How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 (SM-T830 and SM-T835)

Rooting a Galaxy Tab S4 requires two separate operations: unlocking the tablet’s bootloader and installing a modified boot image. The documented Samsung route is to identify the exact SM-T830 or SM-T835 variant, back up because unlocking and first Magisk installation wipe data, patch that tablet’s complete Samsung AP firmware file in Magisk, and flash the patched package with Odin alongside the matching BL, CP and HOME_CSC files. A TWRP-based setup is possible only where a recovery image matches the tablet; Team Win currently lists support for the Wi-Fi model codename gts4lwifi. Rooting permanently trips Samsung Knox, so this is not a reversible settings change.

What rooting the Galaxy Tab S4 actually involves

“Rooting” is not a single app install. On Samsung tablets, the process changes the verified boot chain so Android can run with administrator-level access. You first unlock the bootloader, which permits unofficial images and erases the user partition. You then either patch the stock Samsung firmware with Magisk or install a compatible custom recovery such as TWRP and use it for further modifications.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The safest documented stock-rooted route is Magisk patching. It keeps the tablet’s normal Samsung firmware structure while replacing the boot-related image with one Magisk has modified. Odin then flashes the patched AP package together with the firmware’s matching components. TWRP is a different path: it adds a custom recovery environment and can support ROM, backup and modification workflows, but compatibility is narrower and dm-verity must be handled correctly.

Both routes have permanent consequences. Magisk’s Samsung instructions state that installing Magisk will trip KNOX. Samsung Knox Attestation is designed to report whether a device has been rooted or is running unofficial firmware, using a signed integrity verdict. Treat the Knox state as hardware-backed and permanent for practical purposes, not as an app setting that can be reset by uninstalling Magisk.

Confirm the exact Tab S4 variant before downloading anything

Never choose a file because it says “Galaxy Tab S4” alone. Samsung released multiple hardware families, and a boot, recovery or firmware archive for the wrong model can leave the tablet unable to start.

Model family Connectivity description Rooting implication
SM-T830 Wi-Fi family Use firmware and images identified specifically for SM-T830. Do not substitute an LTE package.
SM-T835 LTE family Use the exact SM-T835 firmware for your region and binary revision.
TWRP listing Wi-Fi codename gts4lwifi Team Win’s listed Tab S4 recovery is for this Wi-Fi target; it is not evidence that the same image fits SM-T835.

Read the model from Settings or from Download mode and write it down before obtaining a file. Also record the complete software build and bootloader revision. Samsung’s published SM-T835 history documents Android 10 (Q), build T835UBU5CVG4, released on 2022-12-08 with a 2022-06-01 security patch level. That entry is an example of a documented regional build, not a universal package for every T835. Carrier and regional releases can differ, so the binary revision and model must match your tablet.

Decide between Magisk and TWRP before you begin

Consideration Magisk-patched stock firmware TWRP/custom-recovery route
Primary purpose Root the installed Samsung system while retaining stock firmware components. Add a custom recovery for recovery-based modifications and maintenance.
Compatibility Requires the exact model’s AP, BL, CP and CSC firmware set. Requires a recovery archive built for the exact variant; the current Team Win listing identifies gts4lwifi.
Data impact Bootloader unlocking and first Magisk installation require a full wipe. Bootloader unlocking still requires the wipe; additional recovery operations may have their own risks.
Boot protection Magisk’s patched image must be flashed as part of the complete Odin set. Team Win warns that dm-verity can prevent boot when system modifications are made with the stock kernel.
Best fit You want root access with the closest possible stock Samsung experience. You specifically need custom-recovery functions and have a matching image and a plan for dm-verity.

If your goal is simply root access for a particular application or system change, begin with the Magisk route. Choose TWRP only when you understand why you need a custom recovery and have verified that the image is for your model.

Prepare the tablet and computer

Back up data that cannot be recreated

Unlocking the bootloader and the first Magisk installation require a complete data wipe. Copy photos, documents, downloads, authenticator recovery codes, messaging exports and any application data that is not synchronized elsewhere. A backup of the tablet’s internal storage is not enough if the backup itself remains on that storage; copy it to a computer or other independent storage.

