Choose the smallest fix that matches the problem
“Back to normal” can describe four different situations. Selecting the narrowest remedy avoids deleting a loader when you only needed to leave Desktop Mode, and avoids system recovery for a cosmetic change.

These are separate operations. Returning to Gaming Mode does not uninstall a plugin, and removing Decky does not necessarily reverse every file or setting that an individual plugin may have changed.
Return from Desktop Mode to the normal Steam Deck interface
If the screen looks like a desktop computer rather than the console’s game library, you probably have not damaged the interface at all. You are simply in Desktop Mode.

Use the desktop shortcut
- Find the desktop shortcut labeled Return to Gaming Mode.
- Select it and wait for the Gaming Mode session to load.
Steam Support describes this shortcut directly: “On the desktop, there’s a link to ‘Return to Gaming Mode’.” Its purpose is to return the device to the standard Steam Deck UI; it does not remove Decky, themes, or other plugins. The instruction appears in Steam’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop: FAQ.
Log off instead
If the shortcut is unavailable or you prefer the session menu, log off from the desktop. Steam documents logging off as another route back to the normal Gaming Mode session. Logging off is a session change, not a plugin-uninstall operation, so any installed customization remains available when you next use Gaming Mode.
How to tell that this was the only problem
Once Gaming Mode appears, check whether the library, navigation, and appearance are the standard ones you expected. If the interface still contains a custom theme, additional panels, or other Decky changes, you have returned from Desktop Mode successfully but still need to manage the relevant plugin.

Remove one plugin while keeping Decky Loader
Use this route when Decky itself is useful but a particular plugin is responsible for the altered appearance or behavior. A theme plugin, for example, can change Gaming Mode while the underlying Decky framework continues to work normally.
Open Decky’s plugin-management controls
- Enter Gaming Mode. If you are currently on the desktop, first use Return to Gaming Mode or log off.
- Open Decky’s menu from Gaming Mode.
- Open the plugin-management area and locate the plugin associated with the change.
- Use that plugin’s uninstall or removal control, then use Decky’s reload control if the menu offers one.
The Decky Loader project documents updating, uninstalling, and reloading plugins from its management interface. The current project documentation is available in the Decky Loader repository and its README. Menu names and plugin behavior can change as SteamOS and the Steam client change, so follow the control exposed by the installed version rather than assuming every plugin has identical wording.
When the culprit is a theme
Look first for the plugin that explicitly controls themes, CSS, layout, artwork, or other visual customization. Remove that plugin rather than deleting Decky Loader wholesale. After the plugin is removed and Decky has reloaded its plugins, inspect Gaming Mode again. This keeps unrelated Decky tools available and limits the scope of the change.

If the visual change remains
A plugin can leave settings or files behind, and the available documentation does not establish that uninstalling every plugin reverses every side effect. Confirm that the intended plugin is actually uninstalled, reload Decky’s plugins when that option is available, and check the interface again. If the remaining fault is broader than the original customization, move to the recovery criteria below instead of repeatedly deleting unrelated plugins.

Uninstall Decky Loader completely
Choose a full uninstall only when you no longer want the Decky Loader framework or when removing individual plugins has not addressed a Decky-specific problem. This is more extensive than returning to Gaming Mode and more extensive than removing one theme or utility.
Use the documented installer route
- Press the Steam button while in Gaming Mode.
- Open Power.
- Choose Switch to Desktop.
- In Desktop Mode, run the Decky installer again.
- When the installer presents its choices, select
uninstall decky loader.
The Decky project’s README documents this workflow: the installer is run from Desktop Mode again, and the uninstall option is selected there. Use the project’s current instructions for the installer you have; do not substitute a random removal command from an unrelated guide.
Use the project’s Konsole script if that is your preferred method
The same README also documents an uninstall script for users who prefer Konsole. Open the README’s uninstall section and follow the script exactly as currently written. The script is maintained separately from the Gaming Mode interface, so its syntax may change; copying an old command from a forum post can produce a different result from the documented procedure.
What a Decky uninstall does—and does not promise
Uninstalling the loader removes Decky Loader through the project’s documented uninstall path. It does not establish that every plugin-created preference, downloaded asset, or visual modification is automatically restored to its original value. If a particular plugin changed a setting outside Decky’s own files, inspect that setting using the plugin’s documentation or Steam’s normal settings after the loader is gone. The project documentation does not guarantee complete reversal of every plugin side effect.

