Choose the recovery route for what you lost
World of Warcraft has two separate self-service tools. Item Restoration handles eligible items; the character-selection screen handles deleted characters. They are not interchangeable.

A character restoration does not automatically recreate gear that was sold, destroyed, or disenchanted. Conversely, Item Restoration cannot be used while the character that owned the item remains deleted.

- Confirm the account can use the service. Item Restoration requires active game time or a current subscription. It is unavailable while the account is suspended or banned.
- Open Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration page. Sign in to the Battle.net account that owns the character.
- Select the character. The service shows items that character sold, destroyed, or disenchanted and that are still in Blizzard’s recovery database.
- Select the item or items. Review the list carefully; an item that is absent cannot be selected through the service.
- Submit the restoration. Blizzard processes the request and sends the restored gear to that character’s in-game mailbox.
- Log in and check the mailbox. Mail delivery is the normal endpoint of the process. If it does not appear immediately, leave the character, wait briefly, and check the mailbox again before submitting another request.
Blizzard Support describes the service as restoring “sold, destroyed, or disenchanted items.” Customer Support does not manually restore ordinary World of Warcraft items, so the self-service page is the correct first and usually only route.

Use the character selector carefully. Item Restoration is tied to the character that performed the sale, destruction, or disenchant; choosing another character will not reveal the missing item. After submitting, log into that same character and inspect the mailbox rather than the bank, bags, or Collections interface.
What happens when the gear was disenchanted?
Keep every material you received from the disenchant. Blizzard treats those materials as the exchange for returning the original item and reclaims them when it completes the restoration. Do not mail, sell, consume, or otherwise move the materials while the request is pending.
Restoring a disenchanted item does not recreate its former trade status. If the item was disenchanted while you were in a raid group, restoring it within the normal two-hour trade period does not restore the group-trade option. The item returns to your character, but the temporary raid trade eligibility does not.

If you no longer have the materials
The support guidance makes retaining the materials a condition of the exchange. If they are missing, the service may not complete the restoration. Do not assume replacement materials purchased from another player will satisfy the system; Blizzard’s documented process is based on reclaiming the materials generated by that disenchant.
This exchange also means you should not spend the materials while deciding whether to submit the request. Leave them on the character, and do not send them to an alt or place them in a transaction that could make them unavailable for reclamation.
Check Buyback before using Item Restoration
Two common mistakes have a faster solution:
- Sold during the current login session: open the vendor’s Buyback tab. Blizzard says Buyback can repurchase the last 12 items sold since login.
- Destroyed during the current session: log out first. Blizzard says a newly destroyed item does not enter Item Restoration until you log out.
Buyback is separate from the Item Restoration allowance. Buying an item back from a vendor does not consume one of the restoration slots described below.
Buyback is a vendor feature, not a second Blizzard recovery database. It applies to the last 12 items sold since that login, so it is the best first check for a sale that happened minutes ago. If you logged out, changed characters, or the item is no longer in Buyback, use Item Restoration if the item appears there.
Item Restoration limits and cooldown
Blizzard’s current support article states that you can restore up to five items once every 24 hours on each character. The live service page also displays a 24-hour per-character cooldown. The allowance belongs to the character, not to the entire Battle.net account, so another character may have a separate allowance.

Service limits can change, so read the number shown on the live Item Restoration page when you submit a request. Do not treat the five-item figure as a permanent guarantee for every future game version.
The five-item limit is not five items for every character simultaneously. It is a per-character allowance, and the 24-hour timer is also attached to that character. If you have several losses, prioritize the most valuable eligible pieces and check the live page before confirming, because Blizzard can alter service limits.

Why an item is missing from the restoration list
An empty or incomplete list does not mean Customer Support can retrieve the item manually. Blizzard says item records eventually disappear from the recovery database; once an entry is purged, it cannot be restored by any means.
Retention depends on the item
Quality and item level influence how long an entry remains available. Blizzard gives these examples rather than universal promises:

Check the service as soon as you notice the loss. Waiting can allow the record to expire even when the item would otherwise qualify. These examples describe possible database retention, not a promise that every white item lasts exactly one day or every Epic lasts exactly 30 days.
Other item categories Blizzard excludes
- Stackable crafting materials and quest items.
- Consumables such as reagents, potions, and food.
- Collectibles already added to Collections.
- Temporary items.
- Items traded or mailed to another character.
- Items sold on the Auction House.
- Items destroyed before a Character Transfer or Faction Change.
If a pet, mount, or heirloom appears to be missing, Blizzard recommends checking the Collections interface or logging in with the character that originally obtained it. A collection entry is not restored through the normal item list in the same way as physical gear.
Likewise, an item that was mailed, traded, or auctioned is not treated as a simple deletion from your bags. Those transactions are explicit exclusions, so searching the restoration page repeatedly will not make such an item appear.

