To rip an audio CD, put it in a computer’s built-in or compatible external CD drive, choose ripping software and an output format, check the track information, then extract and verify the files. Choose MP3 when you need a compressed, widely supported format; choose FLAC when you want lossless compression and your playback devices support it. For greater confidence in the extraction, use software with secure rereading and an optional database comparison.

What you need before you start

  • An audio CD and a drive that can read it. If your computer lacks an optical drive, use an external USB CD/DVD drive that can read audio CDs. Check that its connection and operating-system compatibility match your computer. Microsoft lists a CD/DVD drive among the equipment for its disc workflows: Microsoft’s CD ripping instructions.
  • Ripping software. Windows Media Player documents a straightforward Windows workflow and supports MP3 among its listed output formats. For FLAC or secure-ripping features, choose software that explicitly supports them; dBpoweramp documents both in its Secure Setup Guide.
  • A destination folder. Decide where you want the resulting music files saved. Windows Media Player saves ripped music to the Music folder by default, and its settings let you change the location.

MP3 or FLAC: which should you choose?

Format Choose it when Tradeoff
MP3 You specifically need MP3, want compressed files, or prioritize broad compatibility. MP3 is lossy: it does not preserve all the audio information in the original CD. File size and sound quality depend on the encoding settings you choose.
FLAC You want lossless compression and your music player or app supports FLAC. Some devices or apps may not play FLAC. Confirm support before ripping a whole library in this format.

Lossless decoding restores audio identical to the source, according to dBpoweramp’s format and ripping guide. Windows Media Player’s documented choices are WMA, WAV, and MP3; the cited Microsoft instructions do not list FLAC. If FLAC is your goal, use an application that offers it. There is no single MP3 quality setting established here as best for every listener, so select from the options your software provides according to your own balance of file size and quality.

How to rip a CD with Windows Media Player

Microsoft’s documented workflow is for Windows Media Player. The exact screens may vary by version, but the documented controls are Rip CD and Rip settings.

  1. Open Windows Media Player and insert the audio CD into the computer’s drive.
  2. Review the album information. If the player offers a match, check that the artist, album, track names, and order are correct. Use its album-information search or edit the details manually if needed.
  3. Open Rip settings and choose an available format and audio quality. Select MP3 if you need MP3; the Microsoft instructions list MP3, WMA, and WAV, not FLAC.
  4. Deselect any tracks you do not want to copy, then select Rip CD.
  5. When ripping finishes, open the destination folder—Music by default unless changed—and check that the files are present and play.

Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions are available at Burn and rip CDs in Windows Media Player.

  • 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

How to make a more verifiable rip

A basic or burst rip extracts in one pass; dBpoweramp says its burst mode performs no error correction. A secure rip can reread audio to detect and potentially recover read errors, and compatible software may compare the result with AccurateRip, a database of other rips. These checks raise confidence but do not guarantee a perfect result in every case.

  1. Choose ripping software that offers a secure mode and, if desired, AccurateRip comparison. dBpoweramp explains its secure-ripping setup in its Secure Setup Guide.
  2. Follow the application’s instructions to enable secure mode and configure the drive. Drive behavior and support for C2 error pointers can affect the available checks, so use the software’s current drive-specific guidance rather than assuming one configuration works for every drive.
  3. If AccurateRip is available, review the comparison result. A match indicates that the rip agrees with other results in the database. A disagreement is not automatically proof of a bad rip: a different disc pressing can produce a mismatch.
  4. After extraction, inspect per-track status and any available secure-ripping log. dBpoweramp documents both in its CD Ripper help.

Check the metadata and files

Before ripping, confirm the artist, album, track titles, track order, and artwork. Lookup services can return details for the wrong edition when releases share track timings. Correct any mismatch in the ripping app before extraction; that helps keep both the tags and any filenames generated from them accurate. Microsoft documents album lookup and manual correction, while dBpoweramp’s CD Ripper help describes reviewing provider results and editing track details.

If a track fails or sounds wrong

First inspect the disc for visible dirt and clean it gently before retrying the problem track. If the same track still fails, try another compatible drive or ripping application; a single failure does not establish that the audio is unrecoverable. Where available, use secure rereading and review the track’s status or log. No extraction mode can be treated as a guarantee for every disc and drive.