Gather the required connection and files

  • A Windows computer with Odin available for the documented Samsung flashing method.
  • A USB-C data cable. It must carry data between the tablet and computer, not merely provide charge.
  • The exact Samsung firmware archive for your model, region and bootloader revision, including its BL, AP, CP and CSC files.
  • Magisk installed on the tablet for patching the AP file.
  • If using TWRP, the proper recovery .tar file for the target variant and the instructions for that image.

Keep an untouched copy of the complete stock firmware package. It is your reference for matching files and your practical recovery resource if a flash fails.

Check the software identity twice

Compare the model and build shown in Android with the labels in the firmware archive. Do not mix an AP from one release with BL, CP or CSC files from another release unless the package’s documentation explicitly supports that combination. A regional or carrier difference is enough to make a seemingly similar archive unsuitable.

Unlock the Samsung bootloader

Unlocking is the gate that allows unofficial images. It is separate from obtaining root and it is the step that first erases the tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Android, open Settings, enable Developer options, and turn on OEM unlocking if the switch is available.
  2. Back up anything still on the tablet. The unlock operation performs a factory-style data wipe.
  3. Power the tablet into Download mode using the device’s hardware-key procedure, then connect it to the computer with the USB-C data cable.
  4. In Download mode, follow the on-screen instruction to long-press Volume Up to unlock the bootloader. Confirm only after checking that your backup is complete.
  5. Allow the tablet to reboot and complete the initial Android setup. Because the storage was wiped, do not start flashing until you can reach the operating system again.
  6. Samsung’s VaultKeeper may defer acceptance of unofficial images. Complete setup, connect the tablet to the internet, return to Developer options and verify that OEM unlocking is still present before proceeding.

If OEM unlocking never appears, do not substitute a firmware file or attempt a random unlock utility. First complete setup and network connection as required by VaultKeeper, then check again. A missing toggle can also indicate that the software state or model is not the one you think it is.

Root stock firmware with Magisk and Odin

This workflow patches the complete AP archive from the exact firmware package. The patched file is not interchangeable with another model or build.

1. Extract and identify the AP file

On the computer, extract the firmware archive and locate the large file whose name begins with AP. Do not rename it in a way that loses its identity, and do not use an AP from a different release. The AP file contains the material Magisk needs to create a patched image.

2. Copy AP to the tablet

Transfer the complete AP file to the tablet’s internal storage. The tablet must be able to read the file locally when Magisk performs the patch; copying only a shortcut or a partially extracted archive will not work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Patch AP in Magisk

  1. Open Magisk and choose the install action that lets you select and patch a file.
  2. Select the copied AP archive.
  3. Let Magisk finish without interrupting the process. It creates a patched tar archive, normally named magisk_patched.tar.
  4. Copy magisk_patched.tar back to the computer. Keep the original AP untouched in case you need to repeat the operation.

4. Load every required Odin slot

Open Odin and place the files from the same firmware release in their matching slots:

Odin slot File to select Reason
BL The release’s BL file Bootloader components matching the firmware revision.
AP magisk_patched.tar The AP archive modified by Magisk.
CP The release’s CP file Modem components for the same package and model.
CSC HOME_CSC The HOME_CSC file specified by the documented Magisk workflow.

Magisk specifically warns not to flash only the patched AP. Odin can shrink the data filesystem when the complete set is not supplied. The patched AP belongs with the matching BL, CP and HOME_CSC files from the firmware package you identified earlier.

5. Enter Download mode and flash

  1. Boot the tablet into Download mode and connect it to the computer with the data cable.
  2. Confirm Odin detects the tablet before starting.
  3. Recheck the model, firmware revision and each slot. A successful connection does not prove that the files are correct.
  4. Start the flash and do not disconnect the cable while Odin is working.
  5. After the tablet reboots, give Android time to complete its first start. The data wipe means your previous apps and files will not be present unless restored from backup.

If Odin refuses a file, stops before writing, or reports a failure, stop rather than repeatedly retrying with different archives. Recheck that the files are genuine Samsung tar files, all belong to the same release, and target the exact SM-T830 or SM-T835 and bootloader revision.

