You can review the information Facebook associates with your account, download a copy, manage activity and change how selected information is shared. Those are separate from controls that limit certain uses of activity for personalization or ads. No single setting stops all data collection.
Start with privacy and audience settings
In Facebook, open your profile menu and choose Settings & privacy, then Settings. Look under Audience and visibility for controls related to profile details, posts, followers, tagging and blocking. Labels and paths can differ by device, account and country, so follow the current labels shown in your app or browser.
Privacy Checkup can guide you through several sharing and security choices. These controls primarily help determine who can see selected information or content. Changing an audience is not the same as deleting a record Facebook retains or limiting every use of information for personalization.

Use Access your information for an overview
Search Settings for Access your information to browse account information without first requesting a file. Facebook’s help materials describe categories such as activity, personal information, connections, logged information, security and login information, apps and websites outside Facebook or Meta, preferences and ads information. The categories and labels may change, and not every account will necessarily show an identical list.

Use Activity log to find specific actions
In Settings, open Activity log to review items such as posts, comments, likes, searches and apps used. Depending on the item, you may be able to delete or archive it, or manage its visibility. Deleting or archiving eligible activity changes that item in your account; it does not change the audience setting for other content or serve as a universal deletion of information Facebook may hold.
Download a copy for offline review or portability
In Settings, find Download your information. Facebook’s help content describes options to select all available categories or choose particular categories and date ranges. The precise options and labels can vary. Facebook also describes tools for transferring some information to another service.

A download gives you a copy to review or keep; requesting or receiving it does not reduce collection, remove the online material, or delete your account. If your goal is to retain a record before a major account change, download the relevant information first.
Limit use of activity from other businesses
Some activity connected to your use of other businesses’ websites or apps may be supplied to Meta and used for personalization. This is distinct from the audience for your Facebook posts.

Meta announced on June 9, 2026, that it would expand Activity from other businesses to govern use of that activity for both ad and non-ad personalization, and discontinue the older Your activity off Meta technologies control. The company said the change would begin in the United States and certain other countries in July 2026, with additional countries later; its announcement did not list every country. Check the option actually available in your Facebook settings or Accounts Center rather than relying on older instructions that name only the discontinued control. Meta’s June 9, 2026 announcement says, “We aren’t collecting any new data as part of this update.” That is Meta’s description of the announced control change.
For ad-specific choices, look for Ad Preferences or the relevant ad controls in Accounts Center. The controls and legal rights available depend on location. Meta’s US regional privacy notice says Global Privacy Control may be honored for targeted-advertising opt-outs in qualifying circumstances under applicable US privacy laws. That statement is specific to the United States; if you live elsewhere, consult the privacy notice and controls applicable to your country.

Choose the control that matches your goal

Before deleting your account
Deletion is different from hiding posts, managing activity or limiting personalization. Facebook recommends downloading information first and warns that account content cannot be retrieved after deletion. Deletion can also affect Messenger and services where you use Facebook Login. Facebook’s help guidance says copies may remain in backups for up to 90 days in some cases. Because the help page may require login and terms can change, read the current deletion and retention explanation in the live flow before confirming.
