To change a 24/7 playlist at sunrise, keep one live feed running and put the date-and-location schedule in the encoder or playout system that controls its content.
The essential choices are which Indian location defines “sunrise,” how that location’s date-specific sunrise time is converted to the scheduler’s timezone, and what content should play after the trigger. There is no single sunrise time for all of India.
Decide what “regional sunrise” means for your stream
Before building the schedule, decide whether one stream changes according to a single reference location or whether different streams serve different regions. A single stream needs a clear rule—for example, use one selected city’s sunrise as the switch trigger. Separate regional streams can each use their own coordinates and schedule.
Sunrise depends on both location and date. Choose coordinates for each schedule rather than treating a city’s time as representative of every region. If the transition should occur before or after calculated sunrise, specify that offset as an editorial choice; there is no universally correct technical buffer.

Understand the three parts of a YouTube 24/7 playlist
- Broadcast: The watchable YouTube live event, with its title, privacy status and scheduled start time.
- Stream feed: The continuous audio/video connection sent to YouTube by an encoder or playout system.
- Playout automation: The system that chooses which prerecorded video or playlist segment is present in that feed, and when it changes.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a live broadcast from a live stream. Scheduling the broadcast does not itself schedule a content change in the feed. Keep the stream feed active while the playout layer makes the sunrise transition.
Build the sunrise schedule
1. Get a sunrise time for each location and date
The India Meteorological Department documents a “Sun Moon (Rise/Set) Time” API endpoint that accepts latitude and longitude. Its example for Jaipur identifies the returned time as IST. Check current API access requirements and response fields before relying on it in a production schedule: India Meteorological Department API reference.
Another option is Sunrise-Sunset.org API v2, which documents coordinate-based requests, local-time output by default, and date ranges of up to 366 days. Its terms require visible attribution when its data is used. Its changelog reports a calculation correction on September 14, 2026, so confirm current behavior and terms before implementation: Sunrise-Sunset.org API v2.

For an independent calculation, NOAA publishes a solar calculation method using a 90.833° zenith convention, which approximates atmospheric refraction and the solar disk. NOAA states theoretical accuracy of about one minute for latitudes between 72° north and 72° south, and within ten minutes outside that range; actual observed sunrise can vary with atmospheric conditions. These are calculation qualifications, not a guarantee of the observed moment at an Indian location. See NOAA’s calculation details.

2. Preserve the location, date and timezone
Store each calculated event with the location and local date used to obtain it, plus an explicit timezone or normalized UTC instant. Do not assume that every API returns UTC: IMD’s cited example reports IST, while Sunrise-Sunset.org v2 defaults to the location’s local time. Check the scheduler’s timezone setting and convert deliberately before saving the trigger.

3. Schedule the content change in the playout layer
Configure the encoder or playout system to change the video or playlist at the calculated trigger while keeping the outgoing feed alive. The exact controls vary by system; the reviewed YouTube materials do not prescribe a particular encoder or define a YouTube Studio control for sunrise-based playlist switching.
If using an API to schedule the YouTube event, the Live Streaming API reference documents ISO 8601 timestamps for scheduledStartTime, along with auto-start and auto-stop settings. A local encoder or a cloud playout service can provide the feed; the right choice depends on which system can reliably run your schedule and keep the stream connected.

- Prepare a controlled broadcast. Schedule a private or otherwise controlled YouTube live event and bind it to the stream feed. YouTube’s API guide describes creating a broadcast with a title, scheduled start time and privacy status, then binding it to a stream: YouTube broadcast implementation guide.
- Check the sunrise input. Confirm the coordinates, local date, returned timezone and source value for the test location.
- Check the conversion. Compare the stored event time with the scheduler’s timezone and confirm the intended local trigger time.
- Observe the transition. Verify that the playout system switches to the intended content while the feed remains connected.
- Check status and recovery. Confirm broadcast and stream status through the transition, and test your manual correction path if data is late or unavailable.
- Repeat across dates and locations. A test for one city and date does not validate other regional schedules or future dates.
YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guide describes testing and status transitions: YouTube broadcast lifecycle. Keep a simple log of the source sunrise time, converted trigger and observed switch result; this helps distinguish a data error from a timezone or playout problem.
Troubleshoot a missed or mistimed switch
- The change happens at the wrong local time: Check whether the sunrise source returned IST, another local timezone or UTC, and verify the scheduler’s timezone and date. Recalculate the conversion rather than adjusting the trigger by guesswork.
- The right time is saved for the wrong day or place: Confirm the coordinates and local date associated with the event. Sunrise is location- and date-specific.
- The broadcast is live, but the video does not change: The broadcast and stream feed may be operating while the playout rule is absent, misconfigured or unsupported. Check the scheduler’s trigger and playlist controls.
- The feed stops around the transition: Check encoder or playout status, network or provider logs, and whether the content change interrupts the outgoing feed. Test the transition under controlled conditions.
- Sunrise data is missing or late: Use the documented manual correction path, check the data provider’s current response, and record the value used. Do not silently treat a calculated time as a guaranteed observed instant.
