How to restrict mature games and sexual content with PS5 parental controls

To block mature games on a PS5, create a separate child account in your family, then go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > [child] > Parental Controls. Set Age Level for Games and Apps to the child’s age (or lower), and set Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict if you also want to block chat, broadcasts, screenshots, video clips, and player-created material. PS5 does not provide a universal “block sexual content only” slider, so sexual-content screening requires checking each game’s rating descriptors as well as its age category.

What PS5 parental controls can block

PS5 parental controls work through a child’s account in a PlayStation family. The main game setting blocks titles above an age level or rating category. Separate controls can limit communication, user-created content, online interaction, purchases and related features.

  • Age Level for Games and Apps: blocks games above the age threshold selected for the child.
  • Rating descriptors: identify content such as sexual themes, nudity, graphic sexual images, violence and bad language so you can make a title-by-title decision.

There is no system-wide PS5 switch that blocks only sexual content while allowing every other mature element. A low enough age level will block many mature categories together, while descriptors help you identify sexual content in games that fall near the child’s allowed boundary.

Set up the family and child account first

Controls are applied to children in a PlayStation family, not to an adult account shared by everyone. Sony recommends giving each child a separate account. This keeps age settings, requests, spending and activity associated with the correct person and prevents an adult’s unrestricted profile from becoming a way around the limits.

Create or add the child account

  1. Sign in to the adult account that will act as family manager.
  2. Create a PlayStation family and add the child as a separate child member. Use the child’s real date of birth so the age-based defaults and rating system correspond to the child’s age.
  3. On the PS5, make sure the child signs in with that child account rather than the family manager’s account.
  4. Keep the family-manager passcode and console restrictions private. If the child can sign in as an adult or change family settings, the restrictions are not enforceable.

Some age-filtering features and rating labels vary by country or region. The storefront and rating authority shown for your account determine the exact categories and wording you see.

Step-by-step: block mature games on a PS5

1. Open the child’s parental-controls page

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Family and Parental Controls.
  3. Open Family Management.
  4. Select the child’s account.
  5. Choose Parental Controls.

The settings must be changed for the child’s account. Adjusting controls while signed in as an adult does not automatically impose the same limits on every family member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Choose the game and app age level

  1. In the child’s parental-controls screen, open Age Level for Games and Apps.
  2. Select the child’s age or choose a stricter level. A lower selected age creates tighter limits.
  3. Save the setting and return to the child’s controls.

In the United States, PS5 restrictions correspond to ESRB rating categories. A game above the selected category is blocked for the child account. Other countries use their own age-rating authorities and labels, so the same nominal age may not display exactly the same category in every region.

3. Confirm the result with the child account

Sign in as the child and try to open a title that is above the selected level. A restricted game should show a block screen rather than launch. If a game was already running when you changed the setting, have the child sign out and sign back in; Sony notes that a new session may be required before a changed control takes effect.

How age levels and rating categories work

The age level is a category filter, not a content-by-content classifier. It is designed to stop a child account from launching games assigned to higher age categories. It does not let you permit a mature game while removing only one element, such as sexual imagery, from that game.

Setting approach What it does When to use it
Child preset Applies a strongly restrictive starting profile for younger children, including a low game age level and tighter online features. Use as a starting point for a young child, then review each individual control.
Early Teens preset Applies a middle restriction profile for game age, communication, online content, spending and related features. Use when a teenager needs more access but should not have unrestricted mature content.
Late Teens or Older preset Starts with a higher age threshold and fewer default limits than the younger presets. Use only when the child’s age and your family rules justify broader access.
Customize Lets you change individual controls after selecting a preset. Changing one individual setting changes the profile to Customize. Use when you want one strict rule, such as no chat or no spending, alongside a different game-age setting.

The exact preset behavior can depend on your region. Treat the preset as a starting configuration and inspect the individual settings before handing over the controller.

ESRB examples in the United States

ESRB’s PS5 guidance illustrates how the age threshold maps to categories: selecting age 9 automatically blocks games above E for Everyone; selecting age 11 allows E and E10+ but blocks T for Teen and higher. The labels and category boundaries displayed on your console may differ outside the United States.

How to screen for sexual content

Because PS5 has no universal sexual-content-only slider, inspect a game’s rating information before buying, downloading or approving it. The rating entry and its descriptors can call out:

  • Sexual themes
  • Nudity
  • Graphic sexual images
  • Violence
  • Bad language

Use the age level to set the broad boundary, then read the descriptors for every title you are considering. A game that sits at the top of the child’s allowed range may still contain a descriptor you do not want your child to see. Sony advises checking ratings and descriptors before buying PlayStation products.

A practical approval routine

  1. Find the game’s rating in the PlayStation storefront, on its product packaging or in the rating authority’s listing for your region.
  2. Read every descriptor, not just the letter or age number.
  3. Decide whether the content is acceptable for this child, taking maturity and context into account.
  4. If the title is above the child’s configured level, do not rely on an adult account to “temporarily” launch it. Use the formal exception process instead.
  5. Record any game you approve so you can revisit the decision when the child’s age or family rules change.

