If a PS5 became unstable, stopped booting, or failed an update after a jailbreak attempt, use Sony’s official recovery path and choose the least destructive option that matches the console’s current state. A console that still reaches the home screen is handled differently from one that only reaches Safe Mode, and neither situation guarantees that data or normal operation can be recovered. Do not install unofficial firmware or third-party update files.
Start by identifying what the PS5 can still do
The first decision is not which reset to select; it is whether the console reaches the home screen, Safe Mode, or neither. That distinction determines which recovery actions are available and how much risk you take with your data.

The PS5 reaches the home screen
Do not reset immediately. Disconnect any unofficial USB media, return the console to its ordinary configuration, and use the normal system-software update controls. If the console is unstable, back up saved data and copy any captures you can still access before attempting a more invasive repair. Sony’s official update guidance is available on its PS5 system software support page. A normal boot does not prove that a failed jailbreak attempt was harmless, so treat crashes, repeated update errors, missing storage, or unusual restarts as symptoms to document before changing settings.
The PS5 reaches Safe Mode
Safe Mode is the preferred official recovery environment when the operating system will not start normally. Connect the controller to the console with a USB data cable; wireless pairing is not available in Safe Mode. Choose an option based on the symptom and its data impact rather than selecting a reset by default.

The PS5 reaches neither the home screen nor Safe Mode
Try the Safe Mode startup sequence once more with the console fully powered off and a known-good power connection. If the second-beep sequence never appears, or the console powers off before the menu loads, stop trying unofficial files or repeated experimental procedures and use PlayStation Repairs and support. A failure to enter Safe Mode can indicate a hardware or storage fault that an update file cannot fix.
What Safe Mode options do
Sony lists several Safe Mode actions, and they are not interchangeable. The table below separates their purpose, data implications, and requirements. The labels can vary slightly by system language, so follow the wording displayed on your console.
| Safe Mode option | What it is for | Data impact stated by Sony | USB or computer required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Checks and repairs the console’s storage structure when storage errors or startup problems are suspected. | Sony says this does not erase data. | No. |
| Update System Software | Installs an update through the internet or, when selected, from USB storage. | The supplied Sony instructions do not promise data recovery or state that every failure is harmless. | Internet update: no. USB update: USB drive and computer. |
| Restore Default Settings | Returns settings to defaults without the same system-software replacement as a reinstall. | Sony says console storage content is preserved. | No. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database | Clears temporary cache data or rebuilds the content database when menus, indexing, or startup behavior is abnormal. | Review the on-screen warning before confirming; the supplied support text does not assign a universal data outcome to both sub-options. | No. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console using the reset procedure shown in Safe Mode. | Read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting; this is a destructive recovery branch rather than a routine update. | No, unless the console presents an additional update requirement. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Removes the existing PS5 system software and installs it again from the official reinstallation file. | Sony says reinstalling system software deletes all data on the PS5. | FAT32 or exFAT USB drive and a PC or Mac. |
The details above come from Sony’s Safe Mode instructions and its system-software recovery guidance. Do not treat “Repair Console Storage,” “Restore Default Settings,” and “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” as variations of the same command: the first two are specifically described as preserving storage content, while the reinstall explicitly deletes it.

Enter Safe Mode correctly
- Turn the PS5 off completely. If it is in Rest Mode, hold the power button until the console shuts down rather than selecting a menu restart.
- Press and hold the power button again. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep, which occurs several seconds after the first.
- Release the button after the second beep. The Safe Mode menu should appear on the connected display.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable, then press the PS button when prompted. A charge-only cable may fail here; use a cable that carries data.
Sony documents this sequence in its PS5 support information. If the screen remains blank, try another display input and cable, but do not interrupt a confirmed system-software installation by removing power.
Use the least destructive Safe Mode action first
Storage errors or a console that suddenly stopped starting
Select Repair Console Storage when the symptom points to a storage-structure problem and you want the lowest-risk repair. Sony states that this option does not erase data. It is not a jailbreak remover and it does not reinstall firmware; it repairs the storage structure that the existing system software uses. Let the process finish and restart normally before trying another option.
Settings corruption without a need to replace system software
Select Restore Default Settings when the console can reach Safe Mode but behaves incorrectly after configuration changes. Sony says this preserves the content stored on the console, but it returns settings to their defaults. Expect to configure network, display, user preferences, and other settings again. This option does not validate or restore unofficial software components.

Menu, indexing, or temporary-cache problems
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database contains maintenance actions aimed at temporary data and the content database. Use the on-screen description to select the sub-option that matches the symptom. The rebuild can take time, particularly on a nearly full drive; do not remove power while it runs. Because Sony’s supplied instructions do not give one blanket data statement for both sub-options, read every warning before confirming.
A failed or incomplete update
Choose Update System Software when the console can enter Safe Mode and the problem is an update that did not complete. An internet update is simplest if the network connection works. If the console cannot download or verify the update, use the manual USB method below. Updating is different from reinstalling: it uses the ordinary update package and is not the “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” command.
How to install a PS5 update from USB
Use this procedure only with the official Sony update file. Sony’s instructions require a PC or Mac and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The same support page contains the current download and warnings: How to update system software on a PS5 console.

