To stop clipping, reduce the level at the earliest point where the thunder signal overloads, then put an OBS limiter last in that audio source’s filter chain to catch any remaining peaks. A limiter cannot repair distortion that has already happened upstream. Check the loudest thunder passage in OBS and in a test recording before leaving the stream unattended.
Find where the distortion starts
Digital audio reaches its maximum representable level at 0 dBFS. If the signal delivered to the stream or recording exceeds that ceiling, it can clip and sound distorted. OBS can process audio internally above 0 dBFS, but that does not make an over-level output safe. OBS’s audio guidance recommends listening at the source and again through OBS monitoring, then reviewing a recording.
- In OBS, identify the exact audio source carrying the thunder and rain loop.
- Play the loudest thunder passage. Watch that source’s mixer meter and note its peak-hold marker, which retains the loudest level for 20 seconds.
- Listen to the source or device monitor before OBS, if available. If distortion is already audible there, the overload is upstream. If it sounds clean there but distorted through OBS or in the recording, continue checking downstream levels and processing.
OBS documents -9 dBFS as the permitted maximum reference for its sample peak meter, accounting for meter and alignment uncertainty. Treat that as a meter reference, not as a target for average loudness. Read OBS’s audio metering guidance.
Lower the signal where it first becomes too hot
Trace the audio path from the recording to OBS. Depending on your setup, the relevant control may be the audio file or player, an interface or mixer, an operating-system level, an application volume control, or an OBS control. Reduce the level at the earliest stage where the signal is too hot, then listen again as it reaches OBS.

- If the source or device monitor is already distorted, lower that source’s playback level or the relevant device, interface, or mixer gain.
- If the source is clean but becomes too loud later in the path, adjust the applicable operating-system, application, or OBS level.
- Do not rely on pulling down a later OBS fader to fix distortion already baked into the source or created by an overloaded device input.
There is no single gain value that fits every recording or setup. The right adjustment depends on where the distortion begins, so use the loudest real thunder passage to verify it.
Add an OBS limiter to catch remaining peaks
In OBS, open the audio source’s filters and add a Limiter. Place it last in that source’s filter chain: OBS says the limiter should be the final filter. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and a 60 ms release. These are starting defaults, not guaranteed ideal settings for every storm recording. See the OBS Limiter Filter documentation.

- Open the mixer’s menu for the thunder-and-rain source and choose Filters.
- Add a Limiter filter to the source.
- Move the limiter to the end of the filter chain.
- Play the loudest thunder passage and listen for harsh flattening or pumping. Adjust the settings with that passage rather than assuming the defaults suit the recording.
A limiter catches peaks that reach it; it does not undo clipping earlier in the path. If the source is already distorted, return to the upstream level controls.
Use compression only if broader dynamics need control
A compressor reduces signal above its threshold, so it can smooth larger loudness swings. It is optional for ambient rain and thunder: aggressive compression may flatten the thunder and make the storm sound less natural. If you use one, OBS generally places it near the beginning of the filter chain, before other processing such as the final limiter.

OBS documents a compressor default of a -18.00 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, and 60 ms release. Those defaults describe the filter, not a recommended storm-stream preset. Compare the processed sound with the compressor bypassed and keep it only if it improves the listening result. See the OBS Compressor Filter documentation.
Do not mistake an expander for a clipping fix
An expander can attenuate low-level unwanted computer noise, but it will not stop loud thunder from clipping. OBS places an expander after compression and other effects, but before the limiter. If its threshold is too high, it can also turn down wanted quiet rain. See the OBS Expander Filter documentation.

Make a recording and check it before going live unattended
Once the levels and filters are set, make a representative OBS recording that includes the loudest thunder. Listen back for distortion, flattened transients, or pumping; a meter alone cannot tell you whether the result sounds natural. Repeat the check when you replace the loop, change gains or filters, or reroute the audio. Headphones can help with monitoring, but they are a diagnostic aid, not a clipping fix.