When the uninstall has completed, use the Desktop Mode shortcut Return to Gaming Mode or log off. This verifies the result in the standard console interface. If the desktop session is still open, that is not evidence that the uninstall failed; it only means you have not yet switched sessions.

Do not jump straight to SteamOS recovery for a cosmetic change
SteamOS recovery is a fallback for a system problem, not the normal first step for removing a theme or leaving Desktop Mode. Use it when the failure is wider than the plugin—for example, when the Deck cannot return to a usable interface, essential system behavior remains broken after the relevant plugin and loader are removed, or the issue points to modified system files rather than a Decky menu setting.
Steam’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting documentation lists recovery options, including a way to restore modified system files to an unmodified state. Read the option descriptions on that page and choose the least destructive operation that addresses the failure. Recovery is a system-level action, so it belongs after the ordinary Desktop Mode and plugin-management paths have been exhausted—not before them.
Signs the issue is broader than Decky
- The problem affects core SteamOS behavior rather than one visual plugin or theme.
- The Deck remains unusable after the responsible plugin is removed and Decky is uninstalled.
- The symptoms suggest modified or damaged system files instead of a setting exposed by Decky.
- The standard Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode transitions no longer work as documented.
If none of these conditions applies and the only complaint is that the interface looks customized, recovery is disproportionate. Start with the plugin that made the change.

Troubleshoot the common decision points
The “Return to Gaming Mode” shortcut is not visible
Confirm that you are actually in the Steam Deck desktop session rather than a different screen or an in-game overlay. Steam documents logging off as an alternative route, so use the desktop session’s log-off command if the shortcut cannot be found. If neither route works and the failure affects the session itself, treat it as a broader SteamOS problem and consult the recovery documentation.
You removed a plugin but the interface still looks customized
Check that you removed the plugin responsible for the visual change, not merely another Decky utility. Use Decky’s reload control when available, then inspect Gaming Mode again. Because the documentation does not promise that uninstalling a plugin erases every setting or file it touched, persistent customization may require reversing a setting through the original plugin’s own instructions. Do not infer that Decky Loader itself is broken solely because a plugin left a preference behind.
You removed Decky but want to verify the result
Switch back to Gaming Mode and check whether Decky’s menu and the plugin-provided controls are gone. A normal Steam Deck interface without Decky’s additions indicates that the loader is no longer active. A leftover visual setting is a separate cleanup question; the documented uninstall process does not promise to restore every plugin side effect.

The problem started after a SteamOS or Steam client update
Plugin compatibility can change with SteamOS and Steam client updates. Recheck the Decky project’s current README before repeating an older install or uninstall command, and identify whether the symptom belongs to a plugin or to the operating system itself. If the behavior remains after removing the relevant customization and is no longer limited to the interface, use Steam’s recovery guidance.
You are unsure whether to remove the loader
Ask one question: do you still want other Decky plugins? If yes, remove only the offending plugin. If no, follow the full uninstall path from Desktop Mode. If you are only seeing the desktop, do neither—return to Gaming Mode instead.
Verify each step without making the problem harder to diagnose
Make one change at a time and check Gaming Mode after each change. First confirm the session, then remove the specific plugin, then decide whether the loader itself should go. This creates a useful checkpoint after every operation: if the standard interface returns after leaving Desktop Mode, no uninstall was necessary; if only the theme disappears after removing one plugin, Decky was not the cause of anything else; if Decky’s menu remains after the installer’s uninstall option, the loader step needs attention before you consider operating-system recovery.
Keep the distinction between appearance and function in view. A custom background, CSS layout, artwork panel, or extra menu points toward a visual plugin. A failure that affects launching games, system navigation, or the Desktop Mode transition is not automatically caused by that theme. Avoid removing several unrelated plugins at once, because doing so makes it harder to identify which customization caused the symptom and whether a setting was left behind.
After returning to Gaming Mode, inspect the main library view, open the quick-access controls, and check whether Decky-specific entries are still present. These checks do not prove that every file has been erased; they simply confirm whether the visible loader and interface additions are still active. If you need a completely clean setting, use the original plugin’s own reset instructions where available rather than assuming the loader uninstall will rewrite every preference.

- Identify the current session. If it is Desktop Mode, use Return to Gaming Mode or log off.
- In Gaming Mode, determine whether a specific Decky plugin is responsible for the appearance or behavior.
- Remove that plugin through Decky’s plugin-management menu and reload plugins when offered.

This order preserves the least amount of software necessary for the result you want and keeps a session change, a plugin removal, a loader uninstall, and an operating-system recovery from being confused with one another.
