First identify what ended: a prerecorded file reached EOF, a network input disconnected, the YouTube output failed, or the FFmpeg process exited. Each needs a different recovery method. For a finite ambience file you want to repeat, use FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1; to relaunch an exited FFmpeg process on Linux, run it under systemd with an appropriate restart policy. Neither method alone confirms that YouTube has resumed the broadcast.
Identify what stopped
Check FFmpeg’s output and logs before changing the command. “The stream ended” can describe four distinct events:
- Input file EOF: a prerecorded ambience video or audio file played to its end.
- Input disconnect: a network source dropped or reached EOF.
- Output failure: FFmpeg is still running, but publishing to YouTube encountered a temporary error.
- Process exit: FFmpeg stopped running, either cleanly or with an error.
Looping a file, retrying a protocol connection, recovering an output, and restarting a process work at different layers. Choose the method that matches the event.
Repeat a prerecorded ambience file at EOF
If the source is a finite file and the intention is to keep replaying it, add -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i. FFmpeg documents this option as setting how many times an input is looped; -1 means loop indefinitely. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i ambience.mp4 [your existing output options] "YOUR_YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the bracketed portion with the output options your existing command requires, and use the RTMP URL and stream key shown in your YouTube live-stream settings. Keep -stream_loop -1 before the -i for the file it applies to: FFmpeg options are position-sensitive. If your command has multiple inputs, place the option before the relevant input rather than assuming it applies globally.
This prevents normal EOF on that input; it does not relaunch FFmpeg if the process crashes, nor does it by itself restore a failed YouTube connection. Verify the behavior with your exact command and installed FFmpeg build. The online manual may track a newer revision than the version on your system.

Reconnect a supported network input
When the input is a network stream rather than a local file, FFmpeg has protocol-specific reconnection options. The HTTP protocol documentation distinguishes reconnect, which reconnects after a disconnection before EOF, from reconnect_at_eof, which treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection; FFmpeg describes the latter as useful for live or endless streams. The same documentation lists controls for network errors, HTTP errors, retry counts, and retry delays. See FFmpeg protocol options.
These are options for supported protocols, not universal switches for every input type. Consult the protocol section for your actual input and the installed FFmpeg version before adding them. They address input retrieval; they do not restart a process that has exited or guarantee that YouTube accepts the output.

Recover a temporary output failure inside FFmpeg
If FFmpeg remains running but its publishing output temporarily fails, the FIFO pseudo-muxer offers output recovery options such as attempt_recovery and a recovery wait. FFmpeg’s documentation includes an example that continues real-time processing while retrying a network output. See FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.
Check the exact FIFO options and example syntax against your installed version. Recovery may mean packets are dropped or delayed, depending on configuration. It cannot repair a persistently invalid command, incorrect stream key, unavailable input, or continuing network failure.

Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd
On Linux, systemd can supervise FFmpeg and relaunch it after qualifying failures. The service must run FFmpeg as its main process rather than launching it as an unmanaged background job from a shell. A practical guide to the service approach is available at LinuxBabe’s systemd service guide; confirm directives and behavior for your Linux distribution and installed systemd version.
Choose the restart policy
Restart=on-failureretries qualifying failures, but does not restart a clean exit.Restart=alwaysalso restarts after a clean exit.- Add a deliberate
RestartSec=delay so an immediate failure does not trigger a rapid restart loop.
Use on-failure if a clean FFmpeg exit should stay stopped; use always if any exit should relaunch it. A service manager can repeat a persistent error indefinitely, so a service showing as restarted is not proof that the underlying problem is fixed.

Check service logs after a restart
Inspect the unit’s logs with journalctl, for example:
journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service -b
Replace your-ffmpeg-service.service with your unit name. Look for the first error before each exit—such as an invalid option, unreadable file, or failed output connection—instead of assuming each relaunch restored the stream.
Confirm the YouTube broadcast separately
Starting FFmpeg again only shows that the local process launched. It does not establish that YouTube resumed the same broadcast, preserved continuity, or made it publicly live. After recovery, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Treat this as an operational check, not a platform guarantee: the available practical guidance does not establish exactly how YouTube will handle every interrupted broadcast.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely layer | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg stops when a local file finishes | Input EOF | Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant file’s -i if it should repeat. |
| A network source disconnects or reaches EOF | Input protocol | Check that protocol’s documented reconnect options; reconnect and reconnect_at_eof cover different conditions. |
| FFmpeg is running but publishing has a temporary error | Output | Check FIFO recovery options for the installed version and inspect whether packet loss or delay is acceptable. |
| The FFmpeg process has exited | Process supervision | Check service logs, restart policy, delay, command, and credentials; systemd cannot correct a persistent configuration error. |
| FFmpeg restarted but the broadcast is not visibly live | YouTube state | Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health rather than inferring recovery from the local process state. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded ambience videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids maintaining FFmpeg on a home computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