- Back up any accessible saves, captures, or other data before changing system software. A USB update is not a guarantee that data will survive a console already damaged by a failed modification.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes files already on that drive, so copy them elsewhere first.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. Inside it, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s manual update file and save it inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP. - Check the spelling and capitalization. Sony’s instructions use uppercase letters for
PS5,UPDATE, andPS5UPDATE.PUP; an extra extension such as.PUP.PUPcan make the file invisible to the console. - Eject the drive safely from the computer. Plug it directly into the PS5, not through a hub or an unpowered extension.
- Start Safe Mode by holding the power button and releasing it after the second beep. Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device. Confirm only after the console displays the expected update file.
If the PS5 reports that it cannot find the update file, shut down and check the drive format, folder nesting, capitalization, filename, and whether the download completed. The required structure is USB root/PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; placing the file in a second nested PS5 folder will not work. Re-download from Sony if the file is incomplete, and do not substitute a package from a forum, mirror, or modified-firmware site.
Full system-software reinstallation is a last resort
Use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only after less destructive troubleshooting has failed and you accept permanent local-data loss. Sony’s exact warning is: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” The process also removes the PS5 system software before installing it again. It is not a guaranteed jailbreak uninstaller, and Sony does not promise that it will repair every console altered by an unofficial method.
- Preserve anything you can still back up. Once reinstallation begins, local saves, users, captures, settings, and installed games may no longer be available on the console.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create the exact folders
PS5andUPDATEat the drive’s root. - Download Sony’s separate system software reinstallation file, not the ordinary manual-update file. Save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUPinsidePS5/UPDATE. - Insert the drive into the PS5 and enter Safe Mode using the second-beep procedure.
- Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Confirm the on-screen warning only when you are ready to erase the console.
- Keep the console connected to power and do not remove the USB drive while the installation is running. Allow the initial setup to complete before reconnecting other storage or attempting updates.
Sony warns that using update data from a different source, using a different installation method, or installing on a console altered or modified in any way can prevent normal operation or installation of official update data. Sony Interactive Entertainment states: “If you download or install the update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a console that has been altered or modified in any way, the console might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data.” The same notice adds: “Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Interactive Entertainment.” These are Sony’s cautions, not a jailbreak-specific diagnosis or promise of recovery.
If the USB file is rejected or installation fails
- “Cannot find the update file”: verify FAT32 or exFAT formatting, the exact
PS5/UPDATEpath, uppercase names, and the filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP. Make sure you downloaded the file intended for the selected Safe Mode action. - Installation stops or loops: do not repeatedly retry with random files. Power interruptions, a failing drive, corrupted download, storage damage, or an altered system can all prevent installation. Recreate the USB using Sony’s current file and follow the published sequence once.
- Safe Mode appears but the controller does not respond: use a different USB data cable and another USB port, then press the PS button. A cable that only supplies power will not establish the required controller connection.
- The console returns to Safe Mode after every restart: run the least destructive applicable option first, then attempt the official update. Do not jump to reinstallation until you have decided that erasing all local data is acceptable.
- The console never reaches Safe Mode: stop unofficial recovery attempts and use Sony’s repair diagnostic route. Support and warranty outcomes vary by region, and a repair center may need to inspect the hardware.
What this recovery can and cannot establish
Sony’s published procedures describe ordinary PS5 update, Safe Mode, and reinstallation behavior. They do not provide a jailbreak-specific success rate, a guarantee that a modified console will boot afterward, or a promise that saved data can be recovered. They also do not diagnose a particular console without its model, firmware history, storage condition, and exact error message. A successful reinstall returns the console to the official system-software path, but it should not be represented as proof that every trace or consequence of an attempted jailbreak has been reversed.
No official cost, failure frequency, or recovery percentage is established in these support instructions. If the official file is rejected after the path and format checks, or if the console cannot enter Safe Mode, the practical next step is Sony’s PlayStation Repairs and support service rather than more experimentation.
Quick Recap
A cautious decision checklist
- Can it reach the home screen? Back up what you can and use normal Sony update controls.
- Can it reach Safe Mode? Connect the controller by USB and begin with Repair Console Storage, Restore Default Settings, cache/database maintenance, or a normal update as the symptom warrants.
- Does the normal update fail? Prepare a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive with
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPand choose Update from USB Storage Device. - Are all less destructive options exhausted and data loss acceptable? Use the separate reinstallation file and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), knowing Sony says it deletes all console data.
- Does Safe Mode or official installation still fail? Stop using unofficial files and contact PlayStation Repairs/support.
