To restore a MySQL database in phpMyAdmin, select the destination database, open Import (called SQL on some older installations), choose your dump file, and click Go. A dump may contain the database structure, the data, or both. If the browser cannot accept the file because of PHP limits or timeouts, use phpMyAdmin’s configured server-side UploadDir or import the file with the MySQL command-line client.

What a MySQL restore actually uses
phpMyAdmin does not recreate a database from a proprietary project file. The restore artifact is a SQL dump: a text file containing SQL statements that rebuild tables, insert rows, and, when included, recreate views, triggers, indexes, or other database objects. An export can contain structure only, data only, or structure and data together, so check what was included before you import it.

The phpMyAdmin project describes the purpose this way: “SQL can be used to make any manipulation on data, it is also useful for restoring backed up data.” The practical implication is that the dump must be suitable for the destination server and the account used for the import. A file that contains only table definitions will not restore missing rows; a data-only file may fail if the required tables do not already exist.
Prepare the destination before importing
Confirm the dump and its scope
- Keep the original dump unchanged and work from a copy if you need to edit or inspect it.
- Identify whether it contains structure, data, or both. The opening statements and table definitions usually make this clear.
- Record the intended database name and the MySQL server that should receive the data. Selecting the wrong database is the most consequential choice in the phpMyAdmin workflow.
Check MySQL-version compatibility
Dumps are SQL text, but SQL accepted by one MySQL generation is not guaranteed to be accepted by another. The phpMyAdmin documentation specifically calls out problems when importing dumps from versions before 5.7.6 into MySQL 5.7.7 or later. Compare the source and destination server versions and inspect version-specific statements before attempting a production restore. If the servers differ, test the import against a non-production copy first.

Make sure the account can perform the work
The phpMyAdmin login must have the privileges required by the statements in the dump. A dump that creates tables, views, triggers, or other objects can require more authority than one that only inserts rows. If the import reports an access-denied error, the problem is permission-related rather than a damaged upload; ask the database administrator to grant the needed rights or run the restore with an appropriately privileged account.
Protect the existing database
Restoring into a populated database can produce conflicts with existing tables, keys, or objects, depending on the statements in the dump. Confirm the destination with the application owner and retain a current backup of any data that must not be overwritten. For a recovery exercise, a separate test database lets you validate the dump without changing the live application.

- Sign in to phpMyAdmin. Use the installation connected to the MySQL server that should receive the restore.
- Select the destination database. In the left navigation panel, click the database name before opening any import controls. Do not begin from a server-wide screen if you need the dump loaded into one particular database.
- Open the import control. Click the Import tab. Older phpMyAdmin installations may label the equivalent screen SQL.
- Choose the dump. Use the file selector to select the SQL file. Form-based imports support SQL and, where the installation has the relevant support enabled, compressed files such as
.sql.gzand.sql.bz2. - Submit the import. Click Go. phpMyAdmin sends the file to MySQL and executes the statements it contains. Leave the page open until phpMyAdmin reports completion or an error.
- Read the result page. Treat warnings and errors as part of the restore result, not as harmless status text. Note the statement or object named in an error before deciding whether to retry.
Some installations also support dragging the dump file into the browser window. This is still an Import operation; you must have selected the destination database first. The exact drag-and-drop behavior depends on the phpMyAdmin version and browser, so the file selector remains the dependable fallback.
Use UploadDir when the browser cannot transfer the dump
phpMyAdmin can be configured with a server-side upload directory, exposed in its configuration as $cfg['UploadDir']. When this feature is enabled, place the dump in that directory using the server’s normal file-transfer method, then open the destination database and the Import tab. The file can be selected from the server-side list rather than uploaded through the browser’s HTTP form.

UploadDir is useful when the file is already on the database server or when a normal browser upload repeatedly hits a size limit. It still executes the SQL through phpMyAdmin, so the destination, database privileges, SQL compatibility, and execution time remain relevant. Remove or secure the server-side copy according to your organization’s retention policy after the restore is complete.
Import from the MySQL command line
If shell access is available, the MySQL command-line client is the alternative for a dump that is too large or slow for a browser request. A typical invocation is:

The client prompts for the password rather than placing it directly in the command. Run the command on a host that can reach the MySQL server, and make sure the account has the privileges required by the dump.
The command-line route avoids the browser’s file-upload form and is easier to place in a repeatable operations procedure. It does not remove SQL compatibility problems or permission requirements: a statement rejected by the destination server will still fail, and the command’s output should be captured for diagnosis.