Install TWRP only when the image and boot behavior match

Team Win’s current Tab S4 listing identifies the Wi-Fi codename gts4lwifi. That listing does not make the recovery suitable for SM-T835 or for another Samsung model. Use the proper recovery .tar, a computer running Odin, Download mode and a USB cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify that the recovery archive explicitly names your variant. If it names only gts4lwifi, treat it as a Wi-Fi-targeted file.
  2. Unlock the bootloader and accept the required wipe before attempting to install the recovery.
  3. Enter Download mode, connect the tablet, and load the recovery tar in Odin according to the recovery’s instructions.
  4. Flash only after checking that the file is for the correct model.
  5. Boot directly into recovery after flashing when the image’s instructions require it. Otherwise stock firmware may replace the custom recovery during the next normal boot.

Understand dm-verity before modifying system partitions

Team Win warns: “This device uses dm-verity!” Verified boot can detect that system content no longer matches the expected state. Its documentation warns that allowing system modifications with the stock kernel can stop the tablet booting; bypassing that prevention requires a compatible kernel with dm-verity disabled in its fstab, or an image approach that properly handles dm-verity.

Do not assume that every TWRP build, kernel or root package is interchangeable. A recovery can appear to flash successfully and still fail on the first modified boot if its kernel and verification settings do not match the tablet’s firmware.

Verify the installation and keep a recovery plan

Once Android starts, open Magisk and check its installation state. The application should report the installed components rather than presenting an incomplete or pending setup. If you used TWRP, confirm that recovery still starts after a normal reboot and that you installed the image intended for your model.

Troubleshoot by symptom

OEM unlocking is missing

Complete the initial setup after the wipe, connect to the internet, and check Developer options again. VaultKeeper can require this sequence before unofficial images are accepted. If the switch still does not appear, verify the model and software region instead of flashing a different package.

Odin rejects the patched tar

Confirm that Magisk patched the complete AP archive and that the resulting file is a tar file, not an archive that was extracted again. Recopy the file from the tablet if the transfer was interrupted. Check that BL, CP and HOME_CSC come from the same firmware release and that the release matches the tablet’s model and binary.

The tablet boot-loops after a TWRP or system change

dm-verity is the first compatibility question. The stock kernel can block boot after system modifications, so a recovery or kernel that does not address verification may be unsuitable. Return to Download mode and use the exact stock package kept for recovery, or follow the matching recovery documentation for a compatible dm-verity-disabled kernel.

The tablet starts but root is not available

Open Magisk and inspect its installation state. If the app indicates that installation did not complete, repeat the process with the AP from the currently installed build rather than an older or regional file. Do not flash only AP as a shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enterprise or security functions stop accepting the tablet

This is expected for services that rely on Knox integrity. Samsung Knox Attestation can detect rooted or unofficial firmware and return a signed verdict to an enterprise server. Uninstalling Magisk does not restore the hardware-backed Knox state.

What you give up when you root

  • Data: bootloader unlocking and the first Magisk installation require a full wipe, so a backup is mandatory.
  • Compatibility: every flash must match the exact model, region and bootloader revision.
  • Boot reliability: dm-verity and mismatched recovery or kernel components can produce a boot failure.
  • Knox trust: installing Magisk trips KNOX, and attestation can identify unofficial firmware.
  • Maintenance: future firmware changes require repeating the model-specific checks and, when necessary, repatching the new AP file.

Rooting is therefore most appropriate when you need administrator access or custom-recovery functions badly enough to accept the wipe, troubleshooting work and permanent Knox consequence. If retaining Knox-dependent enterprise behavior is more important than root, leave the bootloader locked and use the tablet unmodified.

Final pre-flash checklist

  1. The tablet’s model is recorded as SM-T830 or SM-T835, not inferred from its appearance.
  2. The firmware archive matches that model, region and bootloader revision.
  3. Photos, documents, authenticator data and app-specific data are backed up off-device.
  4. A working USB-C data cable and Odin computer are ready.
  5. OEM unlocking has been enabled, and VaultKeeper has been allowed to recognize the unlocked state.
  6. For Magisk, the complete AP has been patched and the matching BL, CP and HOME_CSC files are ready.
  7. For TWRP, the recovery tar explicitly matches the tablet; gts4lwifi support is not a license to flash an LTE model.
  8. You understand that KNOX will be tripped and that dm-verity may require a compatible kernel or image approach.
  9. The untouched stock firmware package is stored somewhere accessible if recovery is needed.
