How to Restart MongoDB on a Linux VPS

Use sudo systemctl restart mongod on a systemd-based VPS, then verify the unit, test a local connection, and inspect journalctl or /var/log/mongodb/mongod.log if startup fails.

On a package-managed MongoDB installation running under systemd, restart the database with:

sudo systemctl restart mongod

Immediately confirm that it came back:

systemctl status mongod

A restart briefly terminates the mongod process, so applications using that VPS may lose their database connection until they reconnect. The commands below cover verification, logs, boot-time startup, missing service units, and older Linux init systems.

What you need to check before restarting

The command is correct only when MongoDB is managed by a systemd unit named mongod. That is the usual arrangement when MongoDB Community or Enterprise was installed from an official package on a current Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL-derived, or Amazon Linux release. A manually extracted binary, a container, or a custom unit can use a different process and service name.

  • Have a shell session with an account allowed to use sudo.
  • Warn users or pause jobs that depend on the database if a short interruption is unacceptable.
  • Confirm which service your application uses. A host can contain more than one MongoDB instance, each with its own unit, configuration, data directory, and port.
  • Do not treat a restart as a backup. A restart does not create a copy of your data or repair damaged files.

If you do not know the unit name, list likely units before taking action:

systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i mongo

On some installations the visible unit is mongod.service; mongod is the short name accepted by systemctl.

Restart MongoDB with systemd

Run the restart as root through sudo:

  1. Connect to the VPS over SSH or use its console.
  2. Execute sudo systemctl restart mongod.
  3. Wait for the command to return. A successful restart normally produces no output; no output alone does not prove that MongoDB is healthy.
  4. Run the status check in the next section before sending traffic back to the database.
sudo systemctl restart mongod

MongoDB’s systemd documentation identifies systemctl as the management interface for package-installed MongoDB Community and Enterprise deployments. The restart operation stops the current process and starts it again using the unit’s configured command line and configuration file.

Verify that the service is running

Check the unit immediately after restarting:

systemctl status mongod

If your account cannot read the unit details, add sudo:

sudo systemctl status mongod

Look for Active: active (running). The status output also shows the main process ID, when the service started, recent unit messages, and the command systemd used. A state such as failed, inactive, or a rapid restart loop means the process did not remain running; move to the log checks rather than repeatedly issuing restart commands.

For a concise machine-readable result, query the active state:

systemctl is-active mongod

An output of active means systemd considers the unit running. It does not verify that an application can authenticate or perform a query, so use a local client check when you need an end-to-end test.

Confirm MongoDB accepts a local connection

After the unit is active, test from the VPS itself with mongosh:

mongosh

The shell uses its default local connection behavior. MongoDB’s Amazon Linux guidance describes this same-host test and identifies TCP port 27017 as the default MongoDB port. Your deployment may override the port, bind address, TLS requirement, or authentication settings, so a connection failure does not automatically mean systemd failed.

If authentication is enabled, provide the credentials and authentication database required by your configuration rather than assuming an unauthenticated shell will work. If the server is bound only to localhost, a remote client will not connect even while local mongosh succeeds. Conversely, opening a bind address or firewall port solely to make a test pass can expose the database; keep the existing security policy and test with the same network path your application uses.

Read the logs when the restart fails

Inspect the systemd journal

Read all messages recorded for the unit:

sudo journalctl -u mongod

To focus on the current boot and avoid scrolling through older incidents, add -b:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo journalctl -u mongod -b

To watch new messages while attempting another start, follow the journal in one terminal:

sudo journalctl -u mongod -f

In a second terminal, run:

sudo systemctl restart mongod

Read the first substantive error, not only the final systemd summary. Messages commonly identify whether the configured executable, data path, configuration file, socket, or port prevented startup. Preserve the exact error before changing files; it is useful when escalating to your host or database administrator.

Check MongoDB’s package log

Package installations commonly write MongoDB messages to:

/var/log/mongodb/mongod.log

Display the most recent entries:

sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/mongodb/mongod.log

Follow the file while reproducing the problem:

sudo tail -f /var/log/mongodb/mongod.log

The file may not exist when logging has been redirected to journald, the package uses another path, or the service has never started successfully. Use the path specified by the unit or its MongoDB configuration instead of creating a second log location at random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the failure message to choose the next check

  • Configuration error: inspect the referenced configuration file and the exact line or option named in the log. Correct the syntax or value, then restart once.
  • Permission or ownership error: verify that the account running mongod can read its configuration and write the configured data and log directories. Do not broadly grant write access to the entire filesystem.
  • Address already in use: identify the process holding the configured port and determine whether another MongoDB instance or an unrelated service is using it before stopping anything.
  • Storage or filesystem error: check free space and whether the data volume is mounted read-write. Resolve the storage condition before attempting another start.
  • Immediate exit with no useful status text: compare the journal and package log timestamps, then inspect the unit’s command and environment with systemctl cat mongod.

