Verify the unit status and logs before relying on unattended operation.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm that a genuine failure exit causes a restart after the configured delay. Do not treat a deliberate stop as a crash: with
Restart=on-failure, a clean operator-initiated stop is not automatically restarted.
In systemd, Restart=on-failure covers nonzero exits, qualifying abnormal signals, and timeout or watchdog failures. It is not the same policy as Restart=always. RestartSec= sets how long systemd waits before restarting; the 5s value shown above is only an example, not a universal recommendation. See the systemd service documentation.
Loop a local sleep-sounds file
For a local file that should repeat, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping. Put it before the corresponding -i, as in the example. The -re option reads the file at its native rate, which is useful when pacing file input as a live stream. These options handle file looping and pacing, not a crashed process. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Keep FFmpeg from waiting for terminal input
Include -nostdin for unattended operation so FFmpeg does not check console input. FFmpeg’s FAQ also describes redirecting standard input to /dev/null on Linux and macOS or NUL on Windows as an alternative. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Handle a disconnected network input
If FFmpeg remains running but its network input disconnects, a service restart policy alone may do nothing because the process has not exited. For supported HTTP inputs, FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and retry-delay or retry-limit controls. These are input protocol options, not universal switches for every protocol, and they do not supervise a process that has already exited.

For example, FFmpeg describes reconnect as reconnecting when disconnected before EOF, and reconnect_at_eof can treat EOF as an error and reconnect, useful for live or endless streams. Check the option support and behavior for your actual input in the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Recover from a failed network output
If the output connection fails while FFmpeg is still processing, the FIFO muxer offers a recovery mechanism for some output setups. FFmpeg documents attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and retry and queue controls; its example uses the FIFO muxer for RTMP output and retries on a one-second interval. That example is not a universal setting for every destination.

Queue behavior matters: dropping packets when the queue overflows lets processing continue but loses stream content. Without packet dropping, a full queue can block encoding. Choose based on whether continuity or preserving every packet matters more for your stream. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Detect a silent or frozen stream
A process that stays alive while audio stops is outside the basic scope of Restart=on-failure. You need a health check that measures the output or detects lack of progress, then restarts the service if the failure condition is met. The suitable check and threshold depend on the destination and deployment; there is no universally applicable command or threshold established here. Avoid restarting solely because a quiet sleep-sounds passage has low volume: monitor a signal that distinguishes intentional silence from a stalled stream.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- systemd does not restart FFmpeg: Check whether FFmpeg exited with a failure status or qualifying signal. A clean stop is not restarted by
on-failure; inspect the unit status and logs to see the actual exit reason. - FFmpeg restarts but the stream still does not resume: The failure may be a source or output connection that leaves FFmpeg alive, or a silent stall. Configure the relevant protocol recovery or a separate health check rather than relying only on process supervision.
- The local file ends instead of looping: Check that
-stream_loop -1appears before the input’s-i. - The background process appears suspended or waits unexpectedly: Use
-nostdinor redirect standard input appropriately for the operating system. - Recovery flags are rejected or ignored: Verify the protocol and options against the deployed FFmpeg build. Online manuals track current documentation, while an installed binary may be older or built without the relevant protocol support.
- Output recovery loses content or stalls: Review the FIFO queue policy. Dropping on overflow can lose packets; a full queue without dropping can block encoding.