If the lost item belonged to a deleted character, stop at the item-recovery step until the character is back. Blizzard’s restore control is on the character-selection screen, and Customer Support does not restore characters on a player’s behalf.
- Launch World of Warcraft and reach the character-selection screen.
- Choose the option to restore a deleted character.
- Select the character shown as eligible.
- Confirm the restoration and wait for the character to return.
- Log in to verify the character, then open Item Restoration and select that character.
A restored character returns as it was when deleted. You must have an available character slot. If the character does not appear in the restore list, Blizzard says it has been purged and cannot be restored by any means.
Restoring the character only brings back the character state that Blizzard retained at deletion. It does not undo a later sale, destruction, disenchant, transfer, or auction of an item. Once the character is playable, you still have to run the separate Item Restoration process and satisfy its item-specific retention and cooldown rules.
Character restoration limits and eligibility
Character recovery has a separate cooldown and different eligibility rules from item recovery. Blizzard limits restoration to one character per day. The cooldown is shared among multiple World of Warcraft accounts attached to the same Battle.net account.
Blizzard’s current support page displays two separate eligibility tables. Because the page presents them in different game or version contexts, do not combine them into one universal rule:

The applicable table depends on the game or client context Blizzard is applying to your character. Use the entries displayed in your own restore screen rather than calculating eligibility from a merged chart.
Characters that cannot be restored
- Characters below the relevant minimum level.
- Class-trial characters.
- Allied-race or hero-class characters at their starting level.
- Characters when you do not have an open character slot.
- Characters whose records have been purged.
A temporary restoration policy announced on October 3, 2024 mentioned a 60-second delay and a seven-day cooldown reinstated on October 15. That announcement was historical and related to a temporary policy update; it is not the current one-character-per-day rule.
Because the two tables use different level bands and retention wording, a level-30, level-50, or higher character can fall under different displayed rules depending on the client context. The restore screen is authoritative for your account. Do not delete another character to create a slot until you have checked which character you intend to recover and confirmed that the deleted character is actually listed.

You sold the item minutes ago
Stay logged in and check the vendor’s Buyback tab first. It covers the last 12 items sold since login. If the item is not there, log out and then check Item Restoration.
You destroyed the item minutes ago
Log out to make the destruction record eligible for the service, then sign in and open Item Restoration. A current-session deletion may not appear before logout.
You disenchanted the item and still have the materials
Open Item Restoration, select the item, and leave the resulting materials untouched. Blizzard reclaims them when it returns the gear.
You disenchanted the item in a raid group
You can still attempt restoration if the item is listed, but the item will not regain its two-hour raid-trade option. Restoration returns the gear only.
You deleted the character and then realized the gear was missing
Restore the character from the character-selection screen. Once it is playable again, use Item Restoration for the gear. You must satisfy both sets of limits.
The item or character is not listed
Check the exclusions, retention period, account status, and required logout. If the record has been purged, Blizzard states that Customer Support cannot recover it.
You cannot use Item Restoration at all
Verify that the Battle.net account has active game time or a subscription and is not suspended or banned. Those account conditions are separate from whether an individual item is eligible. An account that passes the item rules still cannot submit a request without the required game access.

The item is a mount, pet, or heirloom
First check Collections and then log in with the character that originally obtained it. Collectibles already added to Collections do not return through the ordinary physical-item list, and a missing collection entry may simply require viewing the correct character or interface.
What Customer Support can and cannot do
Blizzard’s Item Restoration article states that “Customer Support will not restore World of Warcraft items.” The support team cannot bypass the service’s list, cooldown, account-status requirement, or retention database. A ticket is therefore not a workaround for an ineligible or purged item.
The same principle applies to deleted characters that no longer appear in the restore control. Blizzard says purged characters cannot be restored by any means. Submit a ticket only for a separate technical problem, such as the restoration page failing to load, rather than expecting a manual exception to the rules.
Support can therefore be useful for a genuine page or account malfunction, but it cannot turn an excluded item into an eligible one. Keep the exact character, item type, approximate loss time, and account status in mind when troubleshooting, and check the service’s own list before opening a ticket.
Prevent another accidental loss
- When clearing bags, inspect item quality, transmog appearance, and upgrade status before disenchanting or deleting.
- Use buyback immediately after a mistaken vendor sale instead of waiting for the session to end.
- After a disenchant mistake, keep the resulting materials in the same character’s bags or bank until the request is resolved.
- Do not transfer, faction-change, mail, auction, or trade an item you may need to recover; those actions are among Blizzard’s exclusions.
- If you plan to delete a character, first move important gear and confirm that the destination character has room.
- Check Item Restoration promptly because retention varies by item and purged entries are permanent.
Quick decision checklist
- Was it a vendor sale during this login? Check Buyback for the last 12 sold items.
- Was it destroyed this session? Log out before checking Item Restoration.
- Was it disenchanted? Preserve the materials; Blizzard reclaims them.
- Was the owner character deleted? Restore that character first.
- Is the account active and unrestricted? Item Restoration requires game time or a subscription and is unavailable to suspended or banned accounts.
- Is the item listed and not excluded? If it is absent or purged, Customer Support cannot restore it.

Why is my deleted character missing?
It may be below the applicable level threshold, a class trial, an allied-race or hero-class character at its starting level, blocked by the lack of an open slot, outside its retention window, or already purged. A purged character cannot be restored.
Does the character restore cooldown apply to every WoW account?

Preserve disenchant materials because Blizzard takes them back. If the item was on a deleted character, undelete that character first.