These checks diagnose the reason reported by your host; they do not replace MongoDB’s recovery procedures for data corruption or replica-set incidents.

Fix “Unit mongod.service not found”

If systemd returns Unit mongod.service not found, first make sure the package or custom unit was actually installed on this VPS and that the name is not different. A newly installed or newly created unit can also be absent from systemd’s in-memory unit list.

  1. Reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
  1. Retry the service operation:
sudo systemctl restart mongod

If the unit still cannot be found, list installed definitions again:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i mongo

Possible results include a custom name such as mongodb.service, a templated unit, or no service at all because MongoDB was launched manually. Use the exact unit name shown by the host. Do not create a replacement unit until you know the existing executable, configuration file, data directory, and user account; an incorrect unit can start a second instance against the same data files.

Use the older System V command when systemd is not in use

Some older Linux VPS images use System V init scripts instead of systemd. On those systems, the equivalent command is:

sudo service mongod restart

Check its result with:

sudo service mongod status

The service name can still differ, so inspect the available scripts if that command reports that the service is unknown. Amazon Linux documentation describes this service form for older init arrangements and recommends checking the MongoDB log for startup errors.

Do not mix management commands blindly. Running service mongod restart on a systemd host may be compatibility-wrapped, while a custom script can have behavior that differs from the native unit. Determine the init system first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ps -p 1 -o comm=

An output of systemd indicates the systemd path. Other init programs require the management method supplied by that operating system image.

Make MongoDB start after a VPS reboot

Restarting now and starting automatically at boot are separate actions. To enable the existing systemd unit for future boots, run:

sudo systemctl enable mongod

enable changes boot-time configuration; it does not necessarily start the process in your current session. To enable it and start it immediately, use:

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
sudo systemctl enable --now mongod

Verify both the current state and the enablement:

systemctl is-active mongod
systemctl is-enabled mongod

The first command should report active; the second should report enabled. If the unit is custom or the host uses System V init, follow that system’s boot configuration rather than applying a systemd command to a nonexistent unit.

Understand the differences between common VPS setups

The correct restart procedure depends on more than the Linux distribution. Compare the init system, installation source, unit name, and log destination:

Deployment characteristic What to use What to verify
Official package on a systemd host sudo systemctl restart mongod systemctl status mongod; journal and package log
Older System V image sudo service mongod restart Service status and the configured MongoDB log
Custom package or manually created unit The exact unit name shown by systemctl list-unit-files systemctl cat <unit> for its command, user, and configuration
Manual binary or container The supervisor or container runtime that launched it That runtime’s process list and logs; mongod may not be a systemd unit

A package-managed service normally has predictable integration with systemd and a standard log path, while a manual deployment can place the configuration, data, and logs anywhere. Never infer the data directory from the service name alone.

Restart safely in an operational workflow

For a production VPS, use a short, repeatable sequence rather than a restart loop:

  1. Record the reason for the restart and check whether an application deployment, backup, or replication operation is in progress.
  2. Run systemctl status mongod to capture the pre-restart state and recent messages.
  3. Issue sudo systemctl restart mongod once.
  4. Confirm Active: active (running) and review the journal for errors.
  5. Run a local mongosh connection or the application’s own health check.
  6. Monitor the application for reconnect errors before declaring the maintenance complete.

If the service fails, stop repeating the restart. Each attempt can add noise to the logs and can obscure the original failure. Capture the journal, the MongoDB log, the unit name, and the time of the incident, then correct the reported cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using mongodb when the unit is mongod: the process is commonly managed as mongod, but custom packages may choose another name. Verify rather than guessing.
  • Assuming a successful command means a healthy database: systemctl restart can return before you have checked whether the new process stayed alive.
  • Checking only the application log: systemd’s journal and MongoDB’s own log often contain the startup error first.
  • Forgetting boot enablement: a manually started service can work now and remain disabled for the next VPS reboot.
  • Testing remotely by opening the database to the internet: use the existing bind, firewall, TLS, and authentication configuration; a local test is safer for isolating service health.
  • Running repair or deleting lock files as a first response: those actions can worsen a database problem. Follow the specific error and an appropriate MongoDB recovery plan.
