To rotate shop promo videos on YouTube Live, play the video files in sequence through an encoder or playout system and send that output to a YouTube Live event. A regular YouTube playlist is for viewers; its playlist URL does not create a live broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live: it must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The person starting the stream must be at least 16. See YouTube Help’s live-streaming requirements.
- The promo video files arranged in the order you want them played, plus an encoder or playout tool that can send their output as a live feed. YouTube describes encoders as tools for streaming gameplay, overlays, and hardware sources; it does not document a native setting that turns a watch playlist into a live feed.
- Permission to broadcast every video and audio element in the intended territory and use, including music, voiceovers, and third-party material. Check rights for both the live broadcast and any replay you intend to keep.
- A stable, powered computer and network if you run the encoder locally. The stream depends on those resources remaining available.
Set up and start the promo stream
1. Prepare the video sequence
Load the promo files into an encoder or playout system in the desired order. Configure that tool to play the sequence continuously if you want the promos to repeat. The exact playlist controls depend on the tool you choose; YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the connection to Live, not a specific retail-video playlist feature.
2. Create the YouTube Live event
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the title, description, and privacy, then save. Interface labels may vary as Studio changes; Google’s Full Live Production Guide describes the general production flow.
3. Connect the encoder
Copy the stream key for the matching event from Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended promo sequence, then start its output.

4. Check the incoming preview and go live
Wait for the event’s incoming preview. Check that the video is visible, the audio is correct, and the sequence is playing as intended. Only then select Go Live in Live Control Room. Monitor the stream and encoder while the promos run.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder warning and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. A licence alone may not prevent this platform interruption: YouTube says the rights owner should add the channel to its Content ID allowlist when the channel is authorised to use the material. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

For a shop in India, confirm that permissions cover the specific videos, music, voiceovers, and other included material for the intended territory and broadcast use. YouTube’s platform guidance is not a complete statement of Indian copyright law.
Keep the stream running when the shop is unattended
A local setup relies on the shop’s computer, source files, power, and internet connection. If any of those fail, the encoder may stop sending the feed. Decide who will check the stream and restart the encoder after a failure, and keep the stream key and recovery steps accessible only to authorised staff.

Troubleshooting
The promo playlist is not appearing as a live broadcast
A regular YouTube playlist is a viewer playback list, not a live input. Send the files through an encoder or playout tool, then connect that output to the YouTube event using its stream key.
Live Control Room is not receiving a preview
Check that the encoder is running, that it is configured for the intended event, and that you entered the matching stream key. If you change the key, update it in the encoder and restart its output.

The stream is interrupted or replaced by a warning
Check for third-party video or audio matches. Confirm that your permission covers live use and ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID where applicable.
The broadcast stops when nobody is at the shop
Check whether the computer lost power, the encoder closed, the source files became unavailable, or the network dropped. Restore the failed component, restart the encoder, and confirm the incoming preview before resuming.
When HLS settings matter
Most shop operators do not need to configure YouTube’s HLS ingestion protocol; use the ordinary encoder workflow unless your encoder or playout vendor specifically requires HLS. Google’s HLS ingestion guide describes vendor-level requirements: muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, HTTPS, and correctly sequenced playlists and segments. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC and intended for high-quality, high-resolution ingestion. Do not confuse an HLS media playlist with a normal YouTube viewing playlist.
