Its followers claim cosmic authority from the Greater Will, whose messages are delivered through the Two Fingers and interpreted by Finger Readers. But the Golden Order is not the only belief in the Lands Between—and by the time the game begins, its authority has fractured.
What is the Golden Order?
The Golden Order is more than a private faith: it is the dominant religious and political order of the Lands Between. Queen Marika’s divine status, the Elden Ring’s laws, and the Erdtree’s presence reinforce its authority. Bandai Namco’s official synopsis opens with the declaration, “The Golden Order has been broken,” placing the crisis at the heart of the game’s setting: Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring synopsis.
Grace, royal succession, churches, and religious interpreters all give the Order a presence in everyday life. Its central claim is that the world’s proper structure is grounded in the Elden Ring. That makes disputes over the Ring disputes over the rules by which the world is governed.
Who do the Two Fingers worship, and what is the Greater Will?
The Greater Will is the remote cosmic authority claimed by the Golden Order. Official descriptions connect it to the Shattering in stark terms: “A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will.” The publisher’s official synopsis also describes the demigods’ conflict as occurring after the Lands Between were abandoned by the Greater Will’s “golden guidance.”

The game’s lore presents the Two Fingers as envoys of the Greater Will. They serve as intermediaries rather than as the ultimate object of devotion; Finger Readers interpret their signs for Tarnished and others. The Greater Will does not appear as a speaking character in the cited lore accounts, so its intentions reach people through institutions and interpretation, not direct conversation.
What are the Elden Ring and the Erdtree’s religious roles?
The Elden Ring is both a powerful object and the foundation of Order: it embodies or defines the principles governing the world. Lore describes the Elden Beast as a vassal that became the Elden Ring, joining the Ring’s cosmic significance to the Greater Will’s authority. The Erdtree, meanwhile, is the faith’s most visible sacred presence, bound to the Golden Order’s account of grace and legitimate rule.

- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
Because the Ring establishes the world’s order, changing it is not simply a matter of repairing an artifact. It can alter the principles under which the Lands Between exist. That is why the player’s eventual choice of ending has theological consequences as well as political ones.
Why is the Golden Order in crisis?
After the Elden Ring is shattered, demigods take its Great Runes and wage war over the resulting power. The official Bandai Namco Europe synopsis describes demigods holding shards of the Ring as they fight over the ruins of a realm abandoned by the Greater Will’s guidance. The Tarnished are drawn into this struggle, with the possibility of becoming Elden Lord.

The Three Fingers and the Frenzied Flame offer the most direct challenge to the Golden Order. Where the Order’s system preserves distinctions, hierarchy, and an ordered world, the Frenzied Flame points toward undoing those divisions in a return to undivided unity. It rejects the dominant order’s account of reality rather than simply proposing a new ruler within it.

This contrast shapes the stakes of the player’s choice: preserve or reshape the system associated with Marika, or reject it in favor of a rival cosmic power. The game dramatizes that choice through its endings, while leaving room for interpretation about the true nature and intentions of the powers involved.
Is the Golden Order the only religion in Elden Ring?
No. It is the dominant religion and political order, but the Lands Between contain other rites, cults, factions, and traditions connected to distinct powers and cosmologies. “The religion of Elden Ring” is therefore most accurately understood as the Golden Order at the center of the setting, surrounded by competing beliefs—not as a single universal faith followed unquestioningly by everyone.
The game also leaves aspects of its theology ambiguous. Its explicit statements establish what institutions and characters claim; they do not settle every question about whether the Fingers still receive genuine instructions or what the Greater Will ultimately intends.
