Set membership levels in YouTube Studio on a computer: go to Earn > Memberships > Edit under “Step 1: Add levels and perks,” create your tiers, review the perks each level promises, and publish. YouTube allows up to six levels with one to five perks per level. Memberships are separate from keeping a livestream running 24/7.
Before you create membership levels
First check YouTube’s channel-membership eligibility, location availability, and policy requirements. Availability depends on both the channel and creator’s location, so use the eligibility information shown in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the feature is available to every channel.
Plan only perks you can deliver reliably. YouTube reviews levels and perks against its policies before they go live; its current help instructions estimate that review takes about a day. Perks are your responsibility to provide.
How to add and publish membership levels
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio and select Earn from the left menu.
- Select Memberships.
- In Step 1: Add levels and perks, select Edit.
- Create up to six levels at different prices. Add one to five perks to each level.
- Review how the perks stack: each higher-priced level includes the perks from every lower-priced level as well as its own additions.
- When the tiers and promises are ready, publish them. Allow about a day for YouTube’s review, according to its current help page.
How to design tiers viewers can understand
YouTube’s pricing guidance says many creators start with one to three price levels; this is a suggestion, not a limit or requirement. Start with a tier structure that is easy to explain and sustain, then add levels only when they offer a clear additional benefit.

YouTube lists examples such as badges, posts, custom emoji, members-first videos, live chat, members-only livestreams, milestone chats, a member recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. For members-only posts, creators can choose access for all members or selected levels. Check the applicable channel-membership policies before promising a perk.
You can edit perks. YouTube’s pricing guidance says you may adjust prices for new members once every 12 months after the prior price update; existing members remain at their original price. Treat that timing as a platform rule and plan price changes carefully.

What happens if you remove a level?
Deleting a level also deletes all members at that level. They immediately lose access to its perks and receive a refund of their last month’s payment. Before removing a tier, review its active membership and consider whether a different change would preserve members’ access.
Membership levels are not the same as an always-on stream
A membership is a paid access level with benefits; setting up levels does not make a channel livestream 24/7 or configure its stream. You can, however, keep a livestream public while limiting who can participate in its chat.

Keep the video public and make chat members-only
- In YouTube Studio, create or reuse a livestream.
- Open the stream’s settings.
- Under Live chat, choose Enable members-only chat.
- Save the setting.
With members-only chat enabled, everyone can still watch the public stream, but only members can post messages. This is different from a members-only livestream, which is itself restricted to members at the appropriate levels. YouTube documents both options in its guidance for members-only live chat and livestreams.