Choose the import method for your constraints

There is no universal timing or failure-rate advantage published for these methods. Choose based on the dump size, the access you actually have, the likelihood of an HTTP timeout, and whether you need a logged, repeatable operation.
Why a large SQL dump will not upload
PHP settings can reject a dump before MySQL receives it or interrupt the request while phpMyAdmin is processing it. The settings most relevant to submitted dumps are:

The exact values are controlled by the hosting environment and are not universal. If you administer the server, review these settings together rather than increasing only the upload limit. If you do not control PHP, ask the host or administrator whether they can adjust the limits for the restore window.
Use a different transfer path instead of forcing a browser upload
- Place the file in the configured
UploadDirand select it from phpMyAdmin’s Import screen. - If shell access is available, use the MySQL command-line client and capture its output.
- If neither option is available, obtain a smaller or appropriately prepared dump from the database administrator rather than repeatedly submitting a file that the server cannot accept.
Do not treat a page that stops responding as proof of success. Reopen the database and perform the verification checks below before allowing an application to use the restored data.

Verify that the restore is complete
phpMyAdmin’s success message confirms that the request reached the application, not that every business requirement has been met. Verification is an operational step because the available documentation does not define one universal checklist or publish a success-rate statistic.
- Tables: Confirm that the expected table names appear in the destination database.
- Rows: Check representative row counts or other known totals against the source record. A structure-only dump should not be expected to contain rows.
- Views: Open or query each required view and check for errors caused by missing tables or incompatible syntax.
- Triggers: Confirm that expected triggers exist and are associated with the intended tables.
- Application connection: Point a test instance or maintenance copy of the application at the restored database and exercise a read path before reconnecting production traffic.
- Errors and warnings: Review the import result for failed statements, skipped objects, or permission errors. One failed statement can matter even when most tables were created.
If the application cannot connect after an apparently successful import, separate database-content checks from connection checks. Verify that the application is using the intended database and account, then investigate credentials and privileges rather than importing the same dump repeatedly.
Troubleshoot common restore failures
The Import tab is missing
Older installations may call the control SQL instead of Import. First select the database in the left navigation panel, then look for either label. If neither is available, the hosting provider may have restricted the feature or exposed only a server-level SQL interface; an administrator will need to change the configuration or perform the restore.
“File too large” or an empty upload result
Check upload_max_filesize and post_max_size, remembering that the latter must be larger. Also review memory_limit and max_execution_time for failures that occur after transfer. Use UploadDir or the command-line client when changing PHP settings is not possible.

The request times out partway through
A timeout indicates that the browser request did not complete reliably; it is not a safe success signal. Check whether tables and rows were created, then use UploadDir or the command-line client for a controlled retry. Avoid launching repeated imports into the same destination without checking what the first attempt changed.
SQL syntax or version errors appear
Compare source and destination MySQL versions, especially when the dump came from a release before 5.7.6 and the target is 5.7.7 or newer. Inspect the failing statement for version-specific syntax and test a compatible export or destination before trying production again.

The account may not have the privilege required by that statement. Ask the database administrator to use an account with the necessary rights or to adjust privileges, then rerun the restore according to the administrator’s recovery plan.
Compressed files are rejected
Form-based import supports compressed formats such as .sql.gz and .sql.bz2 where that support is enabled. If the installation does not recognize the format, decompress the file before importing or use a command-line workflow that can read the decompressed SQL.
Tables already exist or objects conflict
Those messages usually mean the destination is not in the state expected by the dump. Stop and determine whether the restore is meant to replace existing objects, add missing data, or populate a separate database. Do not delete or overwrite objects until the database owner has confirmed the recovery plan.
A safe repeatable restore procedure
- Keep the original dump and document its source server version, intended destination, and whether it includes structure, data, or both.
- Restore to a test database when the application or data is important enough that an import error would be disruptive.
- Select the destination database explicitly before choosing Import or SQL.
- Use browser upload only when the file and PHP limits make it realistic; otherwise choose UploadDir or the command-line client before starting.
- Record the completion message, warnings, and any failed statement.
- Verify tables, representative row counts, views, triggers, and application connectivity.
- Only after those checks pass, schedule the production cutover or reconnect the application.
This sequence keeps the restore artifact, destination choice, transfer method, and verification evidence together, making a failed attempt easier to diagnose and a successful one easier to repeat.
