First, stop launching the game and do not choose a Steam Cloud conflict option yet. A new save or an incorrect choice can overwrite the copy you want. Exit the game and Steam, then copy the game’s save folder and its Steam userdata folder somewhere safe. Recovery may be possible from Steam Remote Storage, a local copy, or a Windows backup—but Steam Cloud synchronizes game-configured files; it is not a guaranteed archive of older versions.
Before restoring a save, preserve every copy
- Exit the game. In Steam, select Steam → Exit to close the client completely.
- Copy the game’s local save folder, the relevant Steam
userdatafolder, and any backup or similarly named save files to a separate location. Add the date to the backup folder name and leave those copies untouched during recovery. - Identify which copy you want before reconnecting or synchronizing. Do not delete the whole
userdatafolder or remove files as a first step.
Valve describes Steam Cloud as synchronizing files configured by each game, before or after game sessions. A change can be uploaded when a game closes, so repeated launches can make recovery harder. See Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation.
Check whether the game uses Steam Cloud
Cloud saves are available only when a game supports and has configured Steam Cloud. Check both controls:
- Global: Steam → Settings → Cloud → enable Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
- Per game: Library → right-click the game → Properties → General → enable its Steam Cloud option, if shown.
Labels may vary slightly by Steam client version or game. The Steam store page may show the Steam Cloud feature, but support and behavior still depend on the game’s implementation. Valve’s documentation explains that developers choose which files and paths synchronize.

If Steam shows a Cloud conflict
A conflict means the local and cloud copies changed separately and Steam cannot determine which contains the progress you want. Offline play is one possible cause. The choice is directional: keeping the cloud copy can replace local files, while keeping the local copy can upload it and replace the cloud version. Valve describes conflict handling in its Steam Cloud FAQ.
- Before selecting anything, compare the displayed timestamps and the devices or sessions that could have changed the save.
- If the cloud version is the known-good save, choose the option to keep or download the cloud files.
- If the local version is the known-good save, choose the option to keep or upload the local files.
- Launch the game and confirm that the expected progress loads. Exit normally, let Steam synchronize, then check the game’s Cloud status.
Do not pick a copy solely because its timestamp is newer. Reinstalling Windows, copying files, restoring a backup, time-zone differences, or a game creating a fresh save can make timestamps misleading. Back up both copies before resolving the prompt.
Download a cloud save manually
Steam’s Remote Storage page may let you download files for a game. While signed in to the Steam account that owns the game, open https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=APP_ID and replace APP_ID with the game’s Steam App ID. The ID is commonly visible in the game’s Steam store URL.

- Select the game and download the relevant file or files, if available.
- Disable Steam Cloud for the game temporarily in Library → right-click the game → Properties → General.
- Find the game’s actual save directory. Back up its existing contents, then put the downloaded file in the correct location and subfolder.
- Start the game with Cloud disabled and verify the save. Re-enable Cloud only after confirming that the desired progress loads.
- If Steam then reports a conflict, choose the verified local copy so it can upload to Cloud.
File names, available downloads, and formats vary by game. A downloaded file may be a container or use a proprietary format rather than being a save you can open directly. Likewise, a file in Steam’s remote folder is not necessarily the file the game reads from its active save directory.
For example, Paradox’s Windows instructions identify Crusader Kings III cloud saves under C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata[steam_id]1158310remotesave games and direct players to copy them to the game’s ordinary save folder. The destination is specific to that game; see Paradox’s instructions.
Restore a save from Steam’s local files
The default Windows Steam Cloud cache is C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, though Steam may be installed elsewhere. Under userdata are Steam-account folders, then game folders identified by App ID. A typical game-specific location is:

To restore a known-good local copy, close the game and Steam, disable Cloud for that game, and copy the current files to a separate safety location. Replace the active files with the backup, start Steam, and launch the game with Cloud still disabled if necessary. Verify the progress before re-enabling Cloud. If Steam asks which copy to keep, select the verified local save. Remedy’s CONTROL backup and restore instructions provide a game-specific example using userdata<SteamID>870780remote.
Look beyond the Steam userdata folder
userdata is Steam’s local Cloud cache, not a universal location for every active game save. Valve lists these Windows roots as locations developers can configure for Steam Cloud:

Common folder patterns include %USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy Games<Game>, %USERPROFILE%Documents<Publisher><Game>, %APPDATA%<Game or Publisher>, and %LOCALAPPDATA%<Game or Publisher>. These are examples, not universal paths; some games save inside their installation folder or use a publisher launcher or account service. If Steam keeps downloading the wrong save
- Exit the game and Steam. Copy both the active game save folder and the relevant
userdatafolder to a safety location. - Disable Cloud for the game.
- Move only the active save files you intend to replace; do not delete your safety copies. Put the known-good save in the game’s actual save directory.
- Launch with Cloud disabled and confirm the game loads the correct progress.
- Exit normally, re-enable Cloud, and resolve any resulting conflict in favor of the verified local copy.
Avoid blindly deleting userdata or remotecache.vdf, or relying on undocumented console commands. These actions can remove useful local state or make it harder to identify which copy is valid.
Use Steam’s Cloud log to diagnose synchronization
Steam’s log is <Steam installation folder>logscloud_log.txt. It can show transfer attempts, file paths, timestamps, App IDs, and synchronization errors. Valve identifies the log in its Steam Cloud documentation. It can help establish what Steam attempted, but it does not recreate a save that no longer exists.
If the save was deleted or overwritten
Check each possible remaining copy before concluding it is gone:

If both local and cloud copies were deleted or overwritten, Steam may have no older version to restore. Valve says Steam Support has limited ability to restore Cloud data because synchronization is automated; see the Steam Cloud FAQ. Recovery also varies by game: Capcom, for example, warns that corrupted, deleted, or overwritten Monster Hunter: World Steam save data is not recoverable and that it does not keep a replacement copy on its servers. That warning is specific to that title, not a universal policy for every game; see Capcom’s support article.
When a game does not support Steam Cloud, Steam cannot restore a save it never synchronized. Reinstalling the game does not recreate a missing save or backup.
Moving saves between Windows, Steam Deck, macOS, or Linux
Steam Cloud support alone does not guarantee cross-platform saves. Developers can configure platform-specific paths, and save formats may not be compatible. Proton or a launcher can also put files in a different location. A Deck session that was offline or left suspended may later produce a conflict. Keep the known-good Windows copy backed up and do not replace it with an unverified file from another platform. Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation describes operating-system-specific configuration.
Quick Recap
Final recovery check
- The wanted save has been identified and all remaining copies are backed up.
- Cloud was disabled during manual replacement, and the game’s actual save directory was confirmed.
- The game loads the expected progress before synchronization resumes.
- The verified copy is selected in any conflict prompt and successfully synchronized.
- A fresh backup of the restored save is stored separately.
