For moving backgrounds, use a looping Media Source for one video or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. Put the background below text and other overlays in the Sources list, then test the complete scene before going live.
Choose the right OBS source
| Source | Use it for | Rotation and looping | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image Slide Show | A sequence of still images | Automatic slide changes; configurable interval and transition; Loop and Randomize Playback options | The direct built-in choice for still backgrounds. OBS Image Sources documentation |
| Media Source | One moving background video | Enable its Loop property to repeat the file | Use it for a single file rather than a multi-clip playlist. OBS Media Sources documentation |
| VLC Video Source | A playlist of video clips | Loop Playlist repeats the playlist; shuffle is also available | Requires VLC installed. OBS’s documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation |
For a calm, planned visual sequence, use stills in a fixed order and leave Randomize Playback off. Enable random playback only if you want the order to vary. OBS documents the source controls, not a universally best interval or a schedule proven to improve meditation or sleep.
Set up a rotating slideshow of still images
- Add the source: In the scene you use for the stream, select the plus button under Sources, choose Image Slide Show, and add the image files or a directory. OBS documents BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG/JPG, and GIF formats for image sources. See OBS’s Image Sources guide.
- Make it automatic: Set Slide Mode to Automatic so the images advance without manual scene switching.
- Set the visual cadence: Choose a transition, such as Fade, then set Time Between Slides and Transition Speed separately. The interval is how long an image displays before the next transition begins; transition speed is how long the animation takes. OBS lists defaults of 8,000 ms between slides and 700 ms for transition speed. These are software defaults, not recommended meditation timings; adjust them to your intended pace and check the preview.
- Keep the sequence running: Leave Loop enabled to restart at the first image after the last. Randomize Playback is optional. Check Visibility Behaviour if the source may be hidden in some scenes; its setting determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while hidden.
- Fit the image area: In the preview, position and size the source to cover the canvas. OBS provides Fit to Screen and Edit Transform options. Check for letterboxing, unwanted cropping, and whether the composition leaves enough contrast behind any text. OBS’s Sources Guide explains layering and transforms.
Use a looping video or video playlist
Repeat one video file
Add a Media Source and select the video file. Enable its Loop property to repeat that file. Review the preview to confirm the start and end of the clip transition as intended; a loop setting repeats playback but does not smooth over a visible or audible discontinuity in the file.
Rotate several video clips
Add a VLC Video Source, create or select a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist to repeat it. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, but verify the setting in your installed version. VLC must be installed for this source to be available; match its architecture to OBS (the OBS documentation specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS). Check the OBS Media Sources guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep titles and other overlays visible
OBS renders sources higher in the Sources list above sources lower in the list. Put the slideshow or video background below text, logos, and other elements so those overlays remain visible. Reorder sources in the list if the background covers them, then use the preview or Edit Transform to refine their size and position. OBS Sources Guide
Test the scene and stream path before relying on it
Run a short recording or test stream and watch long enough to see several image changes or at least one full video loop. Confirm that overlays remain visible, the background fills the canvas, and playback behaves correctly when you switch scenes or change source visibility. OBS recommends a short test before a first stream; source settings alone cannot guarantee a continuous broadcast because the computer, network, and full streaming path also matter. Keep the test representative of the setup you intend to use. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps, and its configuration guidance takes hardware and network conditions into account. If the system struggles, simplify the scene or reduce output demands before the live session rather than assuming a looping source will fix performance problems. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Troubleshoot common visual problems
- Images do not advance: Confirm Slide Mode is Automatic and the source is visible. Check Visibility Behaviour if it has been hidden; the selected behavior can pause or stop playback.
- The order changes unexpectedly: Turn off Randomize Playback for a fixed sequence.
- The last image does not return to the first: Enable Loop in Image Slide Show, or Loop for a single Media Source file.
- A playlist does not repeat: Verify Loop Playlist on the VLC Video Source and confirm VLC is installed with architecture compatible with OBS.
- The background hides titles: Move it below the overlays in the Sources list; higher sources render above lower ones.
- The background has bars or is cropped: Adjust its transform and fit in the preview, then check the canvas edges and overlay placement. The right fit depends on the image or clip’s aspect ratio and the stream canvas.
- The stream is unstable despite looping: A source loop only controls media playback; it does not keep the computer, network, or YouTube connection running. Test the whole stream path and review OBS’s hardware and network guidance.
Check rights to the background material
OBS’s source documentation explains playback controls, not permissions. Confirm that you have the appropriate rights to stream each image, video, and any included audio; the fact that a file can be added or looped in OBS does not grant streaming rights.

StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it plays uploads as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
