Microsoft supports rolling back an Xbox controller firmware update in some cases, particularly when connection problems begin after the update. On Windows, use the Xbox Accessories app and Microsoft’s firmware-reversion link; on Xbox, open the controller troubleshooting topic through Xbox Support or Xbox Assist. The process only offers a rollback when Microsoft makes one available for that controller and firmware state—it does not let you choose any historical firmware version.
Quick answer
On a Windows PC, install the Xbox Accessories app, connect the controller with a USB data cable, press Windows + R, and run:

xboxaccessories://firmwareupdate?legacyDowngrade=true
Allow the link to open Xbox Accessories, then follow the firmware-reversion instructions if the option is available.
On an Xbox console, press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Xbox Support or Xbox Assist > Get help > Help topics. Open the controller topic resembling My Xbox controller has connection issues after the last update, then choose Check your controller’s firmware.

Menu labels vary by console software version and region. If Microsoft does not show a reversion option, there is no supported way to force a particular older firmware version.
When rolling back makes sense
Rollback is most reasonable when a problem began immediately after a firmware update and is specifically related to wireless connectivity. Symptoms can include:
- A controller that no longer pairs with a Windows PC or mobile device over Bluetooth.
- Repeated wireless disconnects and reconnects.
- A controller that works on Xbox but not with another Bluetooth host.
- A third-party adapter or converter that stopped recognizing the controller.
- Changed button mapping or unusual input behavior after the update.
Microsoft’s supported guidance focuses on connection issues after the last update. Reports linking updates to stick-response changes or drift are user experiences, not proof that firmware caused the problem. Rollback cannot repair worn joystick components, liquid damage, a damaged USB port, battery failure, or another hardware fault.

Before you begin
- Install the Xbox Accessories app from Microsoft’s official route.
- Use a working USB data cable. A charge-only cable will not allow the PC to communicate with the controller.
- Connect directly to the PC where possible, rather than through a USB hub.
- Keep the controller connected throughout the operation.
- Do not close Xbox Accessories, restart Windows, or power off the PC while firmware is being changed.
- Record the symptom and the connection that failed so you can test it after the rollback.
This is a firmware reversion, not a factory reset, controller calibration, console reset, or general repair procedure. Do not download firmware files, old app installers, APK mirrors, or modified Xbox Accessories packages from unofficial websites.
Method 1: Roll back on a Windows PC
- Open or install the Xbox Accessories app.
- Connect the Xbox Wireless Controller or Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 to the PC with a USB data cable.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Paste
xboxaccessories://firmwareupdate?legacyDowngrade=true. - Press Enter and allow Windows to open the link in Xbox Accessories.
- Follow the instructions shown by the app.
- Wait for the app to report completion before unplugging the controller.
- Reconnect the controller to the device that originally failed. If Bluetooth was the problem, remove the old controller entry from that device, restart Bluetooth, and pair it again.
The xboxaccessories:// address is an app deep link, not a normal webpage. It launches the reversion screen only when Xbox Accessories is installed and correctly registered, and when Microsoft has made a rollback available. On some installations it may open the app’s main screen instead.
Method 2: Roll back from an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system.
- Open Xbox Support or Xbox Assist.
- Select Get help, then Help topics.
- Open the controller or accessories troubleshooting section. It may appear under Console & accessories or Hardware & networking.
- Select the topic about controller connection problems after the last update.
- Choose Check your controller’s firmware and follow the on-screen instructions.
Keep the controller connected to the console while the process runs. The console may need an internet connection to load current support content or retrieve firmware information.

If the rollback option is missing
A missing option does not necessarily mean that the controller is faulty. Microsoft may not expose rollback for the controller model, current firmware state, update history, or available firmware package. Other possible causes include:
- The controller is not being detected correctly.
- The USB cable is charge-only, damaged, or unreliable.
- Xbox Accessories is outdated or damaged.
- The
xboxaccessories://protocol is not associated with the app. - The controller is already on the available legacy firmware.
- The problem is unrelated to firmware.
Microsoft does not publicly provide a supported method for selecting any firmware version you want. If the official app does not offer a reversion, do not substitute an unofficial firmware file or an old Xbox Accessories installer.
If Windows rollback fails
Try these steps in order:
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller.
- Try another known-good USB data cable.
- Use another USB port directly on the PC.
- Close and reopen Xbox Accessories.
- Restart Windows and run the deep link again.
- Use Windows’ app settings to repair or reset Xbox Accessories, if those options are available.
- Reinstall Xbox Accessories through the official Microsoft Store route.
- Try the process on another Windows PC.
- Use the Xbox console method if the controller connects to an Xbox.
- Contact Xbox Support if the controller remains undetected or repeated attempts produce update errors.
A failed firmware operation can temporarily leave the controller unavailable or displaying an update error. Avoid repeatedly interrupting the process or switching to unofficial tools.

What to check after the rollback
When the app reports completion, power-cycle the controller if it does not reconnect normally. Pair it again with the affected device, then test both wired and wireless operation. Test the specific game, adapter, or Bluetooth host that originally showed the problem.
Bluetooth still does not work
Remove the controller from the host device’s Bluetooth list, restart Bluetooth, and pair it again. Test another Bluetooth host and test the controller over USB. If only a third-party dongle or converter fails, check that accessory’s driver and firmware separately; its compatibility may depend on a particular controller revision.

Rollback is not a reliable fix for mechanical stick drift. Drift can result from wear, contamination, or calibration state. You can investigate the calibration tools available in Xbox Accessories, but calibration cannot restore physically damaged components. If drift remains across games and connections, hardware service or replacement may be necessary.

The controller works over USB but not wirelessly
This points toward a Bluetooth host, pairing, adapter, battery, or wireless-radio issue, although it does not by itself prove that firmware is innocent. Try another host, re-pair the controller, and check the other device’s Bluetooth drivers or accessory firmware before repeating firmware operations.
Rollback trade-offs and edge cases
Rolling back may restore compatibility or remove a regression, but it can also remove fixes or improvements included in the newer firmware. The newer update may be offered again later, and rollback is not a guarantee that the controller will remain on the older firmware indefinitely.
Xbox Wireless Controller revisions are not identical, so results can differ between older and newer models. Community reports involving the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 should not be generalized to every Elite or standard controller. Likewise, some third-party accessory makers document firmware rollback for specific compatibility problems, but that does not make unofficial controller firmware tools safe or universally applicable. Check the accessory maker’s official documentation only when the problem is limited to that accessory.
Microsoft’s official firmware-reversion instructions are available on its controller firmware reversion support page.
Should you update again?
After rollback, keep the older firmware while you confirm that the original problem is gone. If Microsoft later releases a fix or you need a newer compatibility or security improvement, you can reassess the update through the normal Xbox Accessories process. A rollback is best treated as a supported diagnostic and compatibility step—not proof that every newer firmware release is defective.
