For a local OBS stream, add your clips to a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS also offers Shuffle Playlist, but its documentation does not promise that it reshuffles on every pass or prevents the last clip in one pass from playing first in the next. If you need that guarantee, use a playlist controller with an explicit no-repeat rule and test a full loop boundary before leaving the broadcast unattended.
What “without repeating” needs to mean
These are different shuffle requirements, so choose the one your channel actually needs:
- No immediate repeat: the first clip after a playlist pass must differ from the final clip of the previous pass.
- No repeats within a pass: every clip plays once before any clip returns. This is commonly called a bag shuffle.
- A new order each pass: the playlist is randomized again after each pass. A new order alone does not guarantee that the boundary clips differ.
OBS documents shuffling as randomizing the files, but does not specify which of these guarantees it provides. A forum discussion reports that a shuffled order may persist unchanged into subsequent loops; treat that as a reported behavior, not a permanent guarantee for every OBS version (OBS forum discussion).
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
1. Prepare clips you can broadcast
Put the local video files you have the necessary rights to broadcast in one playlist. Keep them accessible to the computer running OBS. This workflow controls the media sent by your encoder; it does not establish permission to rebroadcast someone else’s material.

2. Add a VLC Video source
- In OBS, select the scene where the playlist should appear.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Populate the source’s playlist with multiple video files.
The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media sources documentation for the source’s playlist and visibility options.
3. Choose loop and shuffle separately
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the list after its final item.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist if a randomized order is useful, but do not rely on that setting alone for a fresh shuffle on every pass or a no-repeat boundary.
Looping controls whether the list starts again; shuffling affects the order. Neither setting, as documented, specifies an explicit rule excluding the previous pass’s final item from the next pass’s first position.

4. Check behavior when the source is hidden
OBS lets you set how a VLC source behaves when hidden: it can stop, pause, or keep playing, depending on the visibility behavior setting. If your scenes switch during the broadcast, select the behavior you intend and verify that hiding and showing the source does not create an unwanted stop or restart.
5. Test the pass boundary
Watch a complete playlist pass and the transition into the next one in a private test or recording. Confirm the actual sequence and the source’s behavior through your scene changes before leaving it unattended. A loop setting governs media order; it is not evidence of continuous stream availability or automatic recovery.

How to get a stronger no-repeat shuffle
If you require every item to play once before any returns, look for a controller that explicitly implements a bag shuffle. The Playlist Deck project describes its Shuffle mode as: “Bag shuffle: every item plays once, in random order, before any repeats.” That is the project’s feature claim; check compatibility with your OBS version and scene, then test the full pass and boundary yourself (Playlist Deck project).
If only an immediate repeat is forbidden, the controller must also compare the previous pass’s final item with the next pass’s first and choose a different first item when they match. A newly randomized sequence is not sufficient on its own. The cited OBS controls do not document this boundary check, so do not assume they provide it.

Why YouTube’s Loop button does not do this
YouTube’s player Loop control repeats a video or playlist for an individual viewer. It does not change the feed OBS sends to a live broadcast (YouTube Help: loop videos or playlists). Playlist rotation belongs in the encoder or playout setup producing that feed.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the stream resource that transmits audio and video from the broadcast resource representing the event. That distinction is another reason not to confuse a viewer’s playback control with the outgoing live program (YouTube Live Streaming API documentation).

Troubleshoot a clip that keeps repeating
- Only one clip plays: confirm the source is VLC Video with multiple playlist entries, not a single-file Media Source set to loop.
- The list stops after its last clip: check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The same order returns: OBS documentation does not promise a new shuffle each pass, and users have reported unchanged shuffled sequences. Test your installed OBS/VLC setup at the boundary rather than assuming it reshuffles.
- A clip stops or restarts after a scene change: inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test the scene transition.
- The live broadcast drops: playlist looping does not itself provide stream recovery. The cited playlist documentation establishes media controls, not uninterrupted broadcast availability.
