To restart Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon, start the game and, after the Nintendo 3DS logo appears but before the title screen, hold Up on the D-pad, B, and X together. Confirm the prompt only if you want to erase the save: Nintendo’s manuals warn that the deleted data cannot be recovered.
How to restart Pokémon Sun or Moon
- Launch the game on your Nintendo 3DS and wait for the Nintendo 3DS logo to appear on the top screen.
- Before the game’s title screen appears, hold Up on the D-pad, B, and X at the same time.
- When prompted, confirm that you want to erase the saved data. If you do not want to lose the existing save, cancel or do not confirm.
The manuals for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon specify the same startup timing and button combination. They do not establish a five-second duration; the important cue is the window between the 3DS logo and the title screen.

What is erased—and can you keep a second save?
Erasing the save permanently removes its Pokémon, items, and settings. Nintendo’s manuals state that once saved data is erased, it cannot be recovered. Nintendo also says these games allow one saved game file, so you cannot preserve the current in-game save as a second file while beginning a new playthrough. Nintendo’s save guidance for Pokémon Sun and Moon explains the one-file rule.
Can you back up the save first?
Nintendo’s general Nintendo 3DS Save-Data Backup feature does not back up retail 3DS software; Nintendo’s support page says retail game saves are stored on the game card. Do not assume that feature can restore a deleted retail copy’s save. Nintendo’s 3DS Save-Data Backup guidance describes the feature’s limits.

Do not use the console’s software-deletion menu
You do not need to delete the game or its software data from the 3DS system settings to restart it. Nintendo warns that deleting downloaded software can also delete associated save data unless it has been backed up. That is a separate console-management action, not the game-specific reset above.
