To stream Dota 2 match replays on YouTube, use a Dota 2 replay or DotaTV view as the video source, capture it with an encoder such as OBS, and send that encoder’s output to a YouTube Live event. For a continuous stream, the computer running the game and encoder must stay on, and someone needs to monitor interruptions. Valve’s rules for tournament community streams and YouTube’s copyright checks also apply. The official guidance reviewed does not document current Dota 2 client steps for finding, downloading, or looping replays, so verify those controls in your client rather than relying on an assumed menu path.
What you need for a continuous replay stream
- A permitted replay source. For tournament content, check Valve’s Dota 2 Community Stream Policy and the event operator’s requirements before streaming. A replay being viewable in Dota 2 does not by itself establish that every associated broadcast element may be reused.
- A computer that can run both Dota 2 and an encoder. Steam’s listed minimum requirements are for the game, not a guarantee that the same computer can play a replay and encode a stable stream at once. Test the actual setup.
- An encoder and a YouTube Live event. YouTube describes sending gameplay through software or hardware encoder settings using the stream URL and key. OBS is one free, open-source option listed by YouTube.
- A plan for the replay ending or the stream failing. A live game-client view is not the same as a pre-recorded file that a playout service can loop. You need to know what the client does when a replay ends and how you will restore the stream if the encoder, computer, or connection stops.
There is no single confirmed Dota 2 client procedure here for locating or downloading a replay, no established replay-retention period, and no documented replay-loop control. Check the current client and its available replay controls on your platform; do not assume a particular menu path, file location, or automatic loop. If you use a recording instead of a live replay view, first make sure the recording and all its content are cleared for your use.
Check tournament and copyright permissions first
Valve’s community-stream rules
Valve’s Dota 2 Community Stream Policy says a community stream must be based exclusively on DotaTV and content you created or licensed. It also says operator camera work and broadcast audio require the operator’s authorization, and streamers must follow event-specific requirements. If the operator has not published requirements, Valve says the community stream must still be non-commercial. Valve suggests contacting the operator at least two weeks ahead when requirements are unclear; that is guidance, not a universal deadline.
Valve’s general video policy says creators may monetize Valve game videos through the YouTube Partner Program and similar programs. That general permission does not override the Dota community-stream rules, an event’s requirements, or third-party rights. Do not assume monetization is allowed for a particular tournament stream.

YouTube’s live copyright checks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another copyrighted broadcast. If it detects material, it may show a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate the stream, and may apply Content ID claims to an archived stream afterward. If you have a license to use third-party content, YouTube says the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Permission and allowlisting are separate issues; resolve both before going live.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Confirm your channel can go live. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until stream day.
- Create or schedule a Live event in YouTube Studio. Choose the event details and audience settings appropriate to your channel and content. Keep the event unlisted while testing if you do not want the test to be publicly discoverable.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. Depending on the encoder, connect through its YouTube option or enter the server URL and stream key in its streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it on-screen, or share it with an untrusted person. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
- Build a scene that captures the Dota 2 replay view. In OBS or another encoder, select the game or display capture that shows the replay, then check that the intended game view—not a desktop, menu, or unrelated window—is in the preview. Add commentary or graphics only if the content and event rules permit them.
- Choose output settings you can sustain. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval affect stream quality and stability, but the official material reviewed here does not supply numeric Dota-specific values. Do not treat Dota 2’s minimum PC requirements as encoder settings or as proof of encoding capacity. Use the encoder’s current YouTube-oriented recommendations, check the live preview for warnings, and test with the same game, scene, and network conditions you expect to use.
- Start the encoder before the event. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least 2 hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Wait for the YouTube preview, inspect picture and sound, and only then start the Live event in Studio.
- Check the viewer experience. Open the watch page from another browser or device and check playback on mobile as well as the encoder preview. YouTube recommends checking access, audio/video, archive files, and any backup-encoder failover. Do a full test of the handoff before relying on a backup.
Keep a Dota 2 replay stream running
For a live replay view in the Dota 2 client
Keep the Dota 2 client, encoder, and network connection running on the computer supplying the replay view. Confirm what happens at the end of that replay in your current client: the official guidance does not establish a supported automatic replay loop or a particular way to advance to another match. If the replay ends, the game view changes, or the client closes, the encoder may continue sending a menu or blank scene rather than useful replay footage. Assign someone to watch for that and restore the intended view.

For a permitted recording
A recording can be used as an encoder source only if you have the rights to stream it and the encoder or playback setup actually supports the repeat or playlist behavior you need. Confirm the repeat behavior in a private test, including what appears between clips and whether audio continues. Do not assume that a cloud service which loops uploaded video can run the Dota 2 client or reproduce a DotaTV replay session.
Plan around stream and archive limits
YouTube recommends continued monitoring; an always-on broadcast is not a set-and-forget guarantee. Arrange an operator or a tested recovery plan for an encoder crash, network loss, replay ending, YouTube warning, or copyright interruption. YouTube’s guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a 24-hour broadcast will be archived, so do not rely on the live stream as your only recording or promise that a full-day archive will be available.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the encoder connection | The channel may not be enabled for live streaming, the URL or key may be wrong, or live access may be restricted. | Check channel verification and live eligibility, then copy the current event’s URL and key from YouTube Studio into the encoder. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live activation. |
| The event preview is blank or shows the wrong screen | The encoder capture source may not be targeting the Dota 2 replay view. | Inspect the scene and source in the encoder, bring the intended client view forward, and confirm the corrected picture in YouTube’s preview before going live. |
| Picture or audio is unstable | The computer may be unable to run Dota 2 and encode reliably at the chosen output, or the connection may be unstable. | Test the full setup under expected conditions. Reduce output demands if needed, follow current YouTube encoder guidance, and recheck preview and playback from another device. |
| The stream changes to a menu or stops showing a match | The replay may have ended, the client may have changed screens, or the game may have closed. | Check the client’s current replay controls and have an operator restore a permitted replay view. Do not depend on an undocumented loop feature. |
| YouTube shows a copyright warning, placeholder, or interruption | The stream may contain third-party broadcast audio, camera work, or other claimed material; a license may not be reflected in Content ID. | Stop or remove the disputed content while you verify rights. Follow the event operator’s requirements and, for licensed material, ask the rights owner about channel allowlisting. |
| The stream ends but no full-day archive appears | YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed 24-hour archive. | Use a separate recording or archive plan if you need a copy, and check the current YouTube rules before depending on longer broadcasts being archived. |
Costs and operating trade-offs
The do-it-yourself game-client approach requires a computer capable of running Dota 2 and an encoder together, a reliable connection, and a person or recovery process to respond when the replay or stream stops. A dedicated hardware encoder is an option, not a requirement; YouTube also lists software encoding such as OBS. YouTube’s documentation also mentions cloud services for pre-recorded 24/7 streams, but a playout service does not itself establish that replay footage is rights-cleared or run the Dota 2 client.

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video live; it does not run Dota 2 or go live from a camera. It fits a permitted replay recording that you can upload, not a live DotaTV/game-client view that needs the game to run. Upload the cleared video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops it in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
