First confirm your channel can livestream and that you have the rights to every sound and image. For a do-it-yourself setup, create a stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Plan shorter sessions if you want YouTube archives: streams over 12 hours may not be captured.
Before you start: eligibility, content and equipment
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Check your channel’s eligibility and restrictions before preparing a long broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements describe the current requirements.
Prepare audio and visuals you can use
Use rain and thunder recordings, background visuals, artwork, and any other material that you created or are properly licensed to use. Keep the license or other permission records. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content; a match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. If you have permission to use material that is claimed, ask its owner about adding your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains the process.
Choose an encoder and computer
The encoder method requires a computer capable of running your chosen encoder. YouTube does not specify a universal computer requirement for this workflow; check the encoder’s current system requirements. A microphone, camera, capture card, or dedicated rain-sound machine is not established as necessary for a pre-produced ambience stream. You can send a prepared audio-and-visual program rather than capture a live room. YouTube’s encoder overview describes the workflow and possible equipment.

Set up the YouTube stream with an encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow the on-screen setup for the broadcast.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions say: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in your encoder and do not share it publicly. Use the stream-specific key and connection details YouTube provides.
- Configure the program. Add your rain-and-thunder audio and visuals in the encoder, following that encoder’s instructions. Set audio levels so thunder peaks do not distort and rain remains audible. Use the output settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance; the sources here do not establish one universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting for every encoder and connection.
- Start sending, then go live. Start the encoder’s stream output. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, check that audio and visuals are present, then select the option to go live in YouTube. Confirm the broadcast is actually live before leaving the setup.
Plan for continuous playback and archive limits
“24/7” describes the intended continuous programming, not a guarantee that one YouTube session will stay connected or be archived forever. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If a recording matters, keep sessions below that threshold and make a local recording as backup. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup.
For a schedule made of shorter sessions, plan how you will restart the encoder and create the next broadcast. YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise an uninterrupted handoff between separate sessions, so test the restart process before relying on it. A continuous connection can also fail because of the computer, encoder, power, or network; monitor the stream if you choose a local setup.

Copyright and monetization are separate checks
Having permission to use a recording does not automatically make a stream eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams, and its July 15, 2025 policy update says repetitive or mass-produced material is treated as “inauthentic content.” Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement: a license or lack of a copyright claim does not guarantee monetization approval. Make the soundscape and visual treatment meaningfully original rather than presenting a minimally changed copy of another creator’s work as your own. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies and current YouTube Partner Program requirements before planning revenue.
YouTube’s live-stream terms also require providers to represent that they hold the necessary rights for live and archived material. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service alongside any licenses that apply to your content.

Common problems and what to check
- Live Control Room will not let you start: verify channel eligibility, age requirements, and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction.
- YouTube receives no signal: check that the encoder is sending, and re-enter the correct server URL and stream key from the stream setup. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
- Preview has no sound or picture: confirm the correct audio and visual sources are enabled in the encoder and that the preview is receiving them before going live.
- A copyright notice interrupts the stream: remove or replace the matched material. If you hold a license, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; permission alone may not stop an automated interruption.
- The archive is missing: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions and keep a local recording when preservation matters.
- Monetization is unavailable or removed: check current Partner Program eligibility and the inauthentic- and reused-content policies. Rights clearance is not a substitute for those policy requirements.