Block chat and player-created material separately

Game-age restrictions do not automatically remove online communication or user-generated content. To reduce exposure to sexual, abusive or otherwise inappropriate material made by players, open the child’s controls and set Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

According to Sony’s description, this restriction can disable:

  • Text messaging with other players
  • Voice chat
  • Sharing the child’s own creations
  • Viewing other players’ user-generated content
  • Some links to third-party communication services
  • Screenshots, video clips, broadcasts and other player-created material, depending on the feature

This setting is independent of the game age threshold. A child can therefore be allowed to play a game within the selected age category while still being blocked from chat and player-created media. Conversely, raising the game age level does not by itself guarantee that online communication is disabled.

When to use Restrict

  • Choose Restrict if the priority is eliminating chat and exposure to player-created media.
  • Review individual game features as well, because communication tools can be built into a game or connected service.
  • Explain to the child that the restriction can affect legitimate teamwork and sharing, not only unwanted messages.

Approve an otherwise blocked game with Allowed Games

A blocked title is not necessarily a permanent “never.” If you review a game and decide it is appropriate for this particular child, use the child’s request and approve that title individually.

  1. Have the child open the blocked game while signed in to the child account.
  2. Use the block screen to send a request to the family manager or appointed guardian.
  3. As the family manager or guardian, open the notification and review the request.
  4. Approve or deny the title in Allowed Games. Sony supports managing allowed games from the PS5, the PlayStation website or the PlayStation Family app.
  5. After approval, have the child sign in again if the game still appears blocked.

An approval is an exception for the selected account and title; it does not lower the age threshold for every other game. Keep the exception list current and remove approvals that no longer fit your family rules.

Configure the other controls that affect mature-content access

Age and communication controls are the two settings most directly related to mature games and sexual material, but a complete setup also checks the surrounding controls.

Online-content filtering

Presets include online-content filtering and related features. Inspect the individual online-content setting after choosing a preset, especially if your child plays games with shared worlds, public profiles or live events.

Spending

Presets also affect spending. If the child should not make purchases, set the child’s spending allowance to zero or use the strictest available purchase setting in the family controls. A game-age block does not prevent an otherwise permitted child account from buying add-ons or other content.

Account and sign-in security

  • Make sure the child remains signed in to the child account.
  • Do not share the family-manager passcode.
  • Check that the child cannot add or use an unrestricted adult account.
  • Review controls after console updates, account changes or a move to another region.

Choosing between a preset and a custom setup

Start with the preset closest to the child’s age, then customize the controls that matter most to your household. The following comparison highlights the decisions to verify rather than assuming a preset matches your rules perfectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision Stricter setup More permissive setup Trade-off
Game age threshold Select the child’s age or lower. Select an older age level. A lower level blocks more mature games but may also block titles you consider acceptable.
Chat and voice Communication and User-Generated Content: Restrict. Allow communication under the family’s chosen level. Restricting reduces unwanted contact but can remove cooperative voice and text features.
Player-created media Block viewing and sharing where the control offers it. Allow some user-generated content. Allowing it increases access to material made by other players, which ratings cannot fully predict.
Online-store filtering Use the stricter filter included in the child’s profile. Use a less restrictive filter with manual review. Stricter filtering reduces browsing options; manual review takes more parent involvement.
Spending Set the child’s spending allowance to zero. Set a family-approved allowance. Zero spending prevents purchases but also prevents the child from buying approved items independently.
Exceptions Require a request and parent approval for each blocked title. Use a higher age level so fewer titles require requests. Per-game approval gives more control but requires you to review requests promptly.

Troubleshoot a game or chat feature that is still available

The mature game still launches

  • Confirm that the child is signed in to the child account, not an adult account.
  • Return to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child and verify Age Level for Games and Apps.
  • Check whether the title was previously added to Allowed Games.
  • Close the game and have the child sign out and back in. Sony notes that a session restart may be necessary after a setting change.

Chat or broadcasts are still working

  • Verify that Communication and User-Generated Content is set to Restrict for the child account.
  • Check whether communication is occurring through a linked third-party service; the PS5 restriction covers selected services, not every external account or device.
  • Review the game’s own communication settings and any account used to sign in to that game.

The child cannot play an acceptable title

  • Read the game’s rating and descriptors rather than assuming the block is an error.
  • If you have reviewed the title and accept it, approve the child’s request in Allowed Games.
  • If the title is available in a different regional edition, check the rating authority and labels for the child’s storefront.

The settings changed unexpectedly

Check which adult account has family-manager or guardian authority, review the child’s account membership and reset any passcode the child may know. Controls are account-based, so changing the profile used to launch a game can change the apparent result without changing the parental-control settings themselves.

Regional and rating-system limits

Rating bodies, age labels and the availability of particular age-filtering features vary by country or region. The United States uses ESRB categories such as E, E10+ and T; another storefront may display a different authority and different age bands. Always use the rating authority shown for the account’s storefront and read its descriptors.

A region change can therefore alter the labels you see without changing your family’s underlying goal. Recheck the child’s age level, communication restriction, online-content filtering and spending controls after moving accounts or consoles between regions.
