How to Rotate a YouTube Livestream Playlist Without Restarting OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play and rotate multiple videos in a playlist while your YouTube livestream stays connected. Add the files, choose their order, and enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to repeat. Changing the media source changes what OBS sends; it does not, by itself, require ending the YouTube stream.

Set up an OBS playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC Media Player. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. Match the installation to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The official OBS source guide, dated January 11, 2022, documents this requirement and the source settings: OBS media sources.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, open the scene where the videos should appear, use the Sources panel’s add button, and choose VLC Video. Add the video files in the source’s playlist properties and arrange them in the order you want. Exact labels may differ in your installed OBS version.
  3. Choose how the list advances. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; turn it on for randomized ordering. Enable Loop Playlist to start the list again after its final item. If you want one pass only, leave looping off.
  4. Set playback behavior when hidden. Choose the VLC source’s visibility behavior according to how you use scenes. OBS documents options to stop and restart playback when hidden and visible, pause and unpause, or always play. To keep the playlist progressing while you switch to another scene, choose the behavior that keeps playback active while hidden. Test it in your installed version.
  5. Start or keep the YouTube stream running. In YouTube’s live control room, use the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings and preview the incoming feed as usual. YouTube’s encoder setup describes sending content from the encoder; changing which source OBS displays is a production change, not an instruction to end that encoder connection. This is an operational inference from the OBS and YouTube workflows, not a guarantee that every scene change will be gap-free. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose the right OBS source

Source Best for Repeat and ordering When hidden
VLC Video A playlist of multiple video files Can loop the playlist or shuffle its items Can stop and restart, pause and unpause, or keep playing, depending on the selected behavior
Media Source A single video file Has a Loop setting to replay that file; it is not the multi-file playlist source Choose its source behavior to suit the scene; consult the installed OBS controls

For automatic rotation through several files, use VLC Video. If you only need to replay one clip, Media Source is simpler. OBS’s source guide covers both: OBS media sources.

Automatic rotation and manual selection are different

A VLC playlist advances automatically. Looping repeats the queue, while shuffle changes its order. If by “rotate” you mean jumping to a particular item or switching among different playlists on demand, the VLC source implementation has next and previous controls, but their exact presentation and assignment can vary by OBS version. A controller or macro keypad is optional; it is not required for automatic playlist playback.

Keep the stream live while changing content

Leave OBS streaming and change the visible source or scene instead of choosing a YouTube action that ends the stream. YouTube describes ending a broadcast by stopping the encoder from sending content. Starting or ending the stream is separate from changing the media OBS is composing. Preview the result after a change; the available documentation does not guarantee frame-accurate, interruption-free transitions for every setup.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not confuse a playlist with YouTube Live Redirect

YouTube Live Redirect hands viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current stream ends. It does not rotate videos inside an OBS stream that is still running. YouTube lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes as eligibility requirements for channels sending redirects.

Check the video files and first-time setup

  • Test your actual files. The cited OBS material does not give a complete codec compatibility matrix for every operating system. Add the intended files and verify playback in the scene before relying on the playlist.
  • Allow for first-time livestream activation. YouTube’s first-time encoder guidance says enabling livestreaming can take up to 24 hours. If streaming is not yet enabled, complete that setup before planning a live playlist: YouTube’s livestreaming setup guidance.
  • Check the right control. If one video repeats, you may have added a Media Source rather than VLC Video. If the list stops on the final item, check Loop Playlist. If order varies unexpectedly, turn off Shuffle Playlist.
  • Check visibility behavior. If playback pauses or resets after switching scenes, review the VLC source’s behavior when hidden and select the setting that suits your intended playback.
  • Check VLC architecture. If VLC Video is unavailable or fails to load, confirm that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • Check YouTube’s incoming feed. If viewers do not see the changed content, confirm OBS is still streaming and preview the incoming feed in YouTube’s live control room. Do not end the stream merely to switch playlist items.
